If you're interested in J-historical you can try watching Nobunaga Concerto...it's short 11 episodes drama with a movie...and coincidentally, the timeline is close to Kirin ga Kuru...with similar characters involvement...but Nobunaga Concerto is very loose on historical fact and more on comedy

The poster and still images are amazing....and it looks like the producer wanted to experiment with fabric and colors...which is something new in Japan period drama...but they overdone it for sure...colors look good on posters (because it's re-touched in photoshop) but not so attractive and weird on videos...because they did not use any filters and furthermore they increased the saturation to the max...
Anyway, from the first 3 episodes I have watched...this drama was not bad in terms of the plot...we get to know the earlier days of Akechi and his less featured in drama hometown...the writing was also good so far and the interior design was amazing which tried to reflect the style of that era...
how is this for someone who dislikes long eps and has never tried Historical jdramas before?
If you want to start J-historical then Taiga Drama is not recommended...unless you are really into learning the history or want to see the interpretation of what has been written in history...in other words Taiga drama is strictly history-related...so the plot is basically known which could be cross checked with let say wikipedia (easiest way for us who don't have Japanese history book)...haha
Nice production featuring beautiful location (both building and scenery)...the pace was slow but just right for the plot....great acting...Horikita Maki looked beautiful in period costume...highly recommended if you could find better sub
If you want to try Japanese historical but not sure where to start...then this drama is for you. Easy to follow plot (less politic), lovable characters, a bit funny, nice edo-period settings (hair and clothing)...Highly recommended!
Good and short drama....nothing weird about the age gap as this is what could be happening in real life too....once you're adult the age doesn't matter anymore
Sakaguchi Kentaro is a huge miscast in this drama. He is 10 years younger than Shibasaki Kou. I guess they need…
Haha totally agree with Ikemen for rating....and yes Hashimoto kind of off too...there's big difference in adulthood between 20's and 30's that would unconsciously shown in people personality in normal case...of course there are exceptions though
if I had to nitpick which flaw I didn't like, the ending was a bit rushed, didn't like Manami getting along with…
Yeah totally agree with you...the last episode was bad...i was hoping for back to reality kind of ending, where Nozomi finally accept the fact that only a handful of lucky people in this world able to achieve their dreams...the rest of us would just settle down with something else and learn how to love it....Manami won the contest was really cheap writing...LoL

Ohh I forgot to clarify something....that is regardless of how unhappy I was with this drama, I have no problem with anyone who loves it....but I don't want to give false hope to anyone who might want to watch especially those who are new to Jdrama thinking that this is the best Japanese could offer...therefore I left that slightly negative comment to bring down the expectation a bit...I personally rated this 7.5/10

Actually there are many non-dark + heartwarming family jdramas out there...but I accept your point on the drama was dealing with not the lightest issues...in fact I have no problem with that as that was the reason why I started watching....
But the portrayal of people surrounding our main characters is my problem...haha...I guess I wanted more realistic side characters/plots or like I said at least more eccentric main characters...but it's just me
Side characters that feel real (and thus made up for the drama) to me are Manato's mother, the bento shop owner and the uncle...the 3 brothers are the worst in my opinion...I'm 50/50 with Momoko's friend though...

I was not only talking about the main plot, but look at the people surrounding the main characters...like the three younger brothers who were too obedient to be true, the understanding uncle who happened to be the parole officer of the ML, the supportive boss who fell in love with the female manager too easily although he was portrayed as the hot guy (who logically should have 1 or 2 girls chasing on him)...it was okay but less impactful in the sense that it felt like everything was arranged too nicely by fate for the plot and subplots...I think it could have been different if the main characters were made eccentric or something...just my opinion
I still like the old Rika better no matter how good Ishibashi's acting is...I think her portrayal of Rika was…
The alleged rape incident: This is very tricky because there was no clear statement from Satomi that she had been raped....only the English subtitle was suggesting on that...by using the word "forced", "hurt" etc....
So my take is, the scene was never meant for a rape incident regardless of how it's perceived...there was a force-act at the beginning but I presume Satomi gave in halfway because she loves Mikami anyway...
She cried because Mikami used her as a place for his "tension reliever" after got dumped by another woman...she hurt mentally instead of her physical...
This explains the "like-nothing-had-happened" kind of attitude by everyone in the drama...even Kanchi could calmly talked with Mikami although he had said earlier that he would never forgive Mikami if he's ever hurt Satomi...LoL
Personally I think this particular scene was totally unnecessary as we already know how jerk this Mikami guy in the first place...it looks like TLS 2020 wanted to look cool by generously include many skinship and bed scenes in the whole drama....If I want bed scene I would just watch JAV...why bother watching drama...LMAO
finally have time to watch this....my thought about Rika and Mikami under respective spoilers bellow
I still like the old Rika better no matter how good Ishibashi's acting is...I think her portrayal of Rika was a bit off...or could be a miscast?
from what I see the modern Rika is too stiff, not charming (less "moe"), unapproachable, scary and moody/gloomy all the time...but then all of sudden she became unrealistically cheerful...and Ishibashi seemed like had to go 200% to achieve that cheerfulness...this makes inconsistent personality of the character (more like bipolar disorder??)...
if they want to re-invent the character, they could have just go with the moody+carefree Rika instead of mixing it with the child-like personality of the old version...it was just too unnatural to me
