It was just....bad

She underperformed. It was so hard watching her. Watching these incredible actors perform long, difficult scenes, with long scripts and using a huge range of emotions was impressive. Then the scene flashes to Zhou Ye's expression which is always a blank stare. It doesn't matter what is going on, she looks identical in every scene. They could have just used a poster because there wouldn't be much of a difference. It really put a dampener to some very gut-wrenching scenes. It would have been far better off if she wasn't in the scene tbh. I really think the main casts should have been all the veteren actors. Their acting was 100x better than the FL. Xu Kai just didn't get enough screen time for the audience to connect to his backstory and the Shen family's tragedy. His revenge and seek for justice was overshadowed by Zhou Ye's revenge for her mom. They spent so little time on Xu Kai's character development. It seemed like his story was just an after thought. I felt every other character including all the sisters and in-laws outperformed Zhou Ye. 2nd and 3rd sister showed so many emotions in their scenes. Sorry, I might be a bit harsh but everytime Zhou Ye came on the screen, I felt very irritated and annoyed. Her expressions or lack-of expression I should say were so out of place. I don't know how it made the cut with the director but very early on, I stopped caring about her as a character as she simply was not a very likable or relatable character. She gave weird smiles and they always seem fake, I don't know. Very disappointed.

She was good in the Female General and Back in the Brink but she was also more expressive in those dramas. In this drama, she just has this resting B face...like no other expression. I don't know what happened...I would say she is one of the weakest actresses in this drama. I feel confused too.

I really like Zhou Ye in her other dramas and Xu Kai but this drama I feel missed the mark. There are a lot of awkward pauses, constant weird stares, and the script isn't great. Zhou Ye's acting seems to have regressed and forced. She expressed no emotions even during scenes like Xu Kai getting hurt or at the funeral which I feel took away and diminished the importance of that scene. She lacked micro expressions which I feel a seasoned actress should be able to portray. I am disappointed as I feel this drama had huge potential with how the story started but I felt a bit of cringe watching her. There were also a lot of repetitive scenes of Xu Kai barging into the manor to help the female lead. That scene repeated itself at least 10x. I have to say, all the older actors are killing it though. They are so good. Xu Kai is alright, I feel it's hard for an actor when the actress isn't performing quite up to par but I think he did his best. I think Zhou Ye needs to change her acting so she doesn't get pidgeon-holed into roles that requires her to just look cold and angry all the time.

I actually think the weakest actor was Zhuge Yue here. The original actor always had an air or arrogance/intelligence. I also like how he always looked a bit annoyed with Chu Qiao, yet he loved her. This new Zhuge Yue is way too soft and he has that sad puppy look and lacks charisma. He always has the same look.

Chu Qiao here I realized was 16 in real life so I feel she did her best for a young actor.

Yan Xun worked the hardest in terms of acting but he strays too far from the original Yan Xun. He seems a little crazy in Rebirth and possessive. The original Yan Xun wanted revenge but he was still psychologically sound and proud. This Yan Xun seems overly emotional and quite unlikable and pitable in the way he goes after Chu Qiao.

Overall though, I don't think it's that bad. It is still ok to watch. I would give it a 7.8 lol

No she didn't like both men and she didn't realize her feelings for Yuwen Yue till late in the drama. However, he was always there to protect her. She sided with Yan Xun because of how much he suffered and the injustice he endured. She wanted regime change and she detested the current empire so she wanted to help Yan Xun to conquer Yan Bei so he can establish peace. But Yan Xun changed and became a lot more savage after the massacre of his family, which the FL didn't expect. At the end of season 1, Yan Xun used Yuwen Yue's love for Chu Qiao to lure him to kill him. In Rebirth, they changed the last scene. I liked the PA version a lot more, you can just watch Ep 58. The FL battles against a lot of soldiers to try to save Yu wen Yue. The scene is also imo more heartbreaking in PA when she realized she caused his ambush. You should just watch ep 58 of PA :)

PA was so good. I rewatched it again before Rebirth came out. Although it is a bit aged, you will get use to it lol.

I am fine with the new FL and ML but why did they make Yan Xun's hair so bad? The initial Yan Xun had such nice braided hair. This dude looks like a savage from the stone ages lol.

In the novel, his name is Zhuge Yue, but they changed that in Part 1. Part 2 which is Rebirth follows the novel more closely apparently.

This might be a dumb question but I seemed to have missed the part (can't seem to find it), why the ML has to rent a small place and not live at his own residence. Was this every explained?

That's what I am wondering, the rules and regulations must be different there. I feel if it's illegal, the Chinese government wouldn't allow the drama to be aired.

Sometimes people get away with relatives esp with a different last name but treating an immediate family member is an absolute no no here.

One more thing to add, in Ontario, TCM doctors are regulated and have to follow the same rules as doctors and nurses. It must be different in other countries.
