If, like me, you were misled by the title and were hoping for more screen time on the pearl diving industry, I highly recommend looking up "Haenyeo" – Korean women pearl divers. The Korean doco 'Breathing Underwater' shows the lives of modern Haenyeo who are still using traditional diving practices: https://kisskh.at/20564-breathing-underwater
Bless the granny who, as we were coming out of the movie theatre, explained the part of the Breaking Hell's Gate ritual where they leap through the fire is about the cleansing of the spirit. Wish I could've chatted to her more to see how the film resonated with her, but she was hanging out with fam.
I first discovered Dilmurat via Eternal Love, pretty safe to say that was one of her breakout roles. I found her acting pretty decent in The King's Woman too. That last video is case in point I reckon.

Watching exactly the type of shows that Zhan describes when I was a teenager definitely tainted my perception of what a healthy romantic relationship should look like. And then there's a whole other essay to be written about the reinforcement of gender stereotypes too...
Thank you for your comment. I think ZLH did his role fine- for me I found XW to be problematic and forceful romantically.…
I'd take this a step further and would say that that what XW does is literally sexual assault. And then the creators of the drama try to convince the audience that it's okay by playing romantic music during the scene. Like, I'm sorry, I cannot suspend disbelief that much.
The dark side of pearl diving wasn't only restrained to NE Asia. It was also a super dangerous industry in the Torres Strait: https://nit.com.au/30-11-2024/15153/taking-a-deep-dive-into-queenslands-pearling-history
