Yes. April-May will be exciting for us, since itβs the DVD/ Blu-ray release and Yusei and Riku fanmeeting. We…
Yeees, I'm especially thrilled about the online event in May, I miss seeing Riku and Yusei in the same frame! πππ And of course, I look forward to whatever news they might announce there, but definitely hoping for an announcement of a second season. I mean, I have followed a lot of jdramas for many years but even the big ones (like Ossan's Love which became a social phenomenon in JP) didn't have something like an online event after the series has aired so I'd like to believe MBS still have many plans for UtsuKare. π
On another note, it's amazing that it's still currently #2 in Best Sellers in TV Dramas in Amazon JP despite finishing its run 3 months ago and despite having a lot of winter dramas having just recently ended. π I think that's when you know a drama has been very impactful and unforgettable that a lot of people are still discovering it and liking it even after it aired.... aside from seeing some people who claim to hate/dislike it but still feel the need to check its MDL page and read/respond to new comments. π€£ I mean, checking this page regularly is normal for people who love the drama and are passionate about it since it's fun to discuss with people who like the same thing but I'm amazed that some people who did not like the drama still spend their precious time and energy here. π₯
I thoroughly enjoyed this series nearly more than any other drama iβve seen except the fact it was very short…
Saw your review and I'd just like to let you know that I, too, had to make an account in Viki few months ago just so I can write a review for UtsuKare because I simply cannot keep quiet and move on with my life after watching and being amazed by this drama, I had to express how much I fell in love with it. π (Meanwhile, if I dislike a drama, I easily forget about its existence and would never spend my energy talking about it anywhere lol)
Your feelings towards the drama are understandable but to answer your question about "How come there's a lot of positive reviews?" and "But seriously, why does people like this?", I guess it's because a lot of people didn't drop the drama after 2 episodes (like me!), that's why we managed to see the character development (had further insights as to why the characters behaved the way they did) and understood what message the story was trying to convey (by looking beyond the surface) after watching the entirety of the drama.
But yeah, if a viewer feels uncomfortable watching the drama, then the better option is to drop it and move on to the next one.
I watched season 1 (without subs lol) because of Kiriyama Renn and now excited to watch the new season because of Hagiwara Riku! <3 It's a regret that it doesn't seem like other characters from the previous season will return (except for the main 3 characters) so I wouldn't see Renn and Riku act together but nevertheless, looking forward to this!
I haven't watched a lot of Kdramas but my sister does and there are times that I get to peek and see bullying…
Yeah, I understand if it was uncomfortable to some but it wasn't really something so bad for some people to have such strong opinion against it. And yeah, I guess some people don't even know what Stockholm Syndrome is and just mention it to sound smart haha, Hira was already smitten even before he knew what kind of person Kiyoi is lol.
What a sweet story!, I especially loved episode 5. It was also very beautifully filmed and the actors did a great…
I haven't watched a lot of Kdramas but my sister does and there are times that I get to peek and see bullying scenes such as the main character being locked inside a restroom cubicle, being doused with dirty water, bullies hitting them until they give their wallet or something so I kinda get what you mean with your second statement. That's why like what the others have said recently, this drama is not really "dark". It has a serious/mature tone and not that fluffy unlike other recent BLs but definitely not "dark".
Not approving any kind of bullying but I think compared to bullying in other dramas, here in UtsuKare, Hira is mostly "being taken advantage of" since he doesn't show resistance. He mostly runs errands for them (while also buying his own stuff) and being teased so sometimes when I read other people's reviews I'm surprised by how they manage to make it seem like this drama has the worst bullying scenes out there and some even describe it as "Stockholm Syndrome". So there are times when I'm like, did we watch the same show??? O_o
I can understand if some people don't like this drama since people have different tastes and how we perceive and understand the story varies but saying that the "acting sucks" is a bit.... π Makes me wonder what would they say about dramas where the acting *actually* sucks lol
I thought ending theme is also about hira feelings because of the lyrics ?
I think in some versions (in Viki at least, based on what I've observed) the lyrics for the songs (especially for "Follow") are mistranslated that's why some people misunderstood it at first and thought it's Hira's POV. Yusei and Riku did mention in a video that OP is Hira's POV and ED is Kiyoi's (https://www.instagram.com/reel/CWiRDyqjLsg/). I think the most accurate translation of the song I saw is here: https://twitter.com/rinnenotsubasa/status/1467732350565900289
Yeeeah, their commentary video on episode 1 is only available for blu-ray version so I was really forced to order…
No problem! Yes, since it's a visual book it's full of unreleased photos, some photos are huge (like they take up a whole page), while some small photos are compiled in a page, mostly behind the scene photos. Then 22/85 pages mostly have texts (interviews + bonus short story.)
And for those interested to purchase the DVD/BD but don't know how to yet, you may check the guide I did here:

Viki - 9.4/10
Douban (CN) - 9/10
Filmarks (JP) - 4.2/5
...I think having 7.9/10 in MDL says more about this site than the drama itself. π€·

Anyway, here's the link to the visual book~!

I pre-ordered it on January 2 and it arrived to me on Jan 26, 2 days after the release date so Amazon JP is very reliable (but I'm just in Southeast Asia so I guess that's why it arrived earlier than expected)~!
