I love your review and the topics you bring to the analysis. I believe this kind of fantasy dramas, when done well and with this type of meaningful content, are awesome to help us discuss greater subjects - sometimes better than the grounded and realistic ones. It applies also for the phylosophycal aspects it has,.too.
This drama feels like Japanese Taiga drama. Seems big budget but preachy with predictable plot because the message…
How come historical facts and a war were 20 million Chinese people - mostly civilians - died is preachy? How do you expect a nation who suffered so much from an invasion deal with it? Praising the enemy and the war crimes it committed? Ridiculous.
Amazing first episode! Directing, cinematography, soundtrack, acting, pacing, and how the story is set up — and this is just the beginning. I think I’ll rewatch this first episode; it seems to be a series to savor every moment.
I´m trying The Devil Between us at the moment, after dropping all your first four somewhere along the first episode.…
You can try Born to Be The one. Excellent and one of the best production from recent years overall from every genre; the story is told in a linear way.

I also dropped it within the first episode - very bad storytelling and average director, but this is his trademark. The Truth Within is the most close to what you want. The story is in the present all through out, don´t get mislead asumming there will be a trope competition between the two main leads. It won´t.
Is this finally my 2026 crime drama? I've dropped so many boring ones already..1. The Guilty2. Her Blaze3. Vanished…
I´m trying The Devil Between us at the moment, after dropping all your first four somewhere along the first episode. We´ll see how it goes. I even tried The Hidden Truth but too many out of place things for a seasoned watcher - but it seems quite good for newer in the genre. So far, the only one that I ended was The Truth Within, because it has a distinctive cinematography, it was stilized, tense, acting on point, used flashbacks at its minimun - just when needed and they were justified -. and mostly and more importante: coherent, logic and believable - don´t know how to stress wnough these three words. Not a groundbreaking thriller, just a good one to enjoy.
For me this is better than The Punishment so far. I couldn’t get past the first episode of it.
The punishment was another average show, but I was missing a large scale cop thriller. I watched it for a while because of this but Idropped it around 20 eps, and I reached that episode already bored. Pace, production and storytelling was better than in this one, imo. Anyway, I definetely don't like this director, and I'll continue waiting for my next drama with QJJ
Same team from The Punishment: director, actors and you can tell in the way of filming, camera and even soundtrack and how it is used. Outdated style for me, quite generic overall - perhaps those that haven't seen so many thrillers and are in the right mood will enjoy it. I'm not conviced and not the tone/vibe I was looking for. It's a shame because I was hoping for a Qin JunJie drama. Will see with Abyss, that has a different team.
Agree! It´s incredible this drama isn´t talk much, while Meet Yourself or To the Wonder always pop up. I´ve…
Try City of Sunlight (or The City of Sunlight), set in Lhasa, Tibet. I liked it too; and you have Fragance of the Pomegranates, set in Xinjiang but I dropped this one.
I haven't laughed so much watching a drama in a while. The fight between the son and father, then more laughter…
Agree! It´s incredible this drama isn´t talk much, while Meet Yourself or To the Wonder always pop up. I´ve made a post in the sub DramaBeyondIdols in Reddit, because I found the real tidbits of the Paris Fashion week and the Chinese Brand that worked with the Miao artisans. I owe it a review.
Hi, I was planning on watching WOF and I came across you review/comment about the said series, may I ask a question?…
Hi! The first part about ART AND CULTURE is spoiler free, and I recommend reading it before starting the drama becasue you´ll miss a lot of cultural references that will make it more meaninful. There´re images from different part of the show but they aren´t specify in context so they don´t reveal nothing related to the plot - if you don´´t mind this, go ahead and read it. Here´s the link just in case:
The second part - DAOISM - has a bit more spoilers but not so much. If you´re mid point the drama (ep 23-24) and felt a bit lost, you can read it byt this point as all what is mentioned / shown has already passed . The third part about Buddhism - the one published here - definetely has lot of spoilers because it´s quite impossible to tackle without doing so. This one is to read after, without a doubt.
Hope I answered your doubts, and also you´ll enjoy the drama! It´s a rare production among idols ones because of these issues.
Can writers just write a crime/thriller drama that is happening in the present instead of this skipping time back…
Glad I dropped the drama early on on the first ep, I didn´t like how the director presented the story. I would recommend Born to Be Alive . Not exactly a classical suspense thriller until the second part -general topic it´s about environmental and development conflicts, told in an action and suspenful the first part, and it only uses 1 flashback scene, well done and perfectly set during the story. The rest is told in normal time stamp, first part is in the past, second part in the present. One of the best dramas from the first part of this 2026.
Thank you! You can see images of the real city transformation and people here (almost the same review but with…
Oh I image then all that what you see in the screen have even more meaning! I was in China last year, and planning to come back soon - I hope lol. You're welcome to join the sub, as it's specially for dramas that aren't talked much, like these one. I'm currently watching Like a Flowing River and loving it too - I know, I was late to the party 🤣
Great write up! Am enjoying the show. Ml character is so smart 😍😍
Thank you! You can see images of the real city transformation and people here (almost the same review but with images): https://www.reddit.com/r/CDramasBeyondIdols/s/iyvM8zsxcg. It's really nice to find people who watch this show!🥰 Few people seem to be interested.
