It was a mutual breakdown, or at least, that's how I interpret that kind of behaviour. Both characters are carrying massive emotional baggage and unresolved grief or guilt. They knew it was over and were mourning it.
Giving in physically wasn't a celebration. It was a desperate attempt to hold onto a reality or dream of what they were supposed to have been.
Tee's face before he started thrusting. That's not a man in the throes of a hot erection or tender loving devotion. That was exhaustion to me. That was, 'let me run this out of my system for a moment because I'm really tired of running after you'.
