it’s colourism not racism. they’re all asian (or mixed asian). there’s no racial discrimination. there is…
I disagree. It is still discrimination based on race. Being half white means you are half European and being half black means you are half African. European and African are considered different races. If it was Asians discriminating against other Asians, it would be strictly colorism.
People like to argue Thai people are already mixed but in reality its just a mix of different asian tribes in the Indochina area. Two asian mixes does not mean they should be considered Bi-Racial. These asian tribes all share a common ancestor. Someone that is half khmer half viet is basically the same as someone that is half german and half british.
idk about light skin thais being a minority (unless they have a milky skin tone closer to pink like some half whites, which then i will agree cause i only know one non-bi-racial thai that fits that description) but i do see a fair amount of yellow and caramel skin tones in my personal community (where people are not burning in the sun). Its not as deeply pale as korea but not "dark". i'm considered light skin even though i'm basically a medium yellow so i guess this is a matter of different perspectives. I'm just not seeing the logic with inserting someone that does not look half arabic at all into a role like this. Its clear something is going on.
I think that's a pretty unfair statement to make, to call someone racist based on this one fact. Keeping in mind…
You say "they're aren't many half arabic thai to begin with" to justify no representation yet half europeans are one of the smallest minorities in the country and they are given DOZENS of lead roles. Where is your excuse for that hmmmm??? They don't give regular tan skin thai girls as many lead roles and there are way more of them than half european women here in the country.
You're being blind and daft on purpose because you support the racist agenda New is trying to spread. There are plenty of thai people who would better look the part obviously. This guy looks chinese. They should have hired someone with more Khmer/Lao features and slightly browner skin tone. This was a total miss match and it was done on purpose because we all know New prefers whitewashing the entire Thai population on his TV shows. Case in point, half the supporting cast in Love By Chance was half european which does not make sense because that does not accurately reflect what the country looks like. And not only that but we were expected to think they were "fully thai" too. He'd prefer to erase tan skin thai girls from existence and hire Sammy all the time lol. Colorism is not cute. Notice how he never gives the same chance to half black thais too. Clearly that is proof in itself!
Director New is literally one of the most racist directors out there. The main role called for a dark skin half arab character and what do we get? A lead that looks no where near that description. He has a clear discrimination towards dark/tan skin.
Please do not support this director. If you want to watch this, watch this on dailymotion so they don't get any money.
So the racist white washed casting standards of this Remake is much better? The new Phana was cast because hes…
Clearly you missed the entire point of my comment but that's okay. I know you people don't want to acknowledge the real reason Ben got hired and its not because of his "acting skills"
So the racist white washed casting standards of this Remake is much better? The new Phana was cast because hes…
You're trying to trivialize people's opinion's about the new cast when they have every right to say what they wanna say. Its a shallow romance drama that just had the entire cast change, of course people are going to be snippy about how the new ones look drastically different. The Phana character has basically just been whitewashed for no reason.
And this is where your ignorance lies. if you add in non-BL, there are many, MANY half white leads (ESPECIALLY WOMEN). Its gotten to a point where they are over-represented in the media
but in the BL world. aside from this show, there is: What the Duck, Cause You're My Boy, Love By Chance, and one upcoming BL starring the half white guy from LBC, etc. This is enough to warrant the eurocentrism criticism. The same treatment has never been afforded to half black thais. Just Saying.
Like I so ''love'' how people here defend the first version with ''beauty''!That is SO unprofessional!Guys, if…
So the racist white washed casting standards of this Remake is much better? The new Phana was cast because hes half white and Thai directors think those with european DNA are more marketable than regular asians. Just being part european automatically makes a person attractive in their minds (also proven as to why two of the supporting cast is also half european)
I still have yet to see a half black Thai person being given a lead acting role IN ANYTHING. Criticism against this new casting is WARRANTED. People are tired of the racist bullcrap agenda Thailand directors are pushing onto people when they give dozens of half whites lead roles (despite not even representing a majority of the population) and ignoring non-white half thais in the same process. They are even relabeled as "full thai" in the dramas. Its ridiculous.
Never in the history of asian countries have i seen a minority be OVER-REPRESENTED. Its like seeing an African majority country making their television media center around non-blacks. It would not make any sense.
Bottom line, eurocentrism got Benjamin the job. If he was half black, he would have never even passed the first round at the audition. FACTS.
only one is half white maybe u got confused because yeah 2 of them lived in europe and in australia but they are…
the reason why Sammy is not getting leads is because she's not on the same body weight/visual as Urassaya, Kim Woltemas, Chompoo Araya, Mai Davika, Jannine Weigel or the other dozens of half white actresses being propped up in thailand.
Trust me when i say that if you search the most followed thai actresses on instagram, the top 5 will be exclusively half white.
but with that said, Sammy is STILL in a good position to be getting supportive roles (and also being put into "full asian" roles) where as half black thais are given ZILCH. they're lucky to even get a chance at doing music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2zcB5sa8ko
the half black thai girl above is the same kind of average looking face as Sammy is (and looks just as different being a half as well) but why isn't she given a supportive role in anything? Its colorism.
Go look at the show Love by Chance. Its another case where 3 of the supportive cast members were half european. I'd be fine with it if it were ACTUALLY ABOUT DIVERSITY AND "ACTING SKILLS" but its not. Its just an erasure of southeast asian representation. European minorities are seen as more favorable to represent Thailand. Tan skin asians make up half the population yet tan skin thai women are erased from existence on tv shows. Its blatant eurocentrism in a country run by asian people.
only one is half white maybe u got confused because yeah 2 of them lived in europe and in australia but they are…
actually 2 female cast members are half white as well as the lead character. Half whites are a small minority yet they are allowed to represent half the cast here (and they get a crap ton of lead roles in many other thai shows). So why aren't other non-white halfs being casted too? Half blacks are minorities too yet are never given the chance to be in lead or supportive roles in any tv show in Thailand. I can't name a single top actor/actress that half black but i can give dozens of half white names.
its fucked up that not even regular thai women were good enough to be casted on this show.
Time and time again Thailand directors have proved that they have racist whitewashed casting standards. Either give ALL HALFS the same chance or don't prop up the idea that having white DNA somehow makes you superior. It doesn't.
The director is going to include a blackface scene in the show and implied dark skin is "scary".
this is coming from a show that hires THREE half white actors and not hiring a single half thai that isn't part european.
Half europeans always have a higher chance of being hired by these colorist white worshipping directors even though half europeans look just as different from us as half africans do, its only because of their pale skin is why they are worshipped and being put into "full thai" roles. How sad. Colorism is alive and well in Thailand!
I'm not supporting the casting of half white leads until all other halfs are given the same chance and the same equal treatment. Otherwise its just eurocentrism and not diversity!
While racism and colorism and all that exists, I really trust that these actors were casted for their talent and…
i would argue that alot of them are complicit. if a system greatly favored/benefited you and gave you fame + fans who would kiss the ground you walk on, would you want to stop such a system? I think not. They all know eurocentrism played a part in their casting. At the end of the day, everyone cares about themselves.
While racism and colorism and all that exists, I really trust that these actors were casted for their talent and…
its not just him though, the two other women in the cast are half white. Thats basically almost half the cast. Not a single woman in the cast is southeast asian.
As i've said many times before, its the women who get discriminated more. While you still may see some tan skin thai men cast in lead roles, the same thing can never be said for tan skin thai women.
I see so many thai women who think of themselves as ugly because they think they can never live up to the standard of being a half white woman. so they go to the extreme and buy many skin brightening products (these same companies also sponsor thai dramas, which is another reason for them to cast more half european leads. It equals more profit for their business to make the average woman feel as if they need to brighten their skin)
And while i do think half whites are not a problem by themselves (i think all bi-racial people, no matter what their mix, deserve representation too). Its the way the industry/media in thailand pushes them and over-represents them (in a country where most people are fully asian), is what i have a problem with.
if you believe that they've gotten through on fair merit, then thats fine. But given half the cast is half european, i have to agree to disagree. Me speaking out about this is to continue to spread awareness. Most people are unaware and awareness is the first step to change.
While racism and colorism and all that exists, I really trust that these actors were casted for their talent and…
So are you saying ethnic Viet, Isan, Lanna, Khmer, Burmese, Malay, and Half black people don't have "talent and potential" to have lead acting roles in Thailand?
so why is it that only one minority (half european) is being given lead roles for everything? They're an over-represented minority in thai media.
Shouldn't the top 6 be Southeast asian as they are the racial majority? but if you were to ever do a top 100 most followed thai celeb, you still won't find a half black thai celeb. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. Its Eurocentrism, not equality or diversity.
Either cast and treat every minority equal or don't try to prop up half whites as superior to everyone else. European DNA does not make a person superior but Thai casting directors seem to think so. Its just plain wrong.
Now im 100% sure he got casted cause hes half european. Chiffon Cake can kiss my ass with her racist casting agenda
People like to argue Thai people are already mixed but in reality its just a mix of different asian tribes in the Indochina area. Two asian mixes does not mean they should be considered Bi-Racial. They could have have casted a burmese/khmer actor and it would have still been a better fit than the lead LOL
You're being blind and daft on purpose because you support the racist agenda New is trying to spread. There are plenty of thai people who would better look the part obviously. This guy looks chinese. Even this native thai man knows how horrible things are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7G0iwpyNe0
Every time they do this, i have to keep continuing to speak out about it. And its sad that most times, i'm the only one doing so.
