I think with lovers bug, the requirement is that there must be love in their hearts, affection during the implantation (and removal), and the person receiving must be willing.

The reason why the implantation was not successful for ZhuanXu was because while they both has the love and the affection, he was unwilling (probably because he was unaware that Xiao Liu was Xiao Yao).

I think she gradually fell in love with Xiang Liu, a different type of love she feels for ShiQi. While the love for ShiQi was a romantic one, I think XiangLiu and Xiao Yao were true soulmates. He knew his love for her, she didn’t know that she was loved, and that she loved in return.

It’s pretty close to the source material. Really good. I finished the novel and enjoyed it, it helps to elevate the understanding the drama more if you read the novel.
