Last episode 180 degrees changed from cynical into interpretation kind of writing (felt a bit meh but I can see where it was coming from)...overall watchable (as long as you're adult), but there are better "bad guy" dramas out there if that's what you're looking for
Finally watched Sanada Taiheiki to see if it's really better than Sanadamaru, so that I could make a fair comparison.
TBH, both have their good and bad points. Neither one is better than the other.
For some reason having watched Sanada Taiheiki makes me appreciate Sanadamaru even more. The writing in Sanadamaru is more modern and suits millennials taste better, while Sanada Taiheiki felt a bit 80-ish with all the flings with women kind of plot. Some part of writing in Taiheiki felt empty and strangely it's filled out in Sanadamaru especially on the development of Yukimura's young character. I imagine Sanadamaru was trying to improve what was missing in the former.
Historical fact wise, both did a decent job but for sure, some fictional side plots/characters were added. While Sanada Taiheikei used a lot of ninja characters, Sandamaru utilized Yukimura's childhood friend Kiri played by Nagasawa to spice the story up. As long as it didn't change the history outcome, it is fair enough IMO.
For me, I personally in favor of Sandamaru for it's wholesomeness in including many events missed out by Taiheiki, for example the killing of Rikyu, Hidetsugu and his concubines, the "graffiti" incident plus the growing influence of Christian, among others. The development for Sekigahara Battle was better in Sandamaru and the wise but easily misunderstood character of Mitsunari was also well portrayed, which is missed out big time in Taiheiki.
So what's the strong point of Sanada Taiheiki? 1. It's Human Drama! But in 80's way. 2. Extend further after the fall of Osaka castle and has more focus on Nobuyuki character 3. More ninja in action 4. Siege of Osaka was better in Taiheiki
As a person who did not read the manga...I find this series was not funny at all...not so clean in the direction and it can be obviously seen on how the actors (especially Takenaka and Inamori) struggled during the earlier episodes...there are several better yet funny yakuza dramas out there than this one The music however was perfect....haha
A bit disappointed as the drama missed out the "music" part...you won't see them perform at all which IMO dragged this down to the same level as any other clickbait kind of youtube videos out there.... Imagine rock band that's not performing any songs...LoL The comedy and it's slice of life stories are not bad though...but I want rock songs in my rock drama
Yeay after years of waiting... It's just that it felt everything had been compressed...too many plots for too little airtime...LoL And surprisingly Kaku Kento is well behave in this..I have a phobia with his over-acting but thankfully he did great as support role this time around...
One of the solid dramas with similar vibe to HBO or History channels in terms of production value. It is also did not include many Japanese pop cultural references, therefore it is easy to be watched by everyone.
Thanks for the article! This is one of dramas I watched on TV but did not download to watch it again and therefore don't list it here on MDL....I totally agree with you that Shomuni was kind of non-conservative in that era alongside GTO and the gang...as a male viewer I did not find the girl power theme bothering me because they have realistic points on that matter, unlike some new-age female empowerment dramas we see nowadays.
This is okay with a bit touch of human drama however the episodic cases were so-so. If you binge watch this, you will get tired after couple of episodes. That's why other medical dramas tend to have exaggerated lead characters to compensate for the already boring hospital workplace theme.
9/10
