To my knowledge this is the first movie from Japan with m/m romance and dancing (and I can only think of 1 other movie from any other country focused on dance and that one did not end with the guys together iirc) so I gave it a major rating bump. I can absolutely see people rating it lower for the reasons you mentioned.

I re-watched ep 1 and you're right, he asks him where he's been almost right away (updated my review) but Mr. dum dum (because I'm sure he did some noble idiot trope in the past that caused way more hurt than being honest/seeking communication) is still on my sh*t list

Alan is an old man with dementia. Win did exist and they were romantic partners, but Win died of leukemia. Alex is Win and Alan's son. In the final episode, Alan learns that he has dementia and everything related to Win from previous episodes was in his imagination. Alan dies of natural causes at the end and we see him and Win reunited in the afterlife. Ophat and Pete are boyfriends. Alex and Nin are not together though Alex wanted them to be.

Hajime, Kai and Anna are shown living happily together. It's not clear that this is a legal arrangement or a mutual agreement, but I feel confident they will remain a happy family.

I rarely blame actors. The writers, directors and editors make a huge difference with the final product. I don't know what they were going for but they didn't succeed in either the romance or supernatural department.

I have read most of both novels and yes the second one has military elements that would require a large budget. I believe it's the first book (but that part hasn't been adapted) where a character does something that I consider unforgivable...
