Well, you are right about Ye Ling'er. But the age of an actor isn't always the same as the age of the character they are playing. Sometimes, some characters are immature and the actors need to act accordingly, no matter how much older they are. Also, S2 is not the same S1, in many aspects. S1 was just an introduction. FX was protected and reckless to a fault. It is S2 that we see his actions actually leading to the consequences they should. Of course, the writers have created a marvelous tension graph, with some scenes being extremely emotional only to be followed with comic ones. I know this takes away some of the seriousness of the show and story, but we need to understand that this was not developed with just the seasoned viewers in mind. Not many people can sit through 30+ eps of pure plot. It doesn't have great outcomes in terms of rating, as was the case for tteotm. S1 was also somewhat like a stallion story with an overpowered MC(keyword- somewhat). In my opinion, S2 is better than S1, but I get it that you just prefer S1. Everyone is different and has their own choices. But,

Even FX doesn't come close to threatening his power, because all the power he has was given to him by the emperor and he can take it away anytime he wants, as was seen in S1, when all the protection given to him was taken away. This emperor is by far the most realistic one I have ever seen. He knows how to balance not only ministers in court, but also princes. Perfectly balanced parts of good and evil.

Comedy has been an essential part of JOL and it is what sets it apart from other dramas. If you watch more carefully, the graph is actually very delicate, it seamlessly shifts from a serious scene to a comic one. In fact, the styling, acting and BGM(not ost) is better in S2 than S1. I hope you will give this season another shot and not let down the time you have spent waiting for its release. This season has just started, who knows if you will start liking it more later?
