I think she tried manipulating ML and Prince Duan but failed because they understood her intentions, had mothers previously so! That is why she forced ML to have a child, whose mother she killed, so that the child since day 1 can be in her control! Hence she retains powers!

So our theory of the cases being interlinked is true. Because the second case closed with the death of the guy who ran away, and FL mistakenly killed him; but there were people who orchestrated that. Next case also is related to the palace! So there are a group of people responsible for all of these and even FL's parents! I highly doubt the imperial consort though!
In such dramas, the climax has to be really important, hopefully not rushed, because they have to close the loose ends of all the cases, and incorporate it together! I hope they are able to do that!
