I have attempted to watch this twice already and I cannot get pass the fl’s voice, and the coffin-ready makeup.…
understandable, I think everyone has the same reaction when they first watch her dramas. turns out that's actually esther's real voice and has become her trademark over the years and people love her because of it.
I really love the depth of character of the fl, her character growth arc is well written and makes a lot of sense considering the cards she's dealt. I also like that it takes time for us to warm up to her. Its my first time watching a drama with LHC, and although I was unsure about her acting in the first episode, I'm quite impressed by her range. Also she's soooo gorgeous!
i liked it but it's nothing groundbreaking. I just wish the writers would've let the joseon love story bloom, it broke my heart how she didn't reciprocate his feelings. Like, its ok if she dated his past self as well, they're literally the same person. Also the ending doesn't make sense to me. It would have been a thousand time better if she ended up with his joseon self.
side note, I really love cutie patootie mls and this drama did it for me.
Why is it so difficult for you guys to see FL's side? "Oh she ruined his future", but from her perspective it's…
Honestly, if most viewers are turned off by a character in the drama, it screams that there's a problem. I've scrolled well into the comments here, and absolutely, nobody is slamming her for turning down a marriage or fighting her own battles. Actually, I'd bet most of us are here for that classic enemies-to-lovers storyline. But the real letdown? It's how they've written the female lead. She's pretty much just a one-dimensional character who seems to get a kick out of nasty pranks to get her way, rather than being a complex character. All we know about her is that she’s obsessed with a celeb, hates pretty much everything else, and lies non-stop to her friends AND family. Like, what's there to even like about her? Can the writers at least tell us more about her? And why can't we call out a character fail when we see it? Sure, the set looks amazing, the trope's a hit, and the male lead's is interesting, but her character? Just not cutting it. Enjoy yourself if you're satisfied, but let us have our space to vent.
The set is gorgeous, beautiful scenery as well, but if only the fl wasn't so annoying. Her antics aren't even funny or cute, they're selfish and cruel at times. Usually, in enemies to lovers drams the feud is cute, brings the leads closer and builds chemistry, but here its a drag more than anything. I really can't get behind her character, she's so insufferable.
Also, it seems like many people are defending the character by saying her mischief (which I'd personally label as cruelty) is just part of who she is. But I have to ask: what more is there to her character? Beyond this one-dimensional characteristic, we know almost nothing. Her entire character is built around a pranking (crime) , a fixation on a particular boy, and a habit of lying to everyone, including her family, without any sense of remorse (while writing this, I can't help but wonder if she might be a psychopath. Her ease in lying and committing acts without empathy seems to point in that direction, but that's just my take). This could be one of the worst written lead characters I have ever seen.
As I' ve said in other comments I don' t want to be the final recipient of the products of such a cruel and inhuman…
I salute you fo this, boycotting the korean entertainment machine should be talked about. Nepotism, abuse, slave contracts, harsh beauty standards, cancel culture, fan mobs etc. this industry has slowly grown to rival hollywood in terms of unchecked toxicity and influence.
this sounds batshit insane when you're from a place where weed is legal and people mind their business. they drove the man to end his life over something that is none of their business to begin with. let's take a moment to mourn but also think about the laws, prejudices, culture that lead to this happening.
I really enjoyed this drama, yet it would have been more enjoyable with age-appropriate pairings. While historical accuracy is needed in historical dramas, when its a comedy feels out of place. A storyline featuring a handsome, more age-appropriate crown prince would have been a better addition. Also, the choice to pair a 29 yr old scholar/farmer with the 17 yr old is odd, because to the modern eye it makes him deeply unlikable, whereas the rest of the characters are so likable.
On a side note, while I recognize some viewers' moral concerns, I don't see this as a deep ethical issue and don’t think the writer had any ill intent to corrupt the minds of the watchers. It's important to depict historical facts from time to time, even uncomfortable ones, as they are part of our collective past. Hiding history isn't the answer; we need to remember our history to avoid repeating our mistakes. This writing decision shouldn’t be a reason to tank the rating.
I would say my critique centers on the writer's decision to mix a gross historical accuracy in the context of comedy. In this context, it doesn’t fit with the show's overall tone. As modern viewers, it's challenging for us to appreciate characters portrayed as good people in their time but who would be considered villains by today's standards.
As a watcher of Kdrama and Cdrama I can see this being a factor. There are definitely some sageuks that get low…
You’re onto something. I think your observation might stem from the possibility that a lot of historical cdrama watchers are attracted to wuxia aspect of the historical cdramas. Because they definitely showed up for alchemy of souls.
though I have not watched this drama, i definitely agree with you
the number of times I watched a perfectly decent historical kdrama only to realize the rating is below 8 🫤 Yes kdrama watchers are more picky with rating but there’s a pattern
I have a theory that historical kdramas are always badly rated because kdrama watchers simply actually don’t like the historical genre. Since it’s rare and not the norm, kdrama watchers tend to watch less of them, and if they do they’re probably forcing it down their throats.
Whereas historical cdramas of the same budget and calibre are rated higher because it is a widely popular genre, hence the viewers are used to them and are over the fact that it is set 1000 years ago. If you’re a cdrama watcher and fan of chinese actors, you’re forced to consume a lot of historicals. In the end you’re bound to end up enjoying the genre.
So please, if this is you ask yourself; is the drama bad or do I actually hate historicals.
