That is in every kingom and in every country. ELITES do not want poor people to take over. Self sabotage is not…
The emperor is not a puppet and he is not miscast. the aristocratic families are the foundation of the nation. They control and support a lot of things. Even if they have too much power, completely wiping or taking them out would mean that the nation will fail. It'll crash and burn and what is left will be taken over by other nations. So the only way to do things is to go slowly or step by step.
The current emperor is doing a lot and trying his best. He is domineering enough and is obviously not a coward. The only other solution is tyranny and is that what you would prefer? Li Chuan became something of a tyrant in their past life. He used force and cruelty to accomplish a lot of things before he stepped back. The country suffered greatly for it in the process.

Shangguan leader is also not miscast. He is not the one running the country. Why do you think powerful people are supposed to have a menacing look to be convincing? Are they all psychopaths? This story is basically about how they lived in those days. Which means they were normal people with normal looks and all these happenings were parts of their daily lives.

So more on the politics backstory.

The aristocratic families controlled so many things. They had the tights to own vast land, servants and slaves. They could own soldiers and some were giving permits to engage in things like iron smelting, etc. And they were exempt from taxes. Their descendants and family members were also appointed into official positions without needing to write any examinations and they had no quotas restricting them.
On the other hand, there were ordinary or poor families like the Pei and Qin family. PWX's dad was recognised by the crown prince, the current emperor, and someone in the Qin family was noticed for his poetry, and then they had military prowess, that is how they became an aristocratic family. In Hauling, the aristocratic families are divided into 3 levels, and the Shangguan and Su families are in the top. I do not remember if the Pei and Qin families even classify under the 3rd level.
The imperial exams were an opportunity for people from poor families to get official positions and lift their families up. But this was made very difficult by the aristocratic families. They were the ones that set every thing up for the imperial exams, so they could replace names with people they favoured and not give a chance to the poor students. PWX would not have been a top scorer if his dad was not already recognised. They would have made him lose his position. Even for the poor students that finally made it and passed the imperial exams, they were given very low positions and they made things very difficult for them at work, so most of them would end up quitting. So many poor students, when it was close to the time for the exams, they would come to the capital and stay there and submit poetry or other works they had written to nobles, in hopes of getting recognised.

The other problem with this is that children from aristocratic families had all the resources, including time and comfort, they needed to be very well educated. They were raised to excel in all the arts. Martial arts, literature, sports, etiquette, etc. So obviously it would also be difficult for a poor student to compete, even after they had studied for the same amount of time.
The other argument and issue was that students from poor backgrounds that eventually became officials did not have integrity. They were not motivated to carry out their duties and took bribes to do anything. Students from aristocratic families on the other hand were taught about dignity and integrity and etiquette and how to maintain their reputations. They were taught order and rules. This leads to another of SRQ's points. In these families, they took care of things internally. They disciplined based on the rules of the family. This is something SRQ learnt and what he wanted to maintain.

Today, I want to give us perspective on SRQ. Yes, I'm still the one that wants to poke him in the eyes and sew his mouth shut lol. This will be long, but it gives a lot of backstory to the politics in the show.

LR and SRQ actually had upbringing's with somewhat similar demands. Although they were not the exact same, they were so much more similar compared to the way PWX grew up. The Pei family were originally an ordinary family from Louzhou until his father wrote the imperial exams and I think he was able to come into contact with the emperor while he was still the crown prince, so with his smarts, he was able to enter the court and become an official and because he was good with money too, he was able to grow his wealth. These are things PWX inherited from his father. Even in their past life, he managed the fief and accounts of the Princess and grew it. Anyway, his family is not like the 8 original aristocratic families in Haujing or like the centuries old aristocratic family that is the Su family, who is not originally from Hauling, but is centuries old and even the changes in dynasties have not affected them. Pei and Qin families are more similar, I have decided to discuss this in another comment.
Back to SRQ. SRQ is the 2nd son, but is the one that is set to take charge of his family. His elder brother basically rebelled and rejected responsibility for the family when he was much younger, so it all fell on the 2nd son. So SRQ grew up having it ingrained into his head every single day, how he was supposed to take over the family and the things he was to do and not to do. He used to have to recite the family rules and some of those things they took as important every single day. He entered the court when he was just 12 years old. So this guy has been primed to take over, to not turn out like his brother for his entire life. To maintain the dignity and prosperity of his centuries old aristocratic family. So more than the fact that his family was annihilated and he wanted revenge, he was acting and is acting to protect what he has always known. And when you hear his reasons, like LR in the past, this is the direction with the least difficulty and resistance. So like LR said to him, his heart and body are on opposing sides.
I absolutely loved reading the book because when you hear the reasons for why every character past and present, did what they did, you would agree with them, even though in the end, you may not agree. They were right in their own ways and had very valid things to protect.

Title The Princess Royal Spoiler
Do you want serious spoilers?
So by tomorrow's episodes, pwx starts really flirting with her, but he has still not confessed. He gets inspired to do a grand confession from a conversation he has with LR from one of the novels she reads lol. So while LR is trying to use herself to lure assassins, Pwx thinks she asked him out on a date and goes to the place and spends a fortune on an elaborate set up in order to confess to her. In the end, it fails because of the assassins and he gets really upset. Anyway, he still confesses and she asks him to wait for her.
So later on, in this phase of her not yet confirming and outwardly saying her feelings, something happens that makes the emperor suspect them. So to protect his life and career, especially because she fell into the trap, she suggests that they get a divorce. And the way she 'easily' suggested it and everything had PWX fuming because he did not want to be the type of person to give up on their marriage and their relationship for power.
Then she decides to rent a boat and have male entertainers after their outbursts and deciding to divorce in the heat of the moment, and also to make it look like they have a bad relationship and so want to divorce. Then while he is lashing out at home, he sees the letters she wrote to him in today's episodes and goes to find her with a sword lol. Then he sees her with the guys. They were entertaining her and he takes her away. Then they argue badly and stuff and she confesses and etc. That was where their relationship as a married couple properly took off. But it is also funny because they agree to act like he wanted a divorce from her and eventually, the emperor mandated it lol. But they were divorced just for show.

He already told her in that rain scene and in other multiple ways. She is the one who has not told him.
He definitely always cared about her, it is just that he was saying it was for the past to her. He knows that he has to take things very easy with her.

From the spoilers that I read. They divorce but it's for political reasons, not due to falling out of love or…
It is all completely true. That divorce was completely for show, especially for the emperor lol.

i love that rain scene, when someones emotion boil up and came out with WORDfor long time i did not see that type…
Yes. That rain scene was so so necessary to address the root of the issues in their past life. It was necessary for them to move forward even as friends, before becoming lovers.

He told her it was about the past. It was a 20 year late confession and apology and clearing up of misunderstandings. He also said so in the beginning of ep 12. It was not a present day confession. He is now just making up his mind to fight to stay with her. Being good to her was always something he was going to do regardless.

The characterizations make so much sense to me. They've had 17 years of misunderstanding, hurt, and resentment.…
Exactly!!! It was so well written in the novel. It took the time that it should have and when it bloomed, it was so so beautiful. They was so so much "content" of them together. You could see how much they had grown.

im so confused with this drama. i thought after that confession scene in ep 11, finally there would be some progress…
He confessed about the past and in ep 12, told her it was an apology about the past, to clear up misunderstandings for their future collaboration. It was not a present life confession. They will get to that soon.

Reading the novel has me in so much pain about the 40 episode limit. The people in government that brought this up and approved it truly do not like us at all.
