So when she heard that news from grand daughter she instantly went to her old trusty ways.
I asume she will just go along and try to make her son happy in next episodes while still believing he will die.
“you told me to do what you can’t? I can’t lose you either.”
It is actively ableist to start a story with a disabled main lead and by the end of the show, through plot machinations, shes not disabled anymore.
Its even more of an affront because in the original story, she is not actually disabled. They have inserted disability to raise the stakes, to make sure the only stakes arent he dies or she dies but also that she might have to 'go back' to being disabled.
Sol has been disabled her entire adult life, the show does not care about that. They dont want to engage with it or how it affects her so she can never be well rounded.
The very concept of 'curing' a disabled chara and making them no longer have that fisability, returning them back to their 'essence' is actively harmful.
It is disappointing and frustrating, and completely robs me of any enjoyment i couldve had in this show. These showrunners used disability as a plot device and week after week ive had to see fans discuss how scared they are for sol to 'end up' anything but abled and back to her 'normal' life. Those are the conversations and fears that this kind of narrative stokes.
It plops you into the story showing you some of the worst ableism, how sol cant even get a job because theres zero accessability in the world around her, and then promptly ignores it.
Anytime ive brought this up to anybody the response has been 'well this isnt that kind of show'. What kind of show do you mean? Is there a reason this show couldnt have engaged with her disabled experience? Is there a reason she couldnt just have been disabled from birth? Is it about the show or is it about how people dont WANT to see that and theyre using the show as an excuse?
And above all else, THIS WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL STORY. THEY MADE HER A DISABLED CHARACTER. Just to IGNORE that part of her.
The fact that everybody has been so accepting of this, that so many criticisms have been shut down and that so much ableist rhetoric has been passed around week after week has completely ruined any and all enjoyment i couldve had from this show.
