Some of us have finished watching ALP and others have watched the last 3 episodes while waiting for subs (but…
So many! - Shang Gu luring Bai Jue into a kiss only to turn the other way (the bts for this scene is quite cute) - Any time the three true gods are together without Shang Gu - Any time the four true gods are together lol - When Shang Gu sacrifices herself - Hou Chi and Qing Mu’s first meeting and the following scene where she turns powerful - Anytime Jing Zhao is zapped by thunder - Hou Chi and Qing Mu getting punished by thunder together - Qing Mu’s various tactics of trying to win his father-in-law over lol - Hou Chi and Qing Mu’s wedding - Feng Ran confronting Jing Jian about their relationship - Bai Jue’s awakening - All the heartbreaking scenes in episodes 41 and 42 - Tian Qi and Yuan Qi’s interactions - Shang Gu’s awakening - All the times when Shang Gu broke Bai Jue’s heart with words - Bai Jue and Yuan Qi’s father and son day - The ending of course haha
ALP is the first 2021 drama that I've given a rating of 10. Some other thoughts below in spoilers
- I think letting Wu Huan live forever is an acceptable punishment. Shang Gu didn't satisfy her wish of being killed, nope. Just let her live for infinity. Jing Zhao should've been punished as well, but if you think about it, she will also live for as long as her mother is alive. I consider that as losing her mother and of course her two brothers and father. That's her punishment.
- Ugh I cried thorough 47-49, right up until the last moment when Bai Jue was reborn and Shang Gu ran into his arms. I get that we might've expected more scenes of them after that hug, but for me, I think that was perfect. Now would I object to actually seeing a special episode of their reunion? Of course not. But as far as endings go, I am satisfied with the final scene.
Great article! This drama is one of the few J-romances that kept my interest in the past few years. The natural banter between the leads is so relaxing to watch.
Seriously what I hate most is seeing the fandom being divided like this now, because they only see how much Hou…
You make very good points about Qing Mu. I also think that Qing Mu choosing not to tell Hou Chi that he will disappear when Bai Jue is back is also similar to Bai Jue not telling Shang Gu about his plan. It does go with what you said about Qing Mu and Bai Jue being the same person. Ultimately, at their core, they do not want to Shang Gu/Hou Chi to be burdened and would rather sacrifice themselves. Bai Jue's love is very deep.

The thought of Bai Jue setting himself up to be sacrificed and without anyone except for Tian Qi to talk with is so sad. Perhaps we have been spoiled by Qing Mu being so outwardly expressive of his love for Hou Chi that we've forgotten about Bai Jue being the complete opposite. The deeper his love is, the harder it is for other people to see. Even Shang Gu can't see through him.
