Once more since i keep seeing the complaint about "pure" popping up:

The subber made the mistake to translate it too literally from korean with as little words and as confusing as possible, at that. (the literal translation of the sentence is: "This is (not) neat/clean") But what is meant here is that the leads have made an agreement to start with a clean slate in regards the relationship, and clean up the messy circumstances they are in (ML in particular) before starting something new together. But in order to get to that that, it needs time. Thus they have agreed upon not "to look elsewhere/flirt with anyone during that waiting period and idk, to translate that in the subs with "You have to stay pure" is very... unfortunate to say the least because of course english sub viewers are going to conflate that with purity in the, idk, sexual sense? Which is not the point made here by the chars and dialogue at all. It is all in the context of "bringing something in order and "clean up" and trusting the other to do so/stay true to their words given... not purity in its actual sense, lol. I feel the much more accurate word to use here would have been "proper" or "to behave" as it summarizes their intent a lot better than this purity nonsense that carries a way too icky connotation.

So yikes at those subs in that episode. Feels like poorly done in several places, not just this instance. Especially when comparing it to and or reading the korean subs and knowing what it actually said, lol. I think this happens when the person subbing does so without regarding the different connotations of words in a language and thus uses them either too literally or interchangably which baaaaaad. It is like as if someone tells me to translate english subs into korean, which lol i could never, but even if it would due to missing/sufficient expertise and knowledge in the language constantly miss the finer details too. So here is hoping the subs are better next time. But it is not the first time i notice this with this show tbh.

I am not even watching this as of yet and not sure I will, but I am quite curious whether it is the character…
as korean learner i have gripes with the translation/subs of this eps in particular too, especially the part people complain about that the leads tell each other "to stay pure" which is really just a bad translation in context actually. As tho they made it into a competition to use as little words and be as confusing as possible with them, lmao.

What is meant here is that the leads have made an agreement to start with a clean slate in regards the relationship, and clean up the messy circumstances they are in (ML in particular) before starting something new together. But in order to get to that that, it needs time. Thus they have agreed upon not "to look elsewhere/flirt with anyone during that waiting period and idk, to translate that with "You have to stay pure" is very... unfortunate to say the least because of course english viewers are going to conflate that with purity in the, idk, sexual sense? So yikes at the subs there.

Title Live Your Own Life Spoiler
Since this weekender/family drama has just started and many people are dipping their toes into the genre of weekenders…
Weekenders tell a story, or rather many stories that involve families. Like all other dramas they have a beginning and an end- in this they are distinctly different from a never-ending soap opera, but are much longer than a standard Kdrama.

If length is not the issue why the difficulty with a weekender? I think that it begins with expectations- to the confusion caused by the fact that a weekender appears to simply be another K-drama- raising the obvious questions as to why is it so long and why does it have so many characters? In fact, the length and larger cast both come from the fact that this story has to be longer because it will be telling many stories all at once- but in a more believable time frame- because there is actually time and space for people to grow and change.

Length is part of the point of the weekender. We get to watch people change and grow. Those changes take time but the beauty of this is that when we see it happen over time it leads to poignant moments that are not nearly as possible with a shorter drama and which may not even happen with the two lead characters. To enjoy a weekender start by knowing that the length is a feature, not a bug. Adjust your expectations to that idea and enjoy the longer journey.

Now I will surprise you with an unexpected suggestion- be prepared to use the fast forward button, but use it judiciously. Weekenders have several plotlines so if there is a storyline that you just don’t get into- fast forward. But, be careful of doing that simply because you find a character awful. At the beginning of FATHER IS STRANGE the character Kim Yoo-joo is simply awful- but she becomes a truly beautiful person over the course of the show and that story is one of the best plotlines in one of the greatest weekenders of all. You might want to check on that character from time to time. That said, fast forward used well can save a show for you.

Lest you end up hating all weekenders, and therefore missing out on a very good thing, my final suggestion to you is to know when to drop one. Knowing when is a matter of understanding the structure of a weekender. Start with the idea that because the drama will involve many characters and several stories the first four episodes are introduction- the stage is simply being set for the play that follows. It is in the next four episodes that the stories truly begin to unfold and you get a glimpse of the kind of action that you are looking at. It is at this point that you have enough information to make a decision-because now you know where the show is headed. This is your decision point.

You may want to watch two more episodes but please no more: This is the time to drop. It is not worth forty more episodes. Of course, if you are still with the show after episode sixteen then it is best just to be honest with yourself and simply admit that they have you hooked. So at that point simply relax and let this be the show you watch while folding laundry.

Do not be surprised when you find yourself looking forward to the next episodes of a show whose length once intimidated you, now that you know that you did not have to make a big commitment going in.Instead, a weekender could be that constant in K-dramaland that anchors your week: A friend who stays for a while.

Since this weekender/family drama has just started and many people are dipping their toes into the genre of weekenders for the first time, due to liking one actor or the other (or both), i have taken the liberty to copy + paste the Weekender survival guide from dramabeans user OldLawyer over here under the spoiler. It should help to minimize the complains about terrible characters (at the start of a family drama) and about its lengths, if you know *why* that is.

It's been two episodes only thus far, I dunno what you expect to have happened already? πŸ€”
Ah i see, sorry :D Her fam is really the worst yeah, but basically family dramas always start out with chars at their worst, bc it is a journey of 50 eps and seeing them growing into better people is more than half of the fun watching this genre, imo.

The plot itself infuriates me.

Thanks for "cleaning" that up 😁 But, I would still argue the styling of Bo Ah (white dress, cleansing before…
Heh you are welcome. I'd say tho that it makes sense for white magic to work you gotta be clean and of pure intent for the spell unlike curses which are messy, destructive and dark. Has again little to do with purity in the basic or religious sense. The spells follow a ritual, a certain order and rules in order to even take effect after all.

Hongjo is a loner so imo it makes sense for her character that she hasn't dated then and the one admonishing her for it is SFL who is an belittling rude and arrogant asshole in general to her, thinking she is far beneath her. Someone's inexperience in love is not the same as purity tho. If that would be the case then SY would be virginal too or whatever you called it, since it is the first time he is in love with a woman (Hongjo) πŸ˜‰

this drama is a mess but it's my kind of mess
Exactly I love the messiness of it, it is entertaining bc in real life people are messy as hell too. Hence it reflects that well and gives the characters more depth in not being as clear-cut.

I also don't find the characters' motivations and actions as well the story too difficult to comprehend. You just need to fill in gaps by the non-linear narrative. Tho admittedly the writer leaves a few too many atm, making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Go troll somewhere else.
You are aware this is a comment section right, where people post their opinions and also that you may not agree with everyone here right? You do know how MDL works right? πŸ‘€ Just asking lmao.

If you loved this show or are a mega fan of this writer, good for you and also my condolences for your bad taste lmao, but you do you. Just don't come here to piss in my ears and tell me it is raining. If you don't like my opinion just scroll past it buddy. Not that hard, thus you really should take your own advice from above instead to attack me without reason. Have a great day ✌️

WELL SAID!! honestly, TRHC feels like the idea of soaps that non-soap viewers immediatly would think of if they…
Yeah i base that on how different these two shows FEEL even comparing the two eps of each only. It is so very clear that Uee's char Hyoshim is already given a ton more agency in her situation, even as trapped as she is in slaving away for her family. Sounds like an oxymoron, but I dunno how exactly to describe it, it is just idk the writer's perspective of FL that is completely different, more positive in not showing her family members as being always right and such. We see FL working, actually having a life (as taxing it is atm), thinks like that. TRHC felt very restrictive also in regards of the places used for filming. And it is not just LYOL, but other weekenders too like Homemade Love Story, Once Again and even Five Enough from 2016 that felt way more modern in how they tackled family, relationships and its female characters.

I’m on ep 2 and I’m so mad. why is he forcing her into this. she literally looks so sad and desperate she…
Like the others said, keep watching, trust me on this. It is so good, very underrated drama.

Lol yeah I figured, some things just don't translate well over to english πŸ˜…
Yeah especially from korean to english often, it seems. Lots of manner of saying/speaking and cultural subtext that does not translate well. This seems to be one of those as clean refers to a) "to behave", aka no flirting, and b) getting things in order so their relationship can start "clean" ;)
Replying to angelwg Sep 22, 2023
lingual rendering was wrong. Sometimes there are no english words to translate to from my mother tongue. It is…
yeah it is literally that. Like if you translate the sentence word as it is, it means "it is not neat/clean" which does not make much sense lol. So you take context and add that to get what is meant. They are talking about not dating and not to flirt with someone else during the "waiting period" Since they want a clean start with their relationship, which requires some cleaning as well (on SY's part) but also time in order to do so. Hence why the word clean/neat appears it is meant in the context of "bringing something in order." and not "being pure"

If i have learned one thing during still limited time learning korean is that literal translation almost never works and needs context to make sense when translating it, but also to understand it in general very often 😁

For all comments complaining about FL meeting SFL , FL knows what SFL can do, there is no way to avoid…and it…
Yeah it is kinda deescalation, as this crayfish would not let up if she refused and then blow it up in the office or something, branding her a homewrecker or worse.

Okay, so what does pure mean? It was rubbing me the wrong tbh
made a post about it if you scroll down further a bit you will see it.

I feel like this series is definitely heavy on the misdirection and it's throwing people off. It's like a murder/mystery…
Yeah it feels like the worst show to watch while airing and the best to binge xD
