I agree with Jing's part but not with Xiang Liu's. XY was never sure of XL's feelings as he make everything as a fair deal you know. I agree, he is not his dream man but sometimes a person can fall for someone who never have been his/her dream person because life is not always like a person plans for it to be. She didn't kiss him 'cause she was afraid that he will become a man in her dreams that's not right for her as he is the person who was fated and had choosed to die with Chenrong army. He never intended to live a long life and betray Hong Jiang. If you have watched drama, then you might remember the scene after Cang Xuan's wedding when XY and XL went to sea and XL jumped into sea with XY and holding her in water, she then accepted to let him kiss her, of course it's because Jing broke her heart so she chose XL as second option but then he refused because he knew that she is choosing him as second one and he cannot give her priority over Chenrong, so he make everything like a deal so she thinks that she doesn't owe him anything. His move was quite successful as she never get to know his real feelings till the end. So you can't say she never had love for XL, it's just a matter of priority.
And if you're reading the book then you will know when XL broke her marriage with FL and took her away, he drugged her and asked her if she wanted to marry Shi Qi and she said yes, but when he asked her that whom she wanted to spend her life with, she remained silent and her head hurted that indicates she was going against her will and not want to letting anyone know what her answer is. If her answer is Jing or Shi Qi then it won't be a problem to let anyone know about it as she already accepted she wanted to marry him , then the question is what was in her mind that she didn't wanted to let anyone know and not even to herself, the answer was certainly Xiang Liu. She was jumbled with her feelings and Xiang Liu's never confession of love directly, made it more complex and difficult for her to know his feelings.
If that's the case then she might have fallen for Xuan, not to anyone else, I guess.
If she hadn't experienced these past traumas then she might be in politics as well 'cause she have never experienced abandonment from everyone and she will never be afraid of loneliness and having hopes. What makes her character different from A'Nian are the bad experiences she faced in her life after the death of her mother.
I watched this drama last year for the first time and till now I've watched it four times already. It's one of my favourite drama and Xu Kai is my top favourite actor. I've never posted a review for any drama before this, it means how much I liked it.

You should add a spoiler tag to this 'cause it's from the book and not shown in drama. But yes, Xiang Liu is the best and Jing is also good in his own way.
This drama is really so good and I've watched it twice already. I've posted my review for this ages ago but never dared to pin it here, because of my poor English skills 😂😂. But now I'm finally attaching it here. Ummmm! It's quite detailed though and contain spoilers. It's the review after watching the drama only and not after reading the book.
It's good to have a man's perspective. We are fighting for days and it gets extreme these few days so good to hear you're a man and have similar perspective as us.
If you wanna see Cang Xuan's plot more then you should watch S2. I agree with most of the things you said but not with all. Regardless the non-agreements of mine, it's a great analysis.
