Bearing in mind I've only seen the 90s version, at what point did she try to break free? Apart from when she went off to improve herself for him I can only remember Kotoko following him around like a puppy. And right up until the end, I definitely did not get the impression Irie enjoyed her overkill attention. In fact, their relationship gave me a brother/sister fake hostility/adoration feeling. Irie had a bad attitude, but I don't think he was particularly manipulative with his nastiness.

That is certainly the message, but I disagree that Irie is abusive. His behaviour is acceptable under the circumstances. If their genders were reversed, female Irie wouldn't be seen as abusive.
I understand Irie's frustration in Itazura Na Kiss. He's mean to her, but I can't call it an abusive relationship. Girl is exceptionally stupid, she does nothing but get in his way, she forces her wants and needs onto him, and by the end I think it's more that he got used to her than started to love her. If a male character behaved the way she did, he'd be the one seen as abusive.
Gosh, so many recs to peruse. Thanks, Ajummas! Talking about quirky dramas, I enjoyed Shikatoko Aoniyoshi (http://mydramalist.com/1509-shikaotoko-aoniyoshi),…

The How to Read volume of the manga says Near is male. I don't care if he's portrayed by an actor or an actress. He's a pretty ambiguous character in all sorts of ways.
Akamatsu comes out of prison a changed man, and he and Shiraishi set up a support group for people with an addiction to money.
