But as far as the novel goes it is all good.

Well...most of the historical Japanese dramas produced by Japanese quite truthful to the history I would say...of course with some fictional elements.

But don't get me wrong. This one is based on Novel so it doesn't have to be historically correct/accurate in the first place...but promoting it as based on true historical event is really not so right either. I'm talking about their marketing team....as well as the marketing for the James Clavell's novel.

You may want to watch it for the sake of entertainment but I guess this is too loose to the history. I haven't started watching this yet, but their special Youtube video about backstory was too far from the actual history especially the so called "peace" during Hideyoshi time. Not to mention Ishida Mitsunari isn't really on the same league as Tokugawa Ieyasu to make these 2 person a rival.

Hi, I think this person @Nauriya has a valid point. According to the criteria to put a drama/movie in MDL database it must be produced/co-produced by the countries listed in MDL, which is seemed like not met by this series at first glance. However that's actually not the case as Sanada's name was listed as one of the producers.

It's nothing to do with western perspective or asian prespective. We have many westernized Asian dramas/movies already....not to mention Asian works adapted from western books or literature.

I guess they wanted this reporter to be the love interest that could sway Haru's decision sooner or later. During the last scene it shows that Haru's still keep an eye on her so most probably they want to keep her until S2...and even make a plot twist like the reporter is also descendant of Ninja for example...lol

Yes I agree they should have made some brief history background during the beginning. I guess that part has been overlooked....or maybe the director, Dave Boyle wanted to be more "Japanese" by putting everything as subtle as possible...haha

In case you're wondering:
The Hojo clan is the samurai clan during Sengoku period that resided the Odawara Castle (the one we got to see a lot in the series). Fuma clan is the ninja that have worked for this samurai family until its abolishment at the end of 16th century. It is a common knowledge to Japanese and Japan-history fans so that's why it wasn't explained. During the school trip of the youngest kid the rivalry between Fuma and Hattori was explained briefly.

About the reporter:
Remember all her research have been burned by Haru and when she went to the other press company her bag containing proves was swapped? She also being chased by Fuma because she knows a lot. I don't know what did you expect from this reporter as it was clear from the beginning she was the side character.

This is quite an entertaining series although it's not super amazing. I think the problem is the expectation people have with the term NINJA, that they would want something "action packed". Please know that the other meaning of "Shinobi no Ie" is Shinobi Family. The "Ie" can also mean family and hence the family drama instead of NINJA-ACTION drama.

The music was fitting IMO although it was all English songs. It gave the cozy family vibe which I believe what Dave Boyle wanted to convey in the series. I find the pacing of episodes directed by him to be okay despite not in the quicker sense we often see in Jdrama or Asian drama in general. Loved the 2 ninjas parallel run with long camera shot earlier in the series. It was clearly an homage to old ninja dramas/movies.

Strangely though, the 2 episodes directed by the Japanese director felt 10 times slower and too western-wanabe (hint: traffic lights)...LoL

Finally, this is a ninja story. You don't have to think logic and just enjoy the show! Yeah and the plot was straight forward too that it didn't leave anything that can't be explained or interpreted unless you're overthinking it (insert MEME of woman face with math formulae).

Interesting movie featuring beautiful ryokan and jinja around Kibune, Kyoto. Highly recommended!

Quite a good movie but it's the usual Japanese uneventful slice of life so it might not for everyone. Acting performance was top notch. Interpreting the on screen clues/hints is what makes this movie worth to watch.

This is surprisingly addictive. The episodic stories are just okay-ish but the partnering between Kuramae and Amano is the highlight of the drama. This is the right way how you do "generation gap" IMO. Yeah and the theme song fits the drama-tone nicely too....LoL

On the negative side, the drama featured lots of pop culture reference so it could be a bit overwhelming though.

Teenagers at 16 might not ready for a serious relationship/married life but they are "matured enough" sexually...if you know what i mean. For the sake of discussion let's pretend they are at the same age. Would that be a problem if they have sex? And while not watching this drama I don't think this is about that. It looks more platonic to me and most probably more into pure love.

Fetish-izing the age gap might not be the right term for this kind of theme...but more of fetish-izing "mature" partner if that makes sense. That's why the term like MILF exist in the first place. So the POV is always from the younger one towards the older, not the other way round.

LoL a remake?

It's based on western book anyways so you may expect a bit of westernized historical Japan.

However if you love Japanese old culture, this might be a good opportunity to see things in higher definition. I mean the costumes, the armor, the castle, etc, is pretty amazing (judging from trailers) which we rarely get to see from the locally produced Japan dramas.

I was not planning to watch this at first but the last trailer looks more convincing and less westernized than the few earlier trailers they released....so might as well watch this.

Of course I was talking about high school and so those western works. Making the "crush" become reality is what the movies/dramas are all about. It's a "fiction world" after all.

Your concern about adult/child relationship is a totally different thing. You said you already googled the age of consent in Japan. But people go to high school at 16, therefore there's no such thing as what you're afraid of.

Usually people find teacher/student relationship creepy is not because of adult/child but more of educator/student. Educator should be professional and not to mix their personal feeling in the job.

I don't know where are you from, but having a crush with your teacher is quite common everywhere in the world especially for teenagers coming out of age. Well to be fair more common to boys. They are many western works revolves around female teacher and male students if you want to do more research about it.

This is entertaining in terms of its production value as well as the acting performance. It also has less episodes therefore it is a focused drama without any unnecessary fillers. However the mystery part needed a lot more works to make it felt neat and made sense. There were too many disconnected dots that never been wrapped nicely at the end.
