I don't know if it's because I recently finished the terrible mess that was Apple of my Eye so my standards are…
*highfive* feel the same after the trainwreck that was The Real Has Come. You notice that it is a weekender veteran writer onboard here in the way all storylines is all well set up for exploration/expansion already instead of dragging everything on for weeks on end until setting storylines up in the middle somewhere or worse, throw in a new major storyline at the end that is then going nowhere. Like in hindsight it is so damn obvious that the TRHC writer is not only fukkin misogynistic but also that he never ever wrote a weekender and booooi did it show.
That is done so much better here, with varying characters and relationships that intertwine but are not only fully depended on the leads.
There's nothing incest-y about it. The male lead's biological siblings are the female lead's biological siblings.
Hehe that is a not so minor detail to mention is all ππ
Amusing tho how her siblings gonna be not only his siblings too but also his inlaws I guess? That fam tree is wild but nothing new in dailies and weekenders tho π
It is hard to get into a show when almost every character is despicable. I hope it picks up because most of these…
That is how family dramas always start. It is not like your typical 16 eps kdrama. Pace and character setup is different, slower but gradual. Seeing them become better people is part of the long journey. So you need to have patience with it.
So it is cute daily, but i am not terribly invested (yet) It is more something i watch on the side atm. I do like the humor in it, its whole self-awareness of kdrama tropes (the ML slow mo entrance only to have him slip and nearly fall and the whole wayward scarf pick up to meet a woman framing except that he just bend over to clean his shoes and went about his day without picking it up haha.) , the energy of the FL and her bond with her father and siblings. So nice to see some non-toxicity in family relations bc dailies/weekenders usually start out badly here.
My head hurts trying to figure out the ML and FL's fam relations tho. I mean in general, not with each other due to her siblings also being the biological kids of his mom but she has a different mom but same dad as they, while ML has a different dad but the same mom like FL's siblings? Oof, the overcomplicated length they go at to make sure ML isn't related to FL but still having their families' ties strong to each other, lmao.
Ok did she ever have the baby tho or is it just a long term food baby or what or maybe like a tumor or
yeah her super skinny ass was shown pregnant for 0,3 seconds only tho. If you blinked you missed it. After her baby girl was born it became a battle ball of pissing contest between two men only. Though Haneul was admittedly the cutest and best character in this trainwreck of a show and all she did was smiling/crying, sleeping and pooping π
Maybe check out Live Your Own Life instead. it is going slow, slower than usual due to asian games stealing the airing spots like a squirrel nuts for winter, but it is a good, much more modern introductory phase than TRHC ever had.
Lemme harp on on romance for another bit, bc everyone else is talking about the suspects anyway lol:
A lot of people say there is none between the leads but thing is, this ain't your typical romance drama and all of it has been more a byproduct than actually the main focus of the story. Yeol's development of feelings and the subtility of all is completely in line with his character He is a protector, job-wise and especially about (the few) people he cares about. He is just showing that care through actions not words and YB being the opposite here is prone to misunderstanding his actions and what little words there are as being a jerk. Then again, i don't think she is in the right situation and mindset atm to being able to stop and notice what it really means with all that is happening. Which leaves her being unfair to him when he actually has an innate need to keep and know her safe from harm and not like she thinks bc of her abilities or bc she is an important witness only, by far. What she sees as him being a jerk is him actually showing "look i care for you, a lot even." but alas this man has zero social skills so his request to date him instead comes out half an insult and half a love confession haha.
Thing is tho, cheesy display of affections would not suit his characters. Instead it was a gradual name upgrade from "pervert" to "bong" to bongbong, then her full name with honorifics, and eventually her name without heh, and his gradual softening gaze upon her, and wondering where she is, if she is safe and then his NEED to see and know her safe. And him being more and more annoyed with her spending time with SW wasn't at all limited to Yeol having him as suspect on his radar, nope. Jealousy definitely played a role here too with him gunning so hard for SW, lol
However, I feel with a lesser actor than with LMK this subtility would have fallen completely flat. But even now you have to stop and really look/listen to notice, so lets hope we see YB doing so at least in the last episode and after some time to heal. (i think we are going to see a small timejump with her missing him after his return to Seoul or something like that)
With the very questionable viewing experience (mildly put) of The Real Has Come Isadly) still fresh in mind, i gotta say i appreciate Live Your Own Live's narrative framing so far. It is still in the introductory set up phase, but it also clearly shows that all Hyoshim has to endure due to her is not right how she is treated and she is the one the viewer should feel sympathy for, not the family members. It already judges filial piety as unreasonable instead of expected, at least in this amount HS does it. It clearly shows the differences between Hyoshim and her useless brothers, what she does and what they lack and yet are held in a greater esteem by her mother who cannot even spare a good word for her. And the drama frames it as injustice as it should instead of something she should naturally do nor complain about, bc of family and elders (like TRHC did countless times) Plus, in every scene with her fam, it is shown how HS slowly but surely is reaching the boiling and breaking point. I really like Uee's subtle expressions and teary eyes emphasizes that.
Another big difference is the narrative framing of FL in general. She has agency, she is shown working, stand up for herself (sadly with her family it is only temporary at best for now) and i think the best example was Taeho being a sexist "I don't train with feeeeemaaaaaales" reddit asshole in eps 3, talking down to her and completely dismissing her. Literally, with deciding the PT lesson is over. But instead to cower and apologize for offending him by existing how our dear Yeondoo would have done πππ , she is calling him the hell out on all of this not much later. Completely. Including reminding him to not use such sexist remarks and address her politely in the future, then letting him standing there as she turned away and continued her run without waiting for an answer. Bravo. I am aware after TRHC my bar is... in the basement basically, but I am so glad to see it was addressed, almost instantly. And this because the narrative allowed her to, framed it as wrong and wrongdoing of Taeho instead of making HS take his (gendered) insult and disrespect passively bc she ain't permitted to react to it accordingly.
And this alone has LYOL already elevated above TRHC ngl (Also the way the families/chars are connected is already set up soooo much better too but that is a topic for another day, lol)
yeah, I was also thinking, how tf are we gonna get romance between the leads after this??? and I heard FL was…
I think it will be a last episode kind of deal, either after a small timejump or not. I think Yeol has just figured out that he has feelings for Yebun so he is, as always, steps ahead of her who is still unable to see past his zero people skills, and curt demeanor to see the true meaning of it all. Which with all that has happened lately i don't even blame her, mind. But she also has a deep connection with him, beyond that mooning crush that SW is/was. Another reason why i am not sad he is gone now, bc daaaamn it was getting embarrassing how much of a teenager she behaved around him, changed voice and all. She is way more real and herself with Yeol, tho. However understandable it is she is lashing out in her grief, it is also unfair toward Yeol. It was HER who did not stay put after all.
(Also i think a small part why Yeol kept suspecting SW was also subconscious jealousy, but pssst. )
Ding dong the witch... SML is dead. π Finally i don't have to sit thru Yebon/Seowoo scenes anymore bc they are annoying tf out me since ages, sorry not sorry. But the writer had fun this episode... killed of not one but two main suspects and was like "have fun figuring that one out" π Has to be the shaman now, for reasons explained below by someone else. Bc he always says "i don't remember etc" so it may be actual blackout with another person(ality) taking over or something. Idk. The cow is also still my prime suspect π
The world's stupidest FL award definitely goes to Yebun. Dear fucking gaaaawd woman. She has no common sense nor any sense of self-preservation. Oooooh the killer is still around and after me, but lets go wander about at night bc my crush (another suspect at the time) called me out to the far off workshop tehehehe. And several other scenes of that nature too in this and the last episode alone. Jesus Christ, no wonder Yeol put her into the holding cell, you need to protect her from herself and her complete naivety. So damn frustrating.
We should rename the drama into "Yang Yeol being 24/7 worried for Bong Yebon who constantly makes the worlds' dumbest, self-endangering decisions', but i guess that would be too much of a mouthful. Someone give the man a hug, he is trying his best to keep (t)his woman safe while she does her best to endanger herself just as much.
And for anyone saying there is no romance here, boooooi did you actually notice how Yangyeol LOOKS at Yebun since idk, eps 6 or so? His soft gaze at her could fill whole romance novels. Lee Minki is the MVP here with his ability to recite whole books of love poetry with his eyes alone, daaaaamn. And his need to protect and worry about YB has only exponentially increased to his feelings with every episode, all kept subtle and kinda under the lid due to more pressing matters such as serial killings. But his kove language is so very "act of service", down pat and speaks volume too.
But of course the sadistic writer taketh away whatever minuscule progress there was romance-wise as soon it was achieved (the way i screamed at Yeol's "You can date me." The man has zero people skills so this is as good as a confession gets. And his "both" after the captain asked if he is worried about YB as a detective or man..... aaaaaaahhhhh) so it is back to suffering and YB making yet another unfair accusations toward Yeol as well as irrational decisions that will endanger her. Wheeeeeeeee π
Everyone please give the evil-psycho aunt a round of applause for the level of commitment to that screeching π
At least there is no ambiguity to her character that makes anyone go ooooh this poor person was just sad and alone hence why they did that. I can respect the commitment to full on disney villain π
Am I the only one who thinks Uee x the cousin is a cute pairing lmao I like that more than Uee x Hajoon pairing…
Might want to add 'character' behind hajoon's name lest people mistake the actor for being sexist. I really dislike his whole 'I dOnT tRAin WiTH fEmAlEs redpill bs so much lmao and I'm hoping Hyoshim makes him continue eating those words. He will especially regret them once he caught feelings but hey part of the fun to see chars squirm as they think back on what insufferable assholes they had been prior. Kinda relatable as it happens to rl people too in varying degrees. At least if they possess self awareness that is, which is not a given lmao. But yeah Taemin is much nicer to HS and not just because he is harboring a huge crush on her I hope. Also that Taeho becomes much less a brat soon lol
