There's a theory saying that to practise hellfire, it is not necessary to be emotionless. What it takes is a strong enough will and determination. Maybe his strong will to protect XLH and his tribe will also allow him to regain his powers.

I noticed they are VERY particular about the clothing choices in each scene. Not only does the clothing match with the sets, they also go along with the moods of the characters as you have said. It plays into the psychology of the audience - for example the light brown one he usually wears during scenes when he is feeling affectionate towards XLH, and the darker ones are reserved for his more badass moments.
I know we probably will never know what DFQC's true form is but I'm still curious and I'm trying to come up with some theory based on his costumes and stuff. He doesn't seem to be a dragon cuz SQ is a dragon and his ride. He must be pretty strong to have a dragon as a pet tho!
I'm thinking his true form might be a plant, a tree specifically. He has several costumes that have tree patterns on them, and his head pieces also resemble wilted tree branches. His heart is also represented by a tree, and his name is "Qing Cang" which means greenery (usually used to describe trees in Chinese). He used some of his primordial energy to create the Bone Orchid bracelet for XLH, which is woven by branches. WAIT... XLH calls him Da Mu Tou (big wooden head) too!!! I know this is because Da Mo Tou (big demon) couldn't pass the censorship, but still XD It was funny thinking about it.
