NDS can cry a river but one single tear drop from HJP and I lose my shit. KSH breathed so much life to that character.…
Exactly. I find it rather annoying when he cries. Maybe because there's actually no reason to cry but he does. ALWAYS.
In JP's case it's the opposite. There are a million reasons to cry but he tries his best to smile. That makes tears flow out of my eyes even before I realize. T.T
I agree w this analogy but the excecution leaves much to be desired. To me it came off as though dosan isnt actually…
I felt the same. They failed in presenting their theme & just focused on fan service by adding unnecessary cliches & filler scenes.
It could have been a brilliant drama showing us the journey of 4 different individuals with their unique back-stories & out-looks on life. Their dynamics when they cross each others paths & how they change after meeting each other.
Such a waste of potential. It has beautiful cinematography & amazing OST. And of course, talented cast too.
But I completely agree with DoDal endgame. They are made for each other. JP's philosophy of life is completely different from DM's & DS's.
DM always wanted to be adventurous but she wasn't brave enough. She never opened the music box until DS inspired her to.
She was afraid that it would have a melody she didn't like / have no melody at all. For her the DS in the letters was similar to the music box. It was enough for her to know that someone was there for her. So she didn't intend to meet the DS in the letters.
But after meeting DS & opening the music box, she got rid of her apprehensions. She found the courage to follow her dreams (symbolized by the ball DS gives her). She quit her job & was ready to travel in the same path as DS.
At this point, the original writer of the letters is as insignificant as the melody of the music box. What matters is her 'new found courage' to follow her dreams & the person who inspired her to.
When she found out that the music box has a different melody/ the letters had a different writer, she was disappointed but she didn't regret her choice of opening it. This made her realize that the journey is more important than the destination.
Though JP always helped her & protected her, his path & philosophy don't match or overlap with that of DM's. They are headed to a different destination & have vastly different travel plans, so they were never meant to be. Eventually she would end up DS who is traveling in the same path.
I think this is what KSH was implying in his interview with 'The Swoon' - Netflix when he said that they were meant to be.
If the message is "Sail without a map", then what is the purpose of 'Sandbox' ?
DM's dad felt that people never took a step towards their dreams, as they were afraid of getting hurt or getting lost in the sea.
So he wished that there would be a Sandbox/ map to help people navigate their way & enjoy their adventure without getting hurt/lost.
It is similar to JP's opinion. But DS doesn't mind getting hurt/ lost. He is ready to swing without a 'Sandbox' & sail without a map. Then why was he desperate to get into Sandbox ?
Why did they try to name the drama as 'Sandbox' if it is deemed to be useless at the end ? They are indirectly implying that idealistic & adventurous souls will pave a new path instead of relying on a map/ sandbox.
They should have named it as "Sail off without a map", tagline - 'you may find a rainbow'.
This drama makes me appreciate 'Boys over flowers' & 'Heirs'. They are cringe worthy but have a much more consistent plot than Start-Up. They had better executed love triangles which at least make sense.
And the most important part is 'Heirs' was not marketed as a business themed drama. They were true to the 'high school romance' genre.
TvN:- We need a drama because we need to fill the slot from October 17 to December 6. We don't care even if that…
TvN : *after reading the plot* Oh ! But we already have a fantasy - 'The tale of the nine tailed' airing at almost the same time
Writer : Then lets introduce this one as coming-of-age story based on tech & business. We can market it as "Youth based coding romance". I have a great plot for the first 2 eps.
Especially when they are being portrayed by NJH & Suzy. This drama really achieved the impossible.
In JP's case it's the opposite. There are a million reasons to cry but he tries his best to smile. That makes tears flow out of my eyes even before I realize. T.T
JP lost but Seon Ho won our hearts ♡♡♡

Did the writer experience something similar to JP & actually did her best to express her feelings ?
