genuinely how is this show so loved ? im on ep 4 and the way kiyoi treats hira keeps making me wildly uncomfortable…
This series won several awards and received praise from various non-BL directors, producers and other people in the entertainment industry, like the male mangaka of Chainsaw Man. The author of the novel series this is based on, apart from recognition and love from the BL community, has also won the Japanese Booksellers Award for the two of her mainstream novels (the only writer so far to do it twice), so a lot of ardent Japanese book-lovers think she can write. Both leads loved the series enough to still speak warmly of it and make occasional references to it long after they might've been required to do it by the PR team.
I'm only writing all this to say that a lot of people who are not some occasional watchers didn't think this was some kind of overhyped junk. Maybe this title is not for you, or maybe you watched it with subpar translations, or maybe you didn't pay enough attention to see what was really being said or shown at some key moments... Anyway, the love for this series is far from being unfounded.
Do you mean fansubs or some of the official English translations?
I totally get what you mean. My Japanese is not that fluent yet, and I'm definitelly missing some finer points, but even what I can understand is a cut above of the lines we usually see in dramas. Makes sense since it's based on a novel, not manga or an original script.
Do you mean fansubs or some of the official English translations?
Should be official then, but there're several versions of them, and according to people, the Gaga version is worse than the Viki version, for example. But UtsuKare has good fansubs. Season 1 and 2 were translated by Lollipop https://www.bilibili.tv/en/space/1440624260 (except ep4 of season 2), and the movie has a great translation by Whatawonder.
Can you give us idea how to log in d-o coz I tried several times but it’s still not verified.
So they actually have different verification requirements which you need to follow, not the ones listed on the registration page. I know... Here's the actual requirements: https://drama-otaku.com/registration-status/ They seem to open the site for registering for a few days at the beginning of each month, so try to register on June 2nd or something.
The subber is still subbing!Subs till E9: https://harunotakee.livejournal.com/You may want to look at the MDL…
Sure, just find an app that supports subs, make sure that the downloaded subs and video are in the same folder and have the same name, open the video in that app and watch. Or just google how to watch videos with subs on ipad.

It's a link to a discussion thread here, on mydramalist, with links to various translations of books, manga and dramaCDs for Utsukushii Kare. Among them is a link to mine too.

Actually, the official English translation of book 3 from Tokyopop comes out on December 3 this year! You can already find listings for all 3 books of the main storyline on Amazon and other book retailers (search for My Beautiful Man Light Novel). The only downside is that they don't seem to release an ebook version, and the books are quite pricey even for paperbacks. If you're impatient, you can read a machine-translated version of my translation (link is in the post above). I hope to be done with the whole translation by early June.

One of the characters undergoes a temporary transformation of the way he looks, and it might be hard to pull off technically even if the actor himself and his management agree to it. There's no English translation of the book ATM. I'm more than halfway done translating it to Russian, and I provide links to a decent-ish English machine translation (because Google and other browser ones really suck) at the beginning of each chapter for those who can tolerate machine translation at all. But currently that's it. Links should be in the first post here https://kisskh.at/discussions/utsukushii-kare/67669-utsukushii-kare-english-novel
But if you know some major Asian language, like Korean or Vietnamese, try to look for the official translation to it.
Genuinely asking, is this the same ending with the novel?? Or this isn't the ending? I'm sorry, English is my…
The novel series still continues. Only a couple of things from book 3 have made it into the movie, but the majority of it hasn't been adapted yet. And the author plans to write book 4 this year, which isn't supposed to be the final in the Hira and Kiyoi story either.
That said, the scriptwriter for the drama and the movie added a lot of content that wasn't in the books (like, everything school-related in the season 2 and later, including the proposal - the book ends when the photos from the photo shoot are released), so the movie ending feels more final. Also, book 3 storyline would be harder to adapt to screen. In short, they have source material if they want to continue. Even if it's not enough now (I don't think it is, but others do), it definitely would be once the next book is out. But we're not sure if they even plan to continue.
It actually wasn't, but since it doesn't gloss over the questionable behavior and has some layers that you can…
There's putting yourself into character's shoes and there's pushing your opinion onto someone without considering their personality and circumstances. There's also accepting that people's ideas of what makes them happy are different. And that sometimes you're not even expected to put yourself into character's shoes.

Why are you talking about me suddenly? This drama never presented itself as some kind of dating manual or a perfect example of a couple that everyone shoud follow. I don't self-insert myself into Hira or Kiyoi, and just beause these characters are good for each other doesn't mean that they'll be good for anyone. And I wouldn't call KIyoi an "abusive bully" or label the drama "toxic". What is even toxic for you? Characters finding a relationship that helps them grow and become better?

They both are realistic people, not flawless angels that don't exist outside of fiction. Both fulfill each other's needs and help each other grow and become better people. If it's not a healthy relationship then I don't know what is.
iirc he was working overtime. could stay working otherwise
Nope, he was going to be at home initially. After they deigned to invite him he also got an unexpected visit to a new client at work, so he explained the day before that he would be a bit late. Besides, the party was on the weekend.
And anyway, holding a party while the dad is working overtime without inviting him sounds even more shitty.
An update since this is a big deal in Japanese media and on social media right now: the publisher of the original…
Ashihara said that her only point of contact with the drama team was through producers, so it's quite possible that the screenwriter really wasn't told the creator's demands. I wouldn't say that it contradicts what was said in the now deleted blog post. I didn't read the publisher statement(s?), but I've seen screenshots of the last instagram post of the screenwriter, and to keep things fair, apart from saying that she was unaware of mangaka's demands, she also apologizes, conveys her condolences and says that she's reflecting on her actions and that she's going to delete her social network accounts.
About a month after the drama has finished, the mangaka wrote a blog post voicing her frustrations with the way adaptation was handled or rather mishandled, deleted that post a couple of days later and then was found dead the next day. It appears to be a suicide. You can read more here or from other sources: https://animecorner.me/sexy-tanaka-san-mangaka-hinako-ashihara-found-dead-in-apparent-suicide/
