I came here just to write the same thing after watching the last episode 🤣 It was really unnecessary to make…
I actually really liked the first several episodes when the 3 were plotting against each other (minus of course those hard-to-watch moments when the FL gets hurt so many times) - this story could still work even without the romance.
Not that I mind the romance - I'm liking the story between Jiang Ci and Wei Zhao at this half-way point too. But yes, I agree, PY is another matter haha.
Never read the novel, but to me Pei Yan would be much more interesting and complex if it weren't for these scenes of him obsessively pining for some girl. Something more subtle would be more befitting such a usually calm, calculative person. Or maybe he's just truly a psycho obsessive-possessive type? Either way, Jeremy Tsui could act most anything and I'd still watch it lol (except Chong Zi - just can't bring myself to watch it).
I'm also enjoying Ren Jialun in this. The last 2 period/costume dramas that I liked from him were Under the Power and One and Only, so it's been a while.
Landy Li is wonderful in this - balancing the drama and more light-hearted moments so well.
That waterboarding scene is difficult to watch. It's interesting (and I think rare these days in C dramas) to…
I really liked the novel for LYF, hence why I stuck with it to the end. The first season follows the novel pretty faithfully. It's due to some drastic changes they had to make for S2 that I think it suffered.
I don't mind sad/bad endings if they make sense for the story. I haven't read the novel for Love of Nirvana, so we'll have to see!

LOL. I watched the first half or so of The Princess Royal, but I guess I just lost interest. Couldn't get myself to start Are You the One. It's all good, I know everyone has different tastes, but in general this year has been lackluster for me. Even Lost You Forever S2 was a bit disappointing - I loved S1.

I like how the 3 leads are all intelligent and that it's not a simple I fall for you instantly type of story. They all have their own goals, and love is not (yet) in their minds. In fact, if romance weren't a part of this story, I'd still watch it - it's compelling enough so far. I've been so bored this year so far with most Chinese period dramas, so it's nice to have something a bit more interesting to follow now.
That waterboarding scene is difficult to watch. It's interesting (and I think rare these days in C dramas) to see a ML like our Wei Zhao not always have the upper hand. He's had to see multiple people under him die or get hurt because of the FL messing his plans. So I get his frustration - but his actions are definitely egregious. And I don't blame Jiang Ci - she's just trying to survive and get out of a chess game she never wanted to be a part of. I am curious to see if/how Wei Zhao makes up for his cruelty. And I am interested to see how our FL develops as she learns how truly gray and dangerous people can be especially when pushed into impossible quandaries. I'm hoping she remains a shining light in a sea of corrupted, damaged people.
By ep 8, I'm enjoying this cat and mouse game among all 3 of our leads. Never mind the romantic storyline to come, it's just really fascinating to see 3 really smart people with different goals trying to get what they want.
