It did not reduce anything for me. The prejudices were still there, played out & understood Because she lied about it. She was so enraged , disappointed with her father that she made a point of it. It didnt take anything away for me other than not being faithful to the book which I didn't read anyway. So in that respect nothing was changed for me. It was written even up to the point of consummation of marriage does she then reveal the truth to her husband. Which makes Dajiao's character all the more admirable. His love and respect for her were pure & unconditional. Whether he was a cripple in the book didnt make a difference, they stayed true to the hard life they lived, he wasnt embellished , he still look shabby & rough in the edges. Sure r*pe would be uncomfortable to see there is no doubt but the elements were not reduced by her lying. I dont know why the decision was made or the intention of the writers to deviate but they did good as far as the elements were concern we still saw their prejudices, we still saw how it was back then. As for not being happy that they were not faithful to the book, of course that is another thing all together.

Love that Xiuxiu lied about being r&ped by the bandits because that's what would have happened to her had Dajiao not come to her rescue on his own accord. Historically daughters were traded like cattle, married off like a piece of commodity. Its also clear that virginity , reputation even through kidnapping and ra*e are still seen as a women's only commodity for men in those times. She is considered worthless even if just a rumor. Also It's the hard truth that back then wealthy fathers in those times saw land as more important than their daughter's life. Xiuxiu got to see the true colors of her dad, her mum , her fiancé, her fiancé sister and her now husband. And because of that she was saved from a toxic family and a toxic fiancé & his family. Her life would have been ruined for the rest of her life had she not lied about it and anyway who would have believed her? It was clear if she did not make it back midnight it meant she would be tarnished with being violated whether she was or not, its how it was back then. Her Dad should be made to feel guilty, although he still has not learned, he will get his comeuppance, his greed , his years of abuse to his tenants, his defrauding, stealing, cheating the working poor will get his just punishment. This show also clearly shows the reality of the oppression from the greedy robber barons. It befits the times we live in , a very good reminder how laws came to be, how they were fought, how without them people were oppressed and how we can lose these human rights if we forget history.

ep 24 I'm really fed up with Xiao Hui. I dont understand how President Ziao is the villian and not Xie. What twisted morality does she have? And how can think Shen Jing treat her well when she is used as a spy. How dangerous and crazy is she to judge President Ziao as dirty when she is dirty! And Zhou Lin ...I dont understand and her moral compass... I guess its only self interest she would sell herself for anything just so she can get what she wants? Why is this writer writing all the women's character so flawed except Rui and maybe Tao's sister. Other than these gripes im fully on board this drama.

ep 5. This drama is filled with misunderstanding after misunderstanding for misunderstanding sake. Its painful to watch and getting far too annoying at this point.
