I think I love this more than TMoPB (or I might be swept up in the emotion, we shall see how often I rewatch it!).
But that is not something I say lightly as thatās my benchmark for emotional and epic xian xia. But IS is just heartwrenching and so many of the scenes, even when I jump in and out of them make me feel so much emotion. In TMoPB the most import thing for me was how excellent Mark Chao was at delivering the emotional scenes and the CP feel of the main couple, they were really well matched in emotions and looks. Your heart ached for Ye Hua. I feel like Cheng Yi really pushes IS up to that level, as does Yang Zi. The focus is really on the actors in IS and their expressions and emotions. I go full on ugly sobbing mode in the ep 39 scene when she rejects TZ.
I have seen many xian xia and costume drama since TMoPB and a lot of them felt like they were just box ticking for the audience, like yes to up and coming leads, yes to bickering and the suffering, the CGI and the misunderstanding. Itās easy to make a big budget xian xia, but not easy to make one that stays with you for so long.
One of the other highlights is the lack of episode upon episode of filler. Despite there being some filler (which is debatable since it depends how much you like the side characters) it has far less filler than other xian xia, and each arc is really exciting. (Iām looking at you Pillowbook!!! And your 15 episodes of Feng Jiu being dijunās cleaner and then pet fox š )
During my daily 24 hours of watching IS videos on YouTube I think saw a clip of YD holding the hair pin after she has her memories back and looking sad. She didnāt destroy it. yay! So happy. She must have just done the same disappearing trick as YY.
This video is hilarious. Iām not sure how much can be understood without translating, but itās a short of the differences between Xuan Ye and YY (The title says āThe difference between green tea (used to mean someone sly who pretends to be innocent to get an advantage) and the sweet naive boy.
Scenario 1 - when you break things. XY - immediately apologise, gain sympathy YY - blame someone else
Scenario 2 - in the presence of heavenly emperor XY - keeps looking at RQ YY - pretending he canāt see YD š¤£
Scenario 3 - confessing XY - brave and upfront YY - I donāt feel love, I only have responsibilities
Scenario 4 - when getting hurt for love XY - āArgh! I donāt think I got hurt enough. Iāll hit myself to get more sympathy.ā YY - wait until YD has left, then goes to take punishment. Suffer in silence. š¤£
Scenario 5 - when you discover you want to be with them XY - immediately gets married YY - gets married in a dream š¤£
One of the fan videos (of the hundreds I watch š¤£) predicts that in the final battle YY will sacrifice himself to protect everyone. But YD manages to save a part of his celestial spirit. His celestial spirit then takes a hundred years to become a person and then they are free to be together again and live in the mortal realm š„¹ That would be nice because I canāt see them getting out of the battle unscathed. I hope heās not a mortal though, I want them to live forever.
Thereās a clip of a new-ish kiss scene at the beginning of this. At least a different shot (full length) of one Iāve seen before. I think itās probably the ending scene. YY/YD look so in love š„¹š„° Nobody is standing like a block of wood š
I have to admit I donāt understand the rotating in Chinese drama kissing š This one is ok, but sometimes it spins so much it takes me out of the moment because itās so weird! I understand different angles, but spinning in a circle? Do kdrama do revolving kisses?? š¤ canāt think of one.
Does that mean YZ did this drama because she liked the script and Cheng Yi? š Shipper mode activated, haha.…
Shipper mode deactivated. Sad now š¢
In my opinion this is a real highlight of YZās career. I loved her in GGS, but it didnāt test her acting ability and her modern drama scripts are so so. She really grew up in this drama for me.

Yeah, it is easier for child actors like Leo Wu to go without an agency because they have some clout already. But for the others it really is a hard graft, nothing done on favours.
Huanrui is making tons of money from this drama so in their eyes its already successful the only thing is yang…

I watched an interesting C-drama fan video about actors who donāt have agencies. Leo Wu, Chen Xing Xu (Goodbye my princess) and Zheng Ye Cheng (Love 020) are the ones I recognise.
Itās much harder because they have to get jobs based on the audition process, and they end up building a management team from relatives or friends. I think acting is a hard business and itās tough to navigate all the promotion and politics in addition to focussing on acting. I donāt know what the solution is, but Iām glad that Cheng Yi is now super successful, and in the future if he wants to ditch his agency he can.
I totally agree. If you check out the costume designer's past work, you can see that he's experienced in ancient…
Yes, I love happy camp anyway, but that is by far my favourite episode. I also have to confess I havenāt seen Love and Redemption š I started to fangirl Cheng Yi after the episode of Happy Camp. It was enough for me. Heās so adorable in it, and his 5 minute acting is incredible.

Have you seen the Happy Camp episode with Cheng Yi and other actors in ancient costume cosplaying? Itās hilarious. I hope people start cosplaying him as YY or Asura King!
Can I just say what a great job the costume design team are doing? I really love Cheng Yiās outfits and hair styles. I think the last time I remembered such iconic xianxia clothing it was Ye Hua in Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms with his hair and black robes.
Obviously as XY Cheng Yi kills it. He set a whole new standard and all other demon lords canāt hope to keep up. But even as TZ and YY, as TZ I love his hairstyles and as YY I love his black outfit and his white ethereal gown. And the heavenly armour looks really good too!
But in the end YD asked YY to erase her memories, he didnt do it against her will.
I think I missed that? I remember she said she wanted to forget, but she couldnāt.
But I didnāt think that meant she wanted someone else to take them away? I only interpret it that way because in ep 39 she says that the reason sheās still angry with YY is because he removed her memories.
