I really love how Madame Xia and Hua Zhi's relationship has been portrayed

Madame Xia and Concubine/Madame Qi have the same husband, that's why in the earlier episodes she was considered "one of Madame Xia's people"

He will become relevant again after he does his exams or when stuff goes bad for the Shen family

Having Yanxi close to him means that YX won't be close to his father, creating internal conflict i.e. less likely to try and steal the throne from him.

And the Emperor doesn't really trust YX. When YX talks to Prince Xian he explains that the Emperor told the guy he killed in ep 1/2? (can't remember), to question about succession. So that Yanxi will do something to make himself in-able to inherit the throne (scarring his face).
