But now someone unearthed something and the evil archangel / devil incarnate came back (it took about three minutes of rock-pushing and green littering.)
There's something off - for me - with the pacing. I get it they want to have some time to show us how mundane supernatural beings can become, but it was boring. From all the things they could ever do, they choose non-sensical violent money retrieval from gangsters? Okay, let's accept that, but why does everything have to be edited in such a way that nothing has any tension, I don't care about any of them or their issues, they're mysterious but at the same time such idiots. I never expected to be bored on a first ep of 8 about supernatural zodiac creatures (that now are called angels because I guess Western audience needs to realise their level of power or something) and then I don't even know if I want to watch the second (because definitely the newly unearthed devil will be evil and stuff. EVEN if he's freaking PHS.)
Something's also wrong - for me - with the character portrayal. Did we really need that detective who's probably either one of them or another supernatural to go through a whole luxuries store AND go gift his loot AND the giftee refuse it for about more than a quarter of episode time?! I don't know who these guys are, all that it shows me it's that their Chief / Tiger is an idiot wrapped around some woman / another zodiac figure's little finger. Should I care why?!
I know MDS is kind of a big thing in Korea and around and he brings in people in the cinemas, but I've already seen him in Bad Guys (he's not a stranger I mean) and for a drama to work it needs a whole cast to work together and bring in the magic. It can't stay on the one big name. And even with PHS added in - barely there, at the end, it won't survive without some actual plot that's not an action movie spread around 8 eps.
The way it's filmed, the lighting, the colours... I was expecting something actually enticing for a show about zodiac creatures doing stuff. This is instead the level of some of the earlier Bud Spencer playing Piedone movies - Italians should know the style. Not saying it couldn't work... but it's freaking outdated as hell.

I didn't like that Dairong became a hanger-on, basically, after the case of her father ended. She was cute, and it gave Feng QingZhuo chances to be lovey-dovey (and he took them all LOL), but the whip-smart girl was gone and instead we got a damsel who needed rescuing from time to time. Sad about it.
I kind of thought Feng QingZhuo would end up being Bei Kun ('cause the second brother turned up missing, and he's so good with poisons and stuff), but I do think Tong Shuang made more sense (plot-wise). Particularly with the boulder death LOL, that was so random until it wasn't that random anymore. But wow indeed, did He LuoLuo pull a total seachange. I almost didn't believe it was the same actor. He's good (and it wasn't just the hairdo and makeup, his expressions totally changed. And yet he was still recognisable... from time to time. He really is good.) I think his and FQZ's friendship is the most painful loss in the drama.
TBH the first half was better and more tightly written, IMHO, and they spent too much time on the second part on the HaiYa mystery that wasn't all that mysterious at all. They could have had a CliffNotes on that and got more action in the capital. But oh well. I guess they wanted some nature shots too.
BUT! In the end I got my wished-for BFF relationship between XBM and ZKY and that's all I had wanted.

I find it funny that Chen FeiYu is playing Mo Ran in Immortality (that we will probably never ever going to see), and he's partly a demon from the Butterfly-Boned Beauty Feast tribe. They were hunted into extinction because if cultivators ate their flesh, they'd gain cultivation ranks immediately.
I guess it's just CFY's fate to play a demon who has to be cannibalised into cultivation, LOL.
