SMY struggled in fight with Mu Bai and his puppets (the scene where he left the secret passage) because he was injured, he had already used most of his qi while protecting Patriarch and I think he needs to wait to restrore after using his Eighteen Sword Technique. I remember Mu Bai mentioning something like that. Just my speculation.
