I didn't think I could despise an empress dowager as much as I did the one in Under the Queen's Umbrella.

I hate the character, but the actress is doing a great job.

No, he’s not evil, but he and Xiahou Dan are under a lot of pressure. I could see how he would think that this “demonic consort” is too dangerous. Honestly, I don’t remember him writing those types of letters in the donghua or the novel, but maybe I forgot. Once he meets Wanyin, his opinion of her changes.

Yes, he lied. He transmigrated when he was a young teen. I think the book said he was in middle school.

He’s a very important character, and one of my favorites. Bai is proof that Xiahou Dan is playing a long game and is a master strategist.

To add to @Mahtab's answer: the world that Wanyin and Xiahou Dan are in is incredibly dangerous with all the competing factions, superstitions, and complex politics. One of the reoccurring themes of this drama is having a companion to share one's burden. Wanyin keeps saying that she is glad to have Xiahou Dan with her because this would be too hard without him. Xie Yong'er laments that she doesn't have anyone on her side. We're about to see exactly how hard it was for Xiahou Dan to transmigrate by himself --his experiences molded him into mad tyrant. So, Wanyin became so emotional at the thought of losing her trust in Xiahou Dan because she'd be losing her safety net, her shield, her co-conspirator, and would be truly alone in an alien, hostile world.

I have a serious issue with this show... each episode feels too short! I can't believe I saw 8 episodes already! Need more stat

Yes, he’s a transmigrator, too, but he arrived when he was a child. He was emotionally neglected, sexually abused, manipulated, and driven insane. When the female lead arrives, she becomes his last ray of hope.

I’ve read the novel and seen the donghua. I think both will enrich your understanding of the characters and their unique situation. The donghua has set the bar high for this drama, so I’m excited to see this adaption. But if you like to watch a drama with minimal spoilers then don’t watch the donghua.

It’s about 114 chapters, but it reads very quickly. I like the novel because it gives you some insight into the characters’ motives and thoughts - especially the ending because the show skipped some parts. Give it a try!

I loved the Crowned Clown. I think HMH would do great in something like that.

Thanks for the recommendation! I have seen and adored My Journey to You for the same reason and his relationship with his didi. I haven’t seen Female General, though, but I don’t like the trope of women pretending to be men. So I’m really excited for this drama.
