Hi Edina! Well, it deals with the typical melo stuff: abuse, vengeance, emotional manipoulation...there is lots and lots of angst. How are you today?

Yeona, you are being helpful. Just focus on your website, if you need some help, maybe I could be helpful in some way. Hahah don't feel bad about finding something enjoyable. I"m glad you're having fun with it. I want to watch it one day.

So far the only Japanese dish I had is sushi in varios versions from several different restaurants as well as deli but the deli version gives it a rather so-so name. I also had a chance to eat some japanese pear, which I liked. Right! There is just something about father-son bond and how it works. I really don't understand my fascination myself.

I'll have to make a point of watching this sometimes during the Christmas period then. I met Kusanagi in Ninkyo helper and he somehow impressed me a lot in that role. I also liked him in 1,778 stories if my and my wife, which I also found a charming take on dealing with an imminent death of a loved one.

Ando Lloyd is visual eyecandy, well produced picture. That's all. I'm disappointed when a drama doesn't live up to its hype so this time I just dropped it. Did you vote on any dramas in MDL polls?

kind-hearted guy who explores the possilibity of protecting Japan peacfully by building up a civilization equalling that of others, by using the technology the west brings with it. But he is exposed to a lot of conflicting viewpoints to this approach as well as a lot of obstacles, political and personal. I admire his simplicity and at the same time curiosity that seemed to lead him to try and finding ways to reconcile two modes of thinking about Japan. Also, he seems to have had a very good family. I know he kept in touch with his sister who always encouraged him to seek his own way of life. I found that to be very fresh and rather progressive in itself. So much for my thoughts for now. I need to do a proper reading on the period. I'd be interested in reading personal accounts from the time, diaries, letters, if available in English. Do you have any recommendations?

the military and using western technologies all the more urgent and I guess this is what Ryoma perceives. But from watching this drama I do get a sense of fear of those unknown things aside from muddled politics of the shogunate. But darn! Hanpeita was shown with a lot of dignity. He seems to have been a very skilled, learned man, a man who knew his way of life and saw it through...I think Hanpeita affected Ryoma in a large way.

I love the interpretation by Masahrau Fukuyama. He embodies Ryoma! I don't want this drama to end, I know what happenes to him and I don;t feel like seeing it just yet, I;ve grown to love him a lot. I find Ryoma inspiring on a personal level. He just went out to the world and experienced it. It takes him a while to develop a concrete worldview and a concrete stance. He starts out as a little naive but

Hard to say. Marry Him aspired to be a slice of life but messed up. Still ideas were discernible. Missing you is about feelings so it gets a little more suffocating to watch. It's revenge, tragic past, manipulative characters, but I can't say it's terrible. You just have to like to feel frustrated.

As for Ryoma. There is a lot to take, starting from the conflict on ending Japan;s isolation, the Joi movement, Ryoma's vision of technological advancement and the attempt to unify Choshu and Stasuma to overthrow the Bakufu with many details in between. I get to see a lot and it seems fairly accurate. I find it to be a very interesting period one that I'm likely to explore a little more, political strife and unrest is intense. The conflicts seem to make the importance of reforming

was very much full of heart.

I do like Kimmy though, I found him especially natural in good luck and pride...but sadly he fails to convince me in Ando Lloyd, byt maybe it;s just because the storyline is kind of silly. I like androids and what not but I felt the story here was completely inane. Good luck is one drama that I can watch over and over again. do you rewatch too? Do you have favourite dramas that you;ve rewatched countless of times?

Never tried tayiaki. You are referring to the dish, yes? Must be good if it would be worth to put off conquering the world for it :D

I try to but I mostly focus on the ones that catch my attention. They are always so vibrant though and the dancing numbers can be quite creative, they are a joy to watch. I think Judy introduced him to the buisness in the first place. As far as I know they were good friends.

Yeah I saw that film on MDL, it sounded very interesting seeing that I like family themes. I agree about Katori Shingo..unfortunately he tends to be a little too wooden to me. It works for certain character types but not always. Kusanagi has definitely something more gmanetic about him and Kimmy too of course..Except I confess that after seeing Densha otoko, I found that his acting a nerd in Ando Lloyd seemed a little fake in contrast to Atsushi's effort that

Probably out of a need to check how much torture I can tolerate
It;s too heavy, typical melo. These are a hit or a miss usually. Have a good day.

No I was referring to the original JIN Korean version is only a remake. I think you may be pleased with I hear your voice later on so have patience :) Mising you is a very heavy melodrama but again the child actors in partocular are good.

Not only that- after seeing Densha otoko, Kimmy struxk me as a little fake in trying to be a nerd. It put me off. Maybe I;ll finish it one day, but then again maybe not. I like a lot of sci-fi stuff like BladeRunner but this just isn't sticking for me at all.

Pretty much, but it's not the sole reason. Ryoma is quite captivating and I am finding a lot of affinities with him- at least in this version. I think they oragnised the seasons well. And Fukyama embodies Ryoma, I;;ve grown rather attached to him heh. I really do appreciate the travelogues at the end. They make things so much more interesting, especially when they show objects like Ryoma's personal letters.

I did start another drama, a heavy melodrama called missing you but I can't really continue with that one thinking about Ryomaden and what is happening.

Anyway, nice to see you're up and about MDL :)

That's what I heard too, he certainly gave off that impression on screen. He did one colaboration with Judy Garland in what remains my favourite Easter watch, Easter Parade...apparently she wanted Gene Kelly but gene Kelly had had an accident and broe his leg I think and so Astaire was cast. And so one lovely collaboration happened by accident...

Back to Ryoma... *_* You know what, I am going crazy here too. I feel like I"ve completely fall in love with this guy. lol. But with so many things happening and him doing more crazy things, it does make one wonder what would have happened IF...You're also right, Masahru should accept MORE roles unless he wants to be responsible for too much heartache ;-D

I guess it;s safe to assume that the

I hope you enjoy Mirror of the Sea. Conrad had a special affection for it, and he;s very particular about how he writes. He was always very deliberate in his writing. I did see parts of the Ioann Gruffud series, but I never had a chance to pick it up again. The Peck adaptation is staring back at me from my imdb watchlists :)

I liked the ambience in that special, it was somehow very lovely, the music and all, and very romantic too. Some facts may not agree with the actual events but I think the essence is there and Kano Miho is just so lovely, Okada Junichi likes the brooding, serious types I think.

Yes, I heard he passed away :( Such a loss but he's immortalised on screen now and leaves huge boots to fill

:) it sounds like a fairy original plot. Oh I heard it;s similar toi skip beat. I like skip beat the anime but the manga never finished so the story is never completed. I don't really like incomplete stories but I did enjoy skip beat. I haven;t seen either of the reply dramas yet, but I plan to start with 1994 soon.

What are you watching now? I do think mood is a key factor in enjoyment, alongside taste. Well if you feel like cute romance I recommend Nodame Cantabile. It has quirky characters and good progress together with all the specials and movies. Tonbi is currently my best for family dramas but if you like Tonbi you may want to see Monther with Asahida mama, a lovely young child actress. For heavy melodrama. which you seem to like given Secret, maybe Missing you? It stars this talented young 16 year old actor, albeit only for a couple of episodes. Queen inhyun;s man is also a pretty cute romance. Densha Otoko is abaout an otaku guy, he's rreally shy but his courage in opening up is inspiring. JIN is a time travel drama but it's very well done with superb atmosphere and good characters, although some of them may seem larger than life- they are historical figures though. How does ir sound?
