Thank you for bringing those posts about WOF to Reddit; I only left the last one here in my reviews (after accidentally erasing the first one lol). Kwanto and Xiang83 always have great insights into the cultural and philosophical aspects of dramas, beside the stories and the productions. I’m a regular reader of their posts!

By the way, I also noticed the changes in audiences and users in recent years. Before, you could even find more accurate information about other types of dramas beyond idol romances... By the way, I’m part of the older generation too lol.

But it feels more of the evolution of the docu-series format (with huge huge budget) for the 21th century than a proper drama. I think if you adjust your expectations to this, you´ll enjoy it because of the oustanding production and scale of it all.

Poetically relentless, bleak, melancholic, and utterly hopeless. Very atmospheric series, much needed to carry you into that world full of deeply broken characters, who try to fit in but cannot, who don’t know how to communicate. Its deliberately slow pace and the cinema-style vibe in the execution are perfect for that. The relationship between Li Fei and Zhuang Shu as children is so beautiful and powerfully told that it cuts like a sharp blade, and its eloquence lingers way beyond the drama’s ending.

I've completely fallen in love with this series. I only have the last episode left to watch, and I'm not sure I want to watch it, just because I don't want to leave it behind.

I´m writing this because the synopsis here is missleading. The drama is way more profound than it might seems, and the forestal issue isn´t the center but the excuse - still interesting. Since around ep 10, the real theme of the series has become clear. What started as a heartwarming slide of life about the hardships of forest workers in the Northeast has revealed itself as a fierce critic towards Chinese parenthood, at least for a generation, at the backdrop of the changes of forest policies that impacted many. Great writing.

I had put it on hold at ep 15 because I was utterly disappointed with the turns the story had taken, mostly since ep 13, but seeing that it’s continued that way, I guess I’m dropping it without further hesitation or futile hopes. I agree with your take on Ou Hao doing a great job with his character. What a pity indeed.

On EP 15 and since EP 14 some little things started to bother me, .Some situations feels quite basic for a spy drama, especially those involved with the young agents...the couple next door, the coincidences, the trip. And not to mention the unnecessary creepy guy who contacted Jin Lin.

If you're willing to wait for a while, probably Youku will release it completely as for now it has done it until EP 8 for free (that's a lot coming from this platform).

Does he have an important role? I´m planning to wath this drama and I wonder how´s so far

Not a wuxia but a wuxia-ish Republican-era road trip with bold Tarantino vibes, Fearless Blood. Also written and directed by Xu Bing. 🤌

With wuxia adaptations, you have plenty of hard-dye fans of the novels, who focus more on if the drama or movie is an almost accurate adaptation word for word, situation for situation, character for character, and who mostly are never satisfyed with the on screen changes/final result without understanding that 1)screen is another medium and so, changes are needed, and 2) adaptations aren´t literal transcriptions, but recreation subjected to interpretations and changes due to the different medium and the creative liberty of the author making this new project. Personally, as long as they respect the essence and core themes of the source, I´m flexible - it´s art after all. Case on point: I´m ok with Dune but the last Wuddering Heights movie has nothing to do with the novel, except for the names of the characters lol.
Another thing is that this isn´t a classic wuxia, and lot of people were expecting that, plus Xu Bing has a very particular style that isn´t always liked by part of the audience.
Nowadays, majority of those who vote in internet are young - both in China and in this type of forums -, and Remnants of Gold definitely isn´t a drama or a story that would indulge the audiences with fast pace, polished look-and-feel, editing trends, simple narratives, idealistic romances or plain characters (Xu Bing as a screenwriter-director either).
Douban was quite an accurate guide until around 2023 imo. Then, it was flouded with fans and new generations of audiences - so, now it´s a bit more difficult to distinguish quality and criterias.

Excellent drama recreating all that period. Very engaging storytelling,, not heavy or stiff at all despite the topics it tackles, and it does an excellent job keeping all the battles, names and strategies of that period and setting straight. Never in my wildest dreams had I thought this would be so entertaining I'm hitting play the second each episode ends.

Production is outstanding in every aspect — filmed entirely on location (stunning landscapes) and with hundreds of extras, the best I've seen so far in my cdrama-watching experience. Understandable, given who Xi Zhongxun was, and who one of his son is today. Acting, everything is very solid.

The ending OST since EP 13 is also one of the most beautiful and touching songs, lyrics included, that I've encountered in cDramaland (and there's a lot to compete with).

If you like these kinds of historical productions, it's a must watch without a doubt.

Oh I'm glad I interpreted Gu Long spirit thoroughly,. I haven't read any of his work but searched about his main traits, and certainly I could see them reflected in the screen. Knowing Xu Bing, I think his style matches Gu Long's approach too, and he did a wonderful work. I'm also glad of having interpreted fights as GL intended, but still I think for an audiovisual project, it could've been better (not in terms of crazy coreographies, but in the final result. Some were great, such as in EP 7, EP 10, EP 13, EP 2, but others were way below Xu Bing standard in general. Not well filmed more than a choreography issue or characters limitations.
