My view is there is no right or wrong from both sides. Zhao Qianfan disobeyed the court edict by opening the gate at the border between the north Song and Liao dynasties. For the court, daddy Zhao had just compromised the peace treaty between both dynasties.

My guess is Quiafan may have told her as Chi Pan was asking Pan’er why are you reading the book, is it related to Qianfan? Then he sqid that he should have not let Pan’er meet Qianfan last time. I think he was referring to the scene at the bridge when Qianfan took Pan’er’s hand and pulled her away. I may be wrong.

I think it is the official record of the events or dare I say the root cause of Pan’er ‘s dad downfall. Please see my discussion with Peachblossom below which has an explanation from Chinese fans.

My understanding is that Daddy Xiao is executing the law to the letter to preserve the Song/Liao treaty rather than what has led us to believe that he is some kind of evil person that manages to demote Ke Zheng from his position for example. The evil may be Qi Mu instead.

There will be a scene in ep29 where Qianfan riding his horse back to Pan’er wounded and vomiting blood with Xiao Wei’s voice in the background telling him that their dad killed Pan’er father and he would never let Qianfan marry Pan’er.

In addition, some Chinese fan did some research on their fathers’ feud as follows:

1. Zhao Paner’s family was convicted, which is indeed related to Xiao Qinyan

There is a picture of a book (P1) at the end of the play and shows that:

"On the 27th day of the twelfth lunar month of last year, the inspector Zhao ... resisted the edict and opened the gate of Dongguang County to kill Beirenjie ... Zuo Secretary Xiao Qin said that the two countries would be disturbed for the collegial discussion ... the order was handed over to Dali Temple for handling"

It means that Pan'er's father, the inspector of the general public, killed Beiren (should refer to Liao people) by opening the city gate to resist the decree, and was impeached by Xiao Qinyan, who was serving as Zuo Si Jian at the time.

Therefore, Pan'er's father committed the crime first, and Xiao Qinyan wrote the letter later. If there is no secret inside, it can be regarded as an enemy.

2. What is the nature of the mistake made by Pan'er's father?

All patrol officers are seven rank, in fact, they are equivalent to local sheriffs, patrolling and maintaining stability. Everyone always said that Xiao Gu's work was dangerous, but Pan'er didn't seem to be too worried about the nature of his work, because Pan'er's father was equivalent to the local imperial city's Sizun.

Pan'er and Gu Qianfan discussed and Pan’er has said that her father was the inspector (P2) of the Ningbian army. The Ningbian army was located in Li County, Hebei Province, and the border of Liao was not far to the north. The Dongguang County revealed in the ending song was also in Hebei. (P4), belongs to the Yongjing Army, Dongguang County is not within the jurisdiction of the Ningbian Army, I don't know if there is a story, or it is purely hope that the father's function is large enough to mobilize Yongjing.

Now the frontier army of Chaning, we can know that it was renamed Yongding Army (P3) in 1004. The name change can be adapted and used in the script, that is, the name will be changed after the main general steps down. And it is worth noting that in 1005, the "Tanyuan Alliance" came into effect. It can already be known that the background of the story is the period of Song Zhenzong. Song Zhenzong was in power in 997, and the unequal treaty of the "Tanyuan Alliance" was established. It happened a few years after he came to power, and he agreed to give Liao Bai 100,000 taels of silver and 200,000 taels of silk every year for peace.

So it can be assumed that the accident happened in the Zhao family at the beginning of 1005 (the twelfth lunar month/December 27th), when the peace treaty was just reached with the Liao Dynasty. It is estimated that Pan'er's father was an unconvinced main fighting faction. He killed the Liao people and was severely punished.

3. Is the investigation by Xiao Wei related to Zhao Paner?

After Xiao Gu rescued Xiao's father, Xiao Wei went to Xiao's father to talk about the Shaanxi Road incident (P5).

At the beginning of the Song Dynasty, fifteen roads were set up, and the roads can be understood as provinces. One of them was Shaanxi Road. During the Song Shenzong period, Shaanxi Road was divided into Yongxingjun Road (P7) and Qinfeng Road (P8). Anyway, it is the same as Hebei East Road. The distance is very far. Although it is a link between the previous and the next, it is believed that the investigation of Shaanxi Road is in the history of Pan'er, but there seems to be no direct connection at present.

On the other hand, the border of Shaanxi Road is Xixia. There have been several Xixia spies in the play. Once Gu Qianfan played the pipa with his spine, and the trial was a Xixia man who pretended to be a Liao native. He was Qi Mu's son-in-law, and was beaten by Xiao Gu to frame Qi Mu (P9). The other time was Yu Zhongquan, who used Xixia script to insert into Pan'er's account book, and Pan'er changed it to Liao script after he found out (it shows that Pan'er's family is related to the anti-Liao Dynasty).

These two things may indicate that either Xiao Wei/Xiao family colluded with Xixia, or the Xiao family was investigating who colluded with Xixia.

Well said. What I do not like is the sub-plot with Zhaodi’s mother , her being rude to Chen Lian and the badmouthing part of Yingzhang to Sanniang. Whilst the 3 women treat her well, she should have kept her mouth shut when it comes to the relationship between Pan’er & YZ. In addition, Qianfan’s part of trying to avoid facing Pan’er. I guess perhaps, his half-bother Xiao Wei must have already told him about their father’s feud with Pan’er’s Father. I understand from the Chinese fans on Weibo that both men are from different factions when the North Song Dynasty & the Liao dynasty were discussing peace treaty.

Pan’er may be his daughter with one one of his concubine. Like you I’ll be really upset if he wants her as his concubine.

My view on Chi Pan is that despite his appearance of being an idiot, rascal, he is actually a good person and will not sell people out. He is just upfront and tell Hao2 things how they are. If I am not mistake, he started to say the real Xiao surname when Qianfan responded to Pan’er that he does not know h him in ep16 and then he stopped without embarrassing Qianfan. Qianfan later told Pan’er that they know each other since childhood. That indicates that you can trust him note withstanding his appearance, just my opinion anyway. I don’t think Hao2 will turn bad at that drink preview even though she was jaleous of YZ. My guess is her conscience will prevail and she will help YZ.

True, we are yet to learn about her family background and the connection with Xiao Qianfan.

In ep26, Pan’er mentioned that her father used to be the inspector of the Ningbian military capital and in one of the episode where Qianfan asked her about an elderly from her family that he could ask for her hand and she told him of someone with a surname Yang. Does anyone know whether her father's profile may be referred to Yang Yanzhao, a general of the Yang family? General Yang defended Song's northern border against the Khitan-ruled Liao Dynasty, helping Song thwart Liao's repeated invasion attempts between 999 and 1004.

Good point, there will be a scene where Ouyang tries to lure Pan’er to his place and strangle her so looking forward to finding out what comes next.

I am now thinking about what may happen in the remaining of the episodes. Does anyone think like me that Qi Mu may have actually killed Pan’er’s dad and blamed it on Xiao Qiayan? Pan’er and Qianfan get back together. Zhang Hao2 may help Yinzhang from the sexual aggression and she gets back to Chi Pan? Sanning will get together with Du Chafeng and her son. Yinzhang will pursue her own career and will make a name for herself. Chen Lain will be with Ge Zhaodi. Any thoughts?

I have found the couple’s conversation after he told Pan’er about his good news with regards to his promotion/ transfer of title to his mother very deep and touching. It conveys a very deep understanding, support and love for each other.

She is no longer a child and she needs to experience things herself even if they are hurting her and about to get worse so that she realises what works best for her. Though she has developed some feelings for Qianfan but I do feel sorry for her for not finding out herself until she bumped into the scene where Qianfan & Pan’er hugged each other. I understand that she blames the sisters for keeping her in the dark but she also needs to grow out of the blame game and get over it. I hope she gets better in future episodes.

Fully agreed, I’m just watching the ep25 right now.

I have my reservations on the guy. There is something about him that I cannot put my finger on. I understand that Yinzhang will move in with him without telling the sisters know in ep26. There was a scene where he introduces Yinzhang to some old dirty man that touches her pipa and Yinzhang trying to move away from the dirty old man. I hope that he will not hurt Yinzhang. I feel bad for her.
