On The Birthday Mystery Jan 25, 2024
This drama is amazing. You can't predict where it is going you have to stick with it until the last episode. The characters are also fresh and not stereotyped. It also has one of the cutest father-daughter relationships I have seen in dramas. I'm glad I watched it when all the subs have been released, or else the waiting for the new episodes would've killed me.

Title Sanctuary Spoiler
Good series with good production style although the first 2 episodes was kind of slow in terms of the pacing.…
1. The protagonist is unlike-able for almost all the time throughout the series. He was simply rude, lack empathy, no manners to almost everyone, kind of delinquent teenager. His character development only happened at episode 7 out of 8...lol can you imagine?!

I think should the writer used the cliche or a stereotype delinquent character, it could be a lot more easier for viewers to sympathize with him.

2. The female reporter character felt like cheap tool to neutralize the unlike-able protagonist. Her strange attraction to him was out of nowhere and unrelatable.

3. Other side characters in the dohyo felt like potatoes. Their names were confusing too, Enya, Enga, Enkaku and few others that almost look similar with big body and topknot.

4. The series was late to pick up its momentum as the real interesting part only came at around episode 6. Judging from the ending, there's possibility that the series initially could have more episodes but was cut short to give way for Season 2. Some characters like Ryuki and Male Scoop Reporter have no proper closure as well.

Good series with good production style although the first 2 episodes was kind of slow in terms of the pacing. I liked how it's truth to Japanese style instead of trying to be western since it's Netflix. It was interesting to see the culture, tradition, and ritual associated with sumo, getting featured in the series.

However my complain would be (spoiler below)

Title Perfect Days
Pure slice of life movie. Not many dialogues but the story was told by the action. The pace is slow but the director knows how to make it not boring by injecting some dynamics in the otherwise mundane life of the protagonist.
On Shrieking in the Rain Jan 18, 2024
Pretty entertaining with simple plot. 80's settings, 80's fashions, 80's hairstyle and interestingly shot in vivid colors. The writing is cynical but it includes perspectives from all people involved in the Japan film industry. Be careful not to watch this with family because it has unexpectedly long nude scenes....lol
On News Sokuho wa Nagareta Jan 18, 2024
If you want something different, this is it! It's interesting mystery with investigation but not scary and dark. It's also good in exploring journalism topic. The downside is that everything is shot around the same place throughout the drama and the production is not for those who prefer anything visually sparkling like in Kdrama.

It didn't hit me until the scene on the bus that it was that kind of relationship. They were just friends to me,…
It is forced because the writer tried to over romanticized being gay VS the alleged homophobic parent. Like this tragedy would not happened if the son is liking a girl. It is forced because child abuse/negligence could happen to all kids not only to queer people.

"Unreasonable plot" because the movie told us the father is a workaholic person that rarely be at home. Remember when Minato's mother visited the house, Yori seemed like he used to doing stuff on his own. Do you think this workaholic father that neglect his son care for what his son wrote in diary?

Remember the problem didn't happen if there was no bullying. So what happened to the bully? Are they free from punishment?

My question still hold true. How could the father be 100% sure the son is gay? How old is the awakening age for the kids? Wouldn't it "normal" for homophobic people to feel safe that your son is being friend with boys, than a girl?

Once again we are talking about 11 years old here. And FYI the puberty between girls and boys are not around the same age. Boys usually came later....some will be very late. Yori with soft voice is definitely haven't come of age yet...but for Minato case, it's more logical and the hints are all reasonable. I would say while it is clear Minato is attracted to same gender, we can't say the same for Yori.

If the plot happened to let say teenage kids around 16 or 17....then it is more "reasonable" I guess!!
On Toki wo Kakeru Bando Jan 13, 2024
This is an alright drama. It's youthful and visually vibrant. However as the other comments have stated, the "Toki wo Kakeru" was just the marketing gimmick and did not play so much role on the plot. Sadly the music part wasn't that in-depth either and more towards the superficial side, but at least you will get to see the girls play their instruments unlike "Tadashii Rock Band no Tsukuri Kata" that was released around the same time as this one. I think, should this drama focus more on the romance part, it will give a different impact.

I liked the original although I watched it few days before this one. I was expecting a more quirkier version considering…
LoL at how they use Kanji Stroke as the mechanism of the day lost. Mikurube and Kadenokoji Surnames are surely PIA to write in kanji. It is funny (theoretically) but I guess the joke is still hard to relate for a non Japanese. Even Chinese would only use single Kanji in their surnames and at most 3 kanji's for the full name.
I liked the original although I watched it few days before this one. I was expecting a more quirkier version considering Kudo Kankuro does the script, but he chose to make it mild and gave more effort in making the mystery different than original. I guess this J-version is still good and interesting to watch, but it missed the charm of the original.

Warning! Spoiler below contains major spoiler. Please don't open if you haven't watched.

I really liked the way they made us know about the timeline when showing different perspectives. Movie starts…
4) "Sometimes happens to me" could be referring to "erection" Minato got when their faces were close to each other. But I personally see Yori as generally referring to "erection" that young boys have at "random" time...not necessarily when they are "aroused".

I think the boys are out after the storm, which mean when the storm happened it was still during the midday not late afternoon.
EDIT: Now I remember when mom and teacher look inside the train the boys are already not there...but the sky is still dark. I guess this was just an "artistic" representation instead of a "realistic" one.

That's what I see it too but that's the most unreasonable plot I would say. How does the father know his son is gay? Come on we are talking about 5th grader kid. Even for straight people these are things you don't talk with parents around that age....for example a boy won't casually tell his parents/adult he has a crush for certain girl in class.

On Minato's blaming the teacher, it is obvious the writer want to convey that this poor kid is too afraid his sexual orientation got exposed (because straight people are monsters according to this movie...lol) so he "randomly" blame the teacher...not like he want to find culprit of whatever...because as we know the problem isn't solved at the end...I mean the teacher lose his job and the actual bully got free unnoticed.

I totally agree with you. It could have been a masterpiece without having to go into such relationship. What a waste!

I see this trend of "forcing" LGBTQ+ writing all around Japanese dramas in the recent 3-5 years even for plot that's not related to such theme, and now this movie.

I suspect there are some kind of requirement for Japanese writer that's not known to public. It is the same with female empowerment (read feminism) and all those "harassment" awareness...lol. If you watch Jdrama you would notice this trend.

Some writers make it a comedy, some make it more subtly, but of course this one was too into the face that it almost ruin it for me.
This is a good drama that tried not be the typical sport drama that usually tackles students problem in each episode. This one is not formulaic I would say although it still contains the familiar trope and cliche.

However I wish the first 2 or 3 episode was not that hectic (super fast pace) with everyone, narrator, announcer at stadium, commentators all were talking almost right after another. LoL

It felt like I can't breath watching while reading the sub at the same time. I guess people who are native Japanese won't have this problem. Rest of episodes after that were better and more relaxing though. Perhaps it needed some "dynamic" instead of a constant high pace.

On the plot-side, it lacked the characters development and introduction for the students. Imagine all of sudden a character named, "Ban" appeared out of nowhere....haha

But overall it was still entertaining and made me impatient for the next episode thanks to its "super fast pace" without unnecessary filler scenes. The last 2 episodes was also worth the watch and wait (for the sub).

Title My Missing Valentine Spoiler
This is a nice movie with smart plot that will make you think after finishing it. I wish the writing could be…
There are 4 type of people:
1. The slow person (Ah Tai) will gain additional day
2. The "ahead of everything" person (Hsiao Chi) will lose a day
3. Normal person
4. Monks

When the freeze is over, normal people will actually continue from where they stop, which is the early morning of the Valentine's day. In other words normal people will experience that day without a clue. For them Valentine's day was not missing.

However, Hsiao Chi will lose a day and therefore she would not wake up until the following day, which is the 2nd day after she was returned to her room by Ah Tai. She is the only one who missed the Valentine.

Ah Tai gained two Valentine's days.

Monks and Hsiao Chi father were not affected by the losing and gaining of days.

This is a nice movie with smart plot that will make you think after finishing it. I wish the writing could be more neat in terms of the small details, but overall I didn't see any major plotholes in this. The humor is very Kudo Kankuro's no wonder they made a Remake.

Mystery behind the missing Valentine's day in spoiler below
Compact version of Hideyoshi story. This is a good option if you don't have time to watch longer dramas and don't want anything too short like an SP. It is currently available on Youtube with English sub. Just key in the search keyword, Taikoki.

Downside: This drama excludes some of the characters and did not cover Hideyoshi's life after he became Taiko Denka.
