Just started episode 1 and Iโm already in love with Ha Joonโs character. And has anyone talked about his English…
Oooooooh ๐๐ Hello friend ๐ Good to see you here and welcome to the world of weekenders I guess? It is my fourth one so I'm not the newbie to family dramas anymore that I once was but I have to come to love them as it's own genre of kdrama (or hate them when they are bad like with its predecessor ๐คฎ) Because the most important thing you need to do is seeing them separate from regular kdrama. Weekenders are a lot more soapy with all the tropes you find in a soap opera, designated villains, dysfunctional families, scheming and all. The second most important thing you need is having patience with its story and especially its characters. They all develop more gradually, as does the relationships. Yes, Ural bc in a weekender you have several lovelines and not just the one focusing on the leads, which is more called the main couple in these shows. Each important char gets its limelight, and probs also a romance and a good writer balances all these substories well that we see (a bit of) progress in each week.
Those lovelines generally consist of the main couple (here hajoon/uee or rather taeho/Hyoshim) middle couple (her student brother/a female student moving into the dorm) maknae couple aka the youngest (FL's youngest brother and Taeho's cousin/Taemin's sister) and an older couple (here possibly Taemin/newscaster lady and/or Hyoshim's oldest brother and wife rebuilding their marriage) So lotta story to be had heh. If done well we see chars changing from their worst self and lowest point they start with into much better versions of themselves, and family relations and them getting closer again is a big deal here too. The stories center around two to three families (ML's and FL's first and foremost) so this is why you rarely see friends or coworkers and their stories being explored unless they happen to become a LI for some relevant character from the fams. Hmm what else? Don't take things and scenes too seriously maybe as it is often overplayed for dramatics and tension. Just roll with it or press the ffw button lol.
What I have come to love about weekenders is that in no other shows you see such gradual development and exploration of characters and also that you accompany the main couple from first meeting to getting to know each other to falling in love and then to marriage which is not possible in this gradual form in regular kdrama. Plus lots of cute scenes with the couples in general (unless it is done badly like in its predecessor the real has come of course) but yeah long story short: welcome. If you have further questions lemme know ๐
Itโs utterly endearing that Shin Yu is so receptive to Hong Joโs kisses. Heโs just always ready and willing…
He is so down bad for her. Not just kisses but he is also a cuddly puppy always seeking her closeness and affection too. And he is charmed by her cute (drunken) antics instead of annoyed, playing along even (the ๐ scene) He is so eager to spend time with her each day, keeps checking in with HJ thru texts and calls constantly when he could never be bothered to do the same with NY even once ๐คฃ It is so damn adorable how open he is with his love towards her. (Plus they have been dating for a week or three at most and he already wants to take her to dinner with his parents.) Miss 'he doesn't like to hold hands and be touched and never calls me' simply can't relate here lol.
I think he never planned to use his knowledge of her cheating against NY but then gurl kept forcing his hand so that's what she got in the end. A dinner served ice-cold and lot of ego bruising bc Shinyu knows exactly to hit her where it did hurt her most.
Speaking of which... Hongjo definitely does that to him next week alas. What he has feared all along comes true and she is leaving the poor puppers all alone, when clearly the answer for his question if she can live without seeing him is a resounding no for him in regards of her. ๐ญ
Ohh dear Shin yu:)) why why why :) If he realised his gf was cheating when he saw the photos, why did he agree…
i am pretty sure he held out the two months or so, for his father's sake, so that the mayor has no reason to go against him and construction with his father' s firm can proceed smoothly. Thus SY tried to be the good son and the insurance his father expected him to be. But then feelings got in the way with them growing bigger so did his wish to live his own life instead of filial piety or something like that. SY could no longer pretend to be what he is not, and broke free from the suffocating environment. Bloody hand or not, he is now way more happy than he ever was.
Also he probably never planned to use these photos against NY and let her know he knows of her cheating, but then she forced her hand bc guuurl continued to play with fire and then was all surprised pikachu face that she got buuuuurned in the most crispy way ๐
It does give me serious FNOS war flashbacks tho :D (but maybe closer to See You In My 19th Life, curse and all)
that octopus scene was the cutest, omg. I would not be surprised if that scene was adlibbed or at least the whole thousand octopus thing was. So very natural and adorable. They have impeccable and effortless chemistry with each other and sell being a couple really really well.
But yeah it gives me serious fnos feels in the way that i haven't loved a drama so much in a while or rather since then (with exception of May I Help You, maybe) <3
Seems to me more found her wounded like this and tried to pull out and did pull out the knife. This is why he cried like that right after bc he was too late.
I suspect that his father was involved in killing her as he most likely planned to marry his son off to the princess or something. (Just like his modern version tried with SY to NY.) And they wanted to run away so it is possible his father got to know of these plans and killed her to stop him, and Mujun was too late to save her. Ergo he de-facto killed her in his POV. The curse is active toward his father then with her death and thus also toward him as direct descendant. Mujin sees it as fitting punishment for his failure, probably.
At least that is my wild theory that i am sticking to for now ๐
his laughter/amusement at that was the cutest (felt more like Rowoon than SY tbh xD) He is so charmed/whipped…
Oh I remember ๐ MIHY was a tearjerker but one with one of the most mature and best communicating healthy kdrama couples I have ever seen. Zero noble idiocy or other nonsense once they were together, instead they faced everything together as couples should. Still happens way too rarely in kdrama unfortunately.
I'm hoping the preview is misleading and that it is cleared up quickly at least ๐

yeeeeah unfortunately it seems to go the usual road bc kdrama writers are still stuck in 2014 it seems with their mandatory break up nonsense. This is why i appreciate May I Help You and From Now On Showtime (ML had a bout of noble idiocy but it was solved in 7 min tops with FL yelling at him for being a noble idiot instead to solve probs together and i loved that a lot. The writer understood me and my frustration with it ๐) so much ngl. One of the rare cases where it does not happen.
I understand the frustration but perhaps you've missed the part where FL is not used to relying on anyone else.…
Yeeees this is why their argument in front of the garden nursery and SY telling her to let him know of her whereabouts and such is so important and good for their relationship.
It takes time to unlearn old habits you had for a decade or longer even. In her case not doing everything on her own anymore (and SY still does it too as he never relied on NY, ever) And she is not used yet to having someone in her corner that worries about her and wants to share her burden.
I want to seize you. Andโฆโฆ. She felt asleep ๐๐๐๐
his laughter/amusement at that was the cutest (felt more like Rowoon than SY tbh xD) He is so charmed/whipped by her and the happiest we have ever seen him awww.
after the office scene SY was invited to the dinner by the mayor, where his father still tried to pawn him off and let the wedding happen in spite of everything. So SY was like "I handle it" which they mistook as agreement but actually led to the whole NY dinner being served ice-cold tonight scene. And since NY ran crying to her daddy and SY's mom later on called him to invite him and HJ over for dinner, it is pretty much official now.

Quite similar in themes and with ML being a magician, has 100% more (adorable) ghosts tho ๐
