I think they were going for a more menacing 456 that is sick of talking to people that never listen, and that worked for a while and they managed to show how much 456 has changed by him killing 388, but then they fumbled and didn't commit to that direction, made him fall back to his old ways when he failed to kill the sleeping enemies, and his entire behavior in the last game.
Frontman seems sad when player 456 died and tears can be seen in his eyes oh damn he fell in love
I think he was planning for 456 to kill the other players like he did and become his second-in-command, but that didn't happen, and he was sad for losing that but also sad that he had lost what 456 still had to the very end:his humanity and morality

Yeah, he should have killed all of them when they were sleep, it was the only solution, he had no other plan or option, it was the last kindness thrown at him by the host, but he failed, and went to the next game with no plans and just put himself and the baby in immediate danger.
