Incredible. Zhang Ruo Yun is steadly becoming one of my favorite actors. The storyline is great, the cast is stellar (how are they all so pretty and talented!?), loved the characters (the Xu family is best family), and the production is pretty top notch. Very much anticipating another season. Watch if you like clever plots, smart, likable characters, and cool fighting scences. Definitely helped to hold me over until JOL season 2.
I really wanted to like this, and did like some of it, but I ultimately dropped it after episode 26. The overall plot was good, the fighting was good, acting was good, ost was fun, I liked some of the characters, but in the end it didn't make up for the frustration of dumb actions taken by some characters, the unnecessary drama between the main cast, the goddamn awful romance storylines, and eventually the realization I was about half way through show and I didn't really care anymore. Cut out the romance and tighten the plot and this would have been much better.
Edit: I skipped to the last few episodes and thought it was a decent ending. Lol
Incredible. I can definitely see why people usually praise this after Nirvana in Fire. While not quite as good as NIF (in my opinion) the writing in this show is fantastic! The characters too, omg, are wonderful. A lot of shows sometimes lose steam in the second half but JOL actually gets better and better as it goes on. The acting, the story, the OST, I loved everything. The only problem I have so far is Wan'er's character. She's terribly boring next to literally every one else. Maybe she'll have more of a role in a later season (I haven't read the book) but right now I'm not sure what the point of her is. Fan Xian has more chemistry with other characters later in the show and they're far more interesting, as well. But I'll wait and see what happens! Can't wait for season 2! Watch this if you like political intrigue and well written characters, not romance. Though lighter and far funnier than NIF I still recommend this if you like complicated stories and ambitious, ambiguous characters. 9/10
I know, right? i mean, i saw this 2 years ago, it was the drama that well, ruined me for every other drama, chinese…
I absolutely agree! Every time I watch a new show (even ones that I'm enjoying) I think "Man, I should really watch NIF again." Joy of Life is on my watch list, but maybe I should move it up if it can be mentioned next to NIF. Lol
I try not to be too harsh, but omg, the FL is truly awful. I read the comments but was still unprepared for her personality and, frankly, the complete uselessness of her character (why is she here? What has she done that a background character couldn't do? What even was that disgusting kidnapping plot???). I've kept watching the show so far (only on episode 12) for the mysteries (pretty clever) and bromance (excellent), but I definitely know why some people had to drop the show because of her, which is a shame because the show is good. No hate on the actress, either, just whoever wrote her character.
While this was a rather slow start for me by episode 8 or so I couldn't stop watching. I just had to know what happened next. I loved the characters, especially Wohuan, and the actors all did a great job. The ost was decent, the production was quite nice, and the fight choreography was amazing. The romance was meh, but I tend to think that about all romance, and I skipped through most of it. The bromance, on the other hand, was incredible and made the show particularly enjoyable to watch (I'm pretty sure the girls were added to cover up the fact that Wohuan and Jian were definitely in love. Fight me.) The stories were fun, if a bit repetitive, but they all came together at the end for a nice conclusion (definitely watch this is you like mysteries in the vain of Detective Conan.) Now, we just need a second season...
