WXY can do authoritative very well, especially on horseback and as a general. If HMH follows this director's instructions, he should do just as well or better in his own style for this role as a general for the first time. I say this because I could never finish watching a HMH drama before FoF, due to his acting lacking depth and nuance and range for me. GJM enabled HMH to expand significantly by pushing him to the limits, although I hear GJM's treatment of HMH was problematic and unfair in several ways. This director will be able to make the cast emote without issues, also because of what he wants in the little details.
For me, directors and screenwriters are essential to a drama or film. For emoting without all the PDA in C-dramas these days, the 1992 movie 新龙门客栈 starring Lin Ching-hsia, Tony Leung Ka-fai and Maggie Cheung was directed by Raymond Lee and produced+written by Tsui Hark who has the final say. Director Gao Yijun also uses little details pertaining to hands, fingers or items being exchanged/held/fought over or discarded, zooming in on subtle changes for facial expressions, etc.
