I would say this drama has a little bit of this and a little bit of that, The story is quite typical of C-drama coming of age where the girl is not so bright while boy is a genius. However, girl here may not be the smartest but she is the most real person you could ever meet. The lead actors are brilliant in their art, it was was such a joy to see their natural chemistry on screen. The other standout was Uncle DaChuan, ahhh such a genuine and passionate heart, this guy wears his heart on his sleeves in the most genuine way possible. I love the relationship between stepdad and female lead, such pure pure love. I did not like the lighting and the flow of the story at times . Some scenes are drawn out, unnecessary at times. I feel this could have been wrapped up in 26 episodes...,but I would still recommend it for any of those who likes the genre.
This is the kind of movie you debrief about after watching.. My family had a good conversation about it. We talked about the glaring lines of real life depicted in the cinematic visual lines; the tangible and intangible divide of the upper and lower floors of the houses and what they represent; and distinct smell of different social statuses. My fave actor of all time Lee Sun-Kyun delivered an awesome performance as expected and the rest of the cast was just as awesome. The brilliant director captured the heart and vision of the equally talented screenwriter and gave the moviegoers something to definitely talk about.
Epic! Love everything and everyone in it :) I really like the fact that the cause of the disease is revealed yet the full cure is is still a work in progress.
Thankful that somebody voiced out exactly how I feel about this drama. I usually enjoy these kinds especially if the actors are doing such an exceptionally good job of portraying the characters. The male actors were all so good, I felt their emotions and fought for their cause, I have no complaints! So I find it strange that I literally dragged myself to finish the series. I ended up reading the recaps of the last 2 episodes elsewhere. I still plan to watch the last 2 episodes sometime somewhere...
After just finishing the last episode it feels more like I have been watching an historical drama with a love…
I strongly agree with you, the love (love/hate but love won) between these two caught in the middle of a messy social and political structure of the time they lived in to me seems the be the main plot of this story. Come to think of it, all Hwi wanted wanted was a sack of rice and for Seon Ho was acceptance as a son (concubine mother or not). It was beautifully portrayed minus the immortality of all the stab wounds they endured from each other, lol.
What a great review. I particularly love how you characterize Dong Hoon's last crying scene "the loneliest scene…
Why thank you Malory! Have you watched the show? That scene broke my heart, I had to hit the pause button because it was so painful to see him in such a state....LSK is the best!
A great drama to watch for the start of 2020. Cute and lovable. Watch it if you want a light and fluffy moment. Nothing too heavy on the mind, or heart, here. Just pure innocence and the cinematography is awesome!
I’m on episode 16 and I am sooo scared to continue based on multiple comments about the sad ending....argh my heart is already breaking and i haven’t even read a spoiler yet..
I came across this article while reading up on Kim Jung Hyun as I am totally impressed at his acting in School 2017. Sad to hear that his health deteriorated but I heard he’s recently back on the small screen. Yay!
Thanks for shedding light on method acting. Makes total sense. Another actor I would add to the list is Joaquin Phoenix, mind-blowing how far these actors would go to perfect their craft. On the other end of the spectrum though, I think professionalism is the defining line between the (a) best and (b) exceptional actors. Both groups have abilities to invoke deep emotions, so effortlessly it seems, even with the simplest of things like raising of the eyebrow or tilting of the head, yet the exceptional ones can step back into the real world shortly after the director yells “cut”. They appear to have a clear understanding that work is ...well, just work.
I’m trying to put the pieces of my heart back together after Nokdu laid bare his hurting heart to his confused father’s heart. Such agony and pain...I feel you Nokdu! I know Jang Dong Yoon is a phenomenal talent but that scene left me breathless. Kang Tae Oh is not far behind! These boys I tell you are the bomb! Writer please don’t reduce my heart to dust, not with a bad ending....just please, pretty please end this story well.
I was expecting an epic revolutionary war for episode 18 but instead we got another cliffhanger extraordinaire to this amazing series. There are still so many layers to uncover and the reveal of Red Claw in the last minute was brilliant! Whether it’s cartoon or not for the next episodes I am hooked! I do wish they will carry on as is. The cast is superb, the actor who played Tae Aplok is sooo good, reminds me of Gimli from LOTR. In fact the whole series gave me the LOTR feels. I am most interested in the Neanthals role, Saya’s complicated character, Xabara’s contribution, where Mubaek’s loyalty will bring him and ultimately Eunsom’s and Tanya’s friendship/relationship.
I love EunWoo and Im the biggest astro fan, BUThis acting at gangnam beauty was lacking.Did he got better in this…
Short answer, yes.! I am not an Astro fan but I have finished Gangnam Beauty. I agree with your opinion but I think it is partly due to the character of his role.
I tried. I really did but alas I just can’t. I lasted until the 13th episode though. I watched because I was hoping to see LMH acting chops in portraying a gay role but there was none of that here. His assistant however was so good! The plot was weak and the flow was not fluid, some characters were introduced very late in the show while some had too much unnecessary exposure. The main female lead’s character was confusing and I’m sorry to say there was no chemistry between her and LMH. I ended up reading dramabeans recaps because I hate not knowing the end of any story, good or bad. Will not recommend this one unless you are a die hard LMH fan.

I heart you show. Please don’t change.
