Parallel World from the Future

I understand that many Koreans are very concerned about the treatment of their history and perceived cultural…
It IS an alternate reality. ;) They just can't accept it.

The main cause of this problem is that Korea doesn't have official censorship laws. Not that i support it but…
They used to require SSN in everything they do online. That law was repealed, I think almost 5 years ago. Since then there is an uncontrollable "anonymous keyboard warriors" in their Interwebs.

That law was repealed because it's privacy invasive. Imagine this, when your account in WebZen's games is banned, your accounts in NCsoft games will be automatically flagged. They also have access as to why you were banned and decide for themselves what to do with it (usually they'll keep a watch over you if your ban reason in the other company was a serious one).

That is a privacy issue and I myself is against such.

However, it appears that the decades of suppression of freedom online created a situation wherein when the law was repealed far too many people enjoyed being anonymous. Think of it as a kid who with very strict parents. What do they do when they get some form of freedom? They go wild.

There were moves to reinstate the SSN requirement because they were able to connect "anonymous keyboard warriors" with the increase in suicide rates , however these were either ignored or blocked.

It is a very sensitive issue. It is not easy to balance. If you create a new department to handle check & balances for this law, that also means hiring more people. More people means more potential corruption. Let's face it, corruption is everywhere. The more institutions a government have, the more channels of corruption and complexity in investigation there will be. So it really is hard.

Besides, at this point in time when they all felt the freedom to post online and say whatever they want, it is too late to bring back the SSN requirement. They'll just end up not using their local online services, and instead start establishing off-shore "online forums" where they can say anything they want. In other words, it is unstoppable today.

Too bad this drama is canceled,I think this drama is so good..why we can just enjoy and watch it and dont think…
They can acquire the license for the script. However, they'll have to rename it and pick a non-Korean production team and talents. They will also need to avoid leaking any information that they bought the script or the license for it because once that gets out, the zealot mob will attack them and it will hurt Netflix in Korea.

From a business standpoint, it is not worth it, especially if the people already turned into a zealot mob, which means psychologically they no longer have any rationality and will make everything an big issue. Netflix is still a business.

Can they write a similar story? Sure.

In fact, I doubt they'll push the filming for the next season of Kingdom. They'll probably decide to postpone it indefinitely and wait until the issue about Koreans being anti-"Alternate History" genre dies down.
Replying to shahesta Mar 26, 2021
Is there any hope that it won't be cancelled?
Nope. They can never film in Korea because even the local governments and companies are afraid of the zealot mob.

Any Koreans would be afraid to join the production team too.

That's what a "cancel culture" does, they dig up the past to destroy their latest targets.

You said it yourself "criticism and complaints about its advertisement poster". It was not about the fact that its an alternate history.

> not all countries share the same sentiments when it comes to their history

Tell that to the Jews who were systematically killed by Nazi Germany. Tell that to the Koreans and Filipinos who were raped by solders of Imperial Japan.

Does the novel presents Hitler as a good person, all loving and that he was right in what he did? Basically is…
The mere fact that Nazi Germany won in this alternate history is more than enough to to anger the Jews who were the number victims under Nazi Germany. And considering how very sensitive they are about anything Nazi Germany, they didn't bother with "The Man in the High Castle" … if they did, the Amazon adaptation wouldn't even reach 4 seasons.

I wonder what will JYP Entertainment do with their partnership with Tencent. They can also be targeted if the Korean government can not even control their "anonymous keyboard warriors".

That's the problem. The "Chinese" issue is understandable and can be rectified, which was what Mr. Queen, The King: Eternal Monarch, and other past shows did.

But them whining about the use of historical figures in a way far too different from historical facts is illogical because that is called "Alternate History" and they produced a lot of dramas with alternative history in the past.

The writers pitched this story, the powers-that-be approved it, and the sponsors and whoever else gave them a budget because they all assumed that their own people are matured thinking individuals. I can't even begin to imagine how disappointed they all are right now that their assumption about their own countrymen is false.

Do not compare western works with this drama. Free speech, free media, and views towards historical figures work…
So you are saying that alternate history works wherein Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan won World War II is "different" and that the Jews who were systematically killed by a genocidal maniac are not "patriotic" nor are the Koreans (and Filipinos for that matter) who were raped by Japanese soldiers?

If your logic is correct, then I guess the Jews are not patriotic because they didn't whine about works where Nazi Germany won. I guess Koreans (and Filipinos) who were raped by the Japanese soldiers were fine with it when they did not react to works wherein Imperial Japan won.
On Joseon Exorcist Mar 25, 2021
Here's another "sensitive" example of Alternate History but no one whined about it.

Kingsley Amis set his novel, The Alteration (1976), in the 20th century, but major events in the Reformation did not take place, and Protestantism is limited to the breakaway Republic of New England. Martin Luther was reconciled to the Roman Catholic Church and later became Pope Germanian I.
On Joseon Exorcist Mar 25, 2021
Here's another great example of "Alternate History".

--> Philip K. Dick's novel, The Man in the High Castle (1962), is an alternate history in which Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan won World War II.

Did people whine about it? It even inspired an Amazon series, it had 4 seasons!

What is "Alternate History"?

The Collins English Dictionary defines alternative history as "a genre of fiction in which the author speculates on how the course of history might have been altered if a particular historical event had had a different outcome."
On Joseon Exorcist Mar 25, 2021
Here's the thing, they incorrectly labeled this series as "Historical Fiction" hence they're all going crazy about it. The correct genre for this show is "Alternate History".

Quoting: Alternate history, alternative history, or simply althist, sometimes abbreviated as AH, is a genre of speculative fiction consisting of stories in which one or more historical events occur differently. These stories usually contain "what if" scenarios at crucial points in history and present outcomes other than those in the historical record. The stories are conjectural but are sometimes based on fact. Alternate history has been seen as a subgenre of literary fiction, science fiction, or historical fiction; alternate history works may use tropes from any or all of these genres. Another term occasionally used for the genre is "allohistory".

> If this was work of fiction, they could've used fake kings. Why use real name, when it's clearly not related to your plot?

Familiar with "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"? No one cried foul because they used the "greatest President of the United States of America" and turned him into a Vampire Hunter.

Title Mouse Spoiler
Episode 7
Yep, like I said last week, the hammer hit on his dead definitely awakened something in him -- his psychopath and/or genius side. This was already observed before in real life and they're using it in this show.

Secondly, that was an interesting twist, the Doctor died without clarifying anything if he was indeed a psychopath and/or genius.

Third, it appears that the real "son" is Ba Reum. In a way it makes sense, he is the titular character of the show and he is even in the promotional poster. Ba Reum is the mouse, not the cat as I previously assumed -- which makes sense why he killed the cat and the bird, both animals hunt mice.

I guess where they are going with this is to prove that we can never really determine who will become a psychopath and/or a genius because there are other factors that plays into how a person develops and grow. A good way to speak out against what's happening that the media isn't covering is to make a statement through fiction. ;)
