Agreed, it’s so entertaining. I kind of feel bad for Zuo who hates the grandma & Fu family but chooses to take her anger & revenge out of the wrong target.
I may be wrong but Zuo made a big fight against the grandma Fu in front of Madame Yu whose family is now higher in status than her family that killing her would have made her suspect no one as obvious. The other reason is with the rumours that FTY was intimate with her brother even elevated Zuo’s status & tarnish the Fu’s family name which is already in decline. Hence, she decided to kill her own granddaughter & made Zuo sign the agreement that her brother married a dead FTY which brings bad luck for a family.

The Fu grandma who hates Zuo ( being a widow in her family) & when she blackmailed grandma, she decided to kill her own granddaughter instead of letting FTY marry into the Zuo family. After FTY’s death was announced, grandma’s close maid made Zuo sign her release letter from the Fu family & signed an agreement that would give her some monies, cut ties with the Fu family & accepted that her brother married a dead FTY. She went to Ganlin to work. She took her anger & revenge out on FTY who is young, grandma’s favourite granddaughter & has all the rich guys that want to marry her. In comparison, she was promised by the grandma to have wealth should she remain widow, keep her chastity which are women’s virtues during the Ming’s dynasty. The Fu family was a prominent family in the region is in decline & in order for them to regain their position grandma tries everything including using Zuo’s chastity to get the emperor’s award with monies & they could build a new arch. Instead, Zuo only gets loneliness, hatred from the Fu family. I am not quite sure if the Fu gets to build a new arch thanks to Zuo or not.

Zuo’s husband died so normally, the Fu family should have signed a agreement to free her so that she could the fu family & remarry but the grandmother wanted power since their family is in decline so she promised to Zuo that she would have a share of compensation should she remain a widow & preserve her chastity in the Fu family. After a number of years, the fu family would be awarded by the emperor of this title, hence the Fu family could build another gate shown at the beginning of the drama. Fu grandma was just using Zuo as a pawn to keep their family’s name & prestige. Zuo was bitter of wasting 10 years of youth to remain widow.

Agree, what has FL done to him so that he has ruined her life like that? He is resentful of his mother controlling him & making decisions for him? Because of him, telling the Zuo guy to spread rumours about her that FL nearly died. The issue lies with the mum, Yu mother not FL.
I haven’t read the whole novel but read the last few chapters first. ML & FL have 3 sons & 1 daughter & happily married. Yu Jing Xiu & Yake have not had a happy marriage with no kids so Jing Xiu has many concubines & try for children. Jing Xiu was accused of having an affair with a married woman which led to the death of her husband. He fell out with his parents & moved out of their house to be with that so called married woman. ML has worked on a corruption case which involved the Yu family (father) & the murder case of that married woman. Jing Xiu’s father was accused of corruption ( horses sale), stripped of his title, sent in exile but died along his way. Jing Xiu was also convicted of murder (married woman’s husband) & would have been executed had ML not negotiated for him to be sent in exile. Someone asked ML why did he choose to help him instead of letting him being executed. ML replied that by letting him live so he could feel the pain of his destitution (I.e my view is that he wants Jing Xiu to feel the pain of his bad deeds (the pain he caused to his wife FL). Yake is just useless, not really helpful to the Yu family. She became jealous & bitter of Jing Xiu concubines. The Yu family lost their wealth, prestiges & just became commoners. I am currently reading the beginning of the novel & it’s a bit different from the drama.
