I've watched the 1991 version of this drama and I can confidently say this was never meant to be a romcom. Also,…
To be honest, even though this is called Tokyo Love Story, my viewing of the 1991 version made me realise this was not a romance/romantic drama at all. The drama seemed to focus more on 4 different people in a relationship, and the complex emotions of being in one [focusing a lot on Rika's character, and the freedom she yearned contrasted with Kanji's desire to want to tie down his partner & the various other facets to the relationship]. I haven't watched this version because I heard there is a rape scene so I've been hesitating.
I mostly watch the mature & darker J dramas so I've seen a lot of good natural acting that has blown me away.. but yeah it must be a matter of taste I guess. I'm pretty new to this site & I often see J dramas being criticised & placed in a general category which irks me because out of all the other various counterparts, they bring out the most variety of storytelling and human emotions so I feel the need to be like that's not true lol Nothing against you.
THAT ENDING! I did not see that coming. Mind blown even though it made me uncomfortable. I will never ever forget this drama especially because of that ending. Like it will forever bug me that I'll never know what the writer fully meant (it could go either way, see spoiler)
This was a great drama. Very simple, but really deep. Great acting, OST, story & just all that outdoor filming. DAMMNNNNN I've never seen any drama film literally from one part of Japan all the way to the other part.. the amount of places they went & all that beauty they captured. Watch it, it's a very different story that will leave an everlasting impression.

Trust me, when it comes to J dramas I don't look at ratings at all! I always watch for myself & then decide. Also with J dramas I always expect the unexpected. It starts off a certain way & they are able to turn a story such that you're just mind blown (esp the older ones) so even the plot summaries can be really misleading.

Really? Urgh I hate it. So many brilliant J dramas on this site have like 7+ rating and maybe because I am relatively new to this site, it really bothers me.
Probably the most disappointing romcom (edit: romance drama, there is no comedy) I’ve ever seen. Not sure what…

Also, there's a lot of natural acting (from FLs) in J dramas. It's definitely not a rarity. Too bad the cringey, teen ones (which would make up for more of the bad dramas) are what's popular. The good stuff are watched only by a select few on this site, unfortunately.
Am I the only one who felt that Nakazawa involvement with the main love triangle felt forced?? And it was just…
SAME, dude. One, the ship has already sailed and two, his feelings came out of nowhere (i was like huh?) Also, like you said, it really looks like the classic trope of having a love triangle. But let's see how it plays out..
When I started this show, I thought Nakazawa was the ML lol.
8/10 Went in with low expectations, but ended up really liking this thanks to the finale (see my review for spoilers). Highly recommended for anyone who is looking for something short, simple and heartwarming.
