Title A Girl Like Me Spoiler
i read a little of the novel before this so it was hard for me to like it at first cause it was so different!…
i was most disappointed by ban hua at first. cause novel!BH felt more elegant, more sophisticated and smarter—she just liked to flaunt her riches more than her intelligence but she was smart. drama!BH felt like a simplified version of that but there are hints here and there. either way though, ban hua’s essence remained. the character still represents that a strong and confident woman can be successful.

ban heng, on the other hand, wasn’t such a glutton in the novel. he was just a loyal brother, that was it. at first i didn’t like how they made him a glutton, cause i felt it made him look like a simpleton, but now i see that they used that so he would have a connection with xie wanyu which i am actually starting to like!

out of all the characters in the novel, xie wanyu was the most pitiful. she believed (or made herself believe) that the 2nd prince loved her. she hadn’t done anything wrong, aside from childishly bullying ban hua, but she too met a bad end because she was following the orders of the 2nd prince, trying to gain his love. and so this sub romance plot between ban heng and xie wanyu is a welcome change! if they use food to connect them, so be it!

rong xia in the novel wasn’t as underhanded but i actually really like how they made him a “schemer” in the drama hahaha he’s utilizing his smarts in a more practical way! at the core though, both novel and drama rong xia are the same— they’re both innately good.

i read a little of the novel before this so it was hard for me to like it at first cause it was so different! i liked the novel so i found myself comparing it and being disappointed that it wasn’t faithful at all. but i gave it a chance and ended up really really really liking the drama!! i actually like the changes now as well and for the first time, i’m actually looking forward to them! i know how it ends but i’m excited to find out what changes they’ll make and how they’ll execute it!

there was a time when everyone wanted to watch romance and now there are a lot who don’t want it anymore haha times sure have changed~

to anyone who’s curious, take it from someone who doesn’t care much about romance too— there’s barely any here. the moments there are can be ignored but they’re actually pretty sweet and they don’t act illogically because of it. their feelings don’t get frustrating. it just becomes their drive to watch out for each other, in a non frustrating way XD

and that kiss? it only happened because it was life or death. besides, we get a real good bromance moments seconds later anyway!

Do i have to watch the first season first? Cause I'm actually here just for chengyi
no need to watch the first season. if they reference the first season there were always flashbacks so it’s not confusing~

Is the BL here obvious or is it toned down? (I'm not a fan of BL) And does Cheng Yi get lots of screen time?!
i didn’t feel there was BL while i was watching (except for one scene which both actors laughed at a lot)

there were episodes where cheng yi wasn’t there but he has a whole arc near the end which im sure you’ll love if you’re his fan!

You mentioned ep. 8 on twitter and you talk here about Neo being eloquent and him caring about the team - I wanted…
i was actually a bit surprised that neo was so confident nearing arrogant in that episode. turns out he wasn’t! it was evil editing after all! to those who don’t know neo that well, he really would’ve come off as arrogant.

but i really liked their teamwork tho, despite the evil editing! we’ll never know the truth but, i like to think that neo was the reason why their team worked so well together! more than their dance, it was fun seeing them have fun on stage! on the other hand, the other team was obviously nervous— winning was really important to them. but neo’s team was different— they just simply enjoyed the performance. i really liked their attitude! they were all smiles throughout that episode. as team captain, don’t you think neo was the reason for it? hahaha i’d like to think so XDD he seems to be the type who takes responsibilities very seriously!

neo has never done a drama that focused solely on romance so this could change but haha to me, his relationships with his on-screen families are much more interesting than his romantic interests XD

in inference notes, i loved seeing him with his elder brother more and wished the drama focused more on their pasts instead.

in cambrian period, jian zi’s relationship with his elder brother, father and his teacher was much muuuch more engaging. the drama among them was so rich and so interesting i felt it was a shame that it was just used as a plot device.

in when we were young, while hua biao’s antics with yang xi was hilarious and endearing it was his interactions with hua nainai that really touched my heart and even brought me to tears T___T

and then in his latest stint in birth of an actor!!!! goooosh! even though they must have only met for a short time, it was so easy to believe that they really were mother and child. plus, the way the actress looked so fond and so proud of him for some reason after the performance ended~ and the way he held her hand too! alsjdjdjsks i hope they get to play mother and child in a drama one day XDD

with all that i’m starting to think that maybe romance roles just aren’t for him hahahahahhaha i wanna see him act in a family drama more now XD

that’s true for ep 7! we did get to see more of him because of that hahaha

i only knew that neo injured his leg from weibo comments but i have no idea how he injured it. was it during the basketball game? or he’d injured his leg before that? but gosh, it sucks that he wasn’t able to play his best in front of his idol! i watched how tracy mcgrady played and it’s obvious that neo really emulates him! the way they shoot is the same! neo must have really studied how mcgrady played and yet he wasn’t able to show it. i saw some clips from the penguin league and i was really wondering why neo wasn’t playing as well as i know he can. turns out that he really couldn’t at that time :((

neo’s finally going to take part in a romcom! a historical romcom, but a romcom nevertheless hahaha let his next drama be a modern romcom please XDD

anyway, they just started filming this one this january. with the ongoing situation in china though, there’s a high chance there’d be delays in filming.

While I admire Neo’s passion for dancing, that skill isn’t exactly his strongest and so I put off watching this for the longest time.

I am so glad I did watch it though!

Because while Neo wasn’t the best dancer there, I got to see him display maturity and wisdom way beyond his years. He was brave, constantly taking on every challenge. Intelligent, like when he realized he had to challenge in one episode cause of the number he got. Compassionate and warm hearted, because he took care of his teammates and made sure their spirits were high, was there to help them when needed, even tho he was the youngest! Plus, while I understood basically nothing, it felt like he was eloquent, like he had a way with words, because every time he spoke it felt like they had substance, meaning. The participants also seemed to always ask for his opinion, but idk haha it felt that way to me!

I also really liked his relationship with Liang Liang, his dance teacher/partner. To me, it didn’t feel like they were teacher-student. They felt more like actual partners, like they were on the same footing. Whenever we see them practice, there were times when Neo would offer his own suggestions on the choreo. Even in the music they used! He even used his own voice for a sound effect (tho im not sure if they ended up using it haha)! Plus it was fun seeing them play around! It felt like they were simply friends preparing for a performance. I’m not sure about the other pairs/trios, but Neo and Liang Liang seemed to put priority over giving the best performance and enjoying the experience rather than winning. I forgot what episode that was, but Liang Liang did say something along those lines, that enjoying dance was much more important.

It was also funny to me how there were some participants who thought Neo had learned how to dance since childhood. But nope, he’d only trained for at most two years, maybe even less!

I only hope that one day (probably when Neo finally gets the recognition he deserves T__T), that this show will get subbed. I could only rely on context clues, facial expression and body language but it really felt like Neo was very inspiring in this show.

true! i was wondering about why he had to do the hiphop moves because he didn’t really lose or anything right. he just went last. i felt it was unfair because basically their performance meant nothing.

i’m rewatching this show right now. did you notice that in ep 3, when they showed minghao’s profile, that ‘the lost tomb 2’ was there? i thought it was strange because tlt2 aired in 2019 right? hahaha wwwy wasn’t even in his profile! i was thinking that they put that there because maybe he was filming tlt2 during the filming of shake it up?

it’s been a year since then but, what did neo mean when he said he was accidentally skipped? D:

you know i’ve always put off watching this show because of reasons haha but i’m so glad i finally did watch it. even tho i didn’t understand anything other than the parts i google translated, neo’s attitude in this show was exemplary. he showed maturity way beyond his years. he was courageous and brave and smart. he faced all the challenges head on. he was amazing to watch. i just hope it was subbed haha
