"Also, every guy is, you know...gay"Oh, really? I'll jot that down in my "First World Problems and Other Non-Issues…
"the color of your skin is irrelevant"
you brought up rosa parks and black people babe not me. You're also assuming that the queer individuals involved in these productions can't also be actively involved in grassroots movements for queer people and other minorities. You have no idea what they might be doing.
"could you quote me where I told anyone "what type of art they can or can't be drawn to?""
Um the part where you say verbatim "im going to bite my tongue and not say what that says about you" and also in the way you not so subtly imply that I, and I quote, must be one of these "gay people whose lack of self-respect makes them OK with watching material that finds their existence too repugnant to be fully depicted on screen"
Is everything okay at home? Can you not see how that seems to imply that your own personal view of queer media is the only valid one? I can appreciate gay media from all over the world. That doesn't make me self hating or mean i lack self respect lmao. I just have enough objective awareness to realize it's not the actor's or the director's or the staff's fault they live under an oppressive homophobic government. There are literal censored bromances that get pulled just because they even hint at something gayer (the spirealm) so yes, if i want to support these productions that try to get queer art out in some way shape or form i'm going to do that.
And like i said, the actors in Stay with me display physical and emotional intimacy in a way that is far more developed in their show compared to some of the other kbls i've seen, so i don't see why they should be excluded from the conversation. The SWM screenwriter is the same woman who wrote Addicted. She and the production clearly set out to tell a love story (as best as they can) nothing in this show is straight washed.
"why are YOU watching censored shit"
i've explained multiple times that just because the explicit gay content might be censored, does not mean it wasn't made with queer intent. do you think all the queer individuals working to make these shows are all homophobic self loathing individuals? you obviously don't have to like or even engage with censored BLs but that's a very big and privileged assumption to make when you don't live in the same society they do. Your view of queer art won't be their view of queer art. Art is subjective, we literally cannot be wrong in how we engage with it. If i see a photo of two apples and think they're subliminally conveying the beauty and complexities of homosexual desire i am 100% valid in that analysis.
"Thus, I will be reporting you to MDL admins."
okay now i just feel like you're flirting with me
"I respect your right to HAVE an opinion but I don't have to respect the opinions you have."
Then i guess i have nothing else to say lol this was fun tho! xoxo
"Also, every guy is, you know...gay"Oh, really? I'll jot that down in my "First World Problems and Other Non-Issues…
its nothing too steamy obviously but i think their physical and emotional chemistry more than make up for it! they have more physical intimacy than ive seen in some kbls so i think dismissing it as a piece of queer art just bc its a censored bl is ridiculous
let’s not act like there has been no lgbt representation in mainstream at all lol. mine, nevertheless & more…
I never said there was no representation, it’s just that more often than not lgbt people In mainstream kdramas aren’t treated with the same care as the straight ones. there’s no reason do han couldn’t have had his own love story. It could’ve done a lot for mainstream queer representation. Instead they made the only other gay character a creep and wrote in a romance for the two straight side characters
For a main character do Han was pretty much ignored and his storyline was greatly underdeveloped despite being the catalyst for the entire show. It’s just disappointing is all
Aou is so fun in this show I hope GMM utilizes him more! He really brings so much energy to his character whenever he’s on screen & he and boom have the cutest chemistry (GMM please give them their own show I am begging) I also didn’t realize how tall boom is? He like towers over pond
Phuwin is a great comedic actor, I love that he has a character that is likeable here compared to some of the others he has played.
"Also, every guy is, you know...gay"Oh, really? I'll jot that down in my "First World Problems and Other Non-Issues…
i'm black and gay so you really don't need to explain our oppression and civil rights history to me, but sure let's just tell all the queer citizens in communist china to line up at congress with their pride flags. That's definitely worked out for them before. i would love to see revolution in china for women, the lgbt community, and the working class, but until that happens- this is all these creatives can do.
my main point was that korea is a democratic country. China isn't. korea is free to make queer shows without fear of having their production shut down so I hold them to a different standard than i would towards a queer director in china working within the confines of their society. This doesn't mean we should stop criticizing the homophobia and the silencing of queer art that is continually censored in china, but I can also appreciate how productions (like stay with me) still try to deliver as queer a product as they can.
I don't know why you think you have the right to judge what type of art someone can or can't be drawn to? Stay with me is a vastly more well written and resonant love story than dozens of other real bls out there. what it says about me is that i can value queer art in many different forms. what it says about YOU is that you cant respect other people's opinions or perspectives. and just for the record they do have kisses in stay with me (something that many kbls cannot say)
The alternative is NO queer content being produced in china at all, which i think would be worse. There are still queer chinese citizens that can still hopefully feel represented in SOME type of way through even censored works. Just because those works may not match your (or mine for that matter) definition of a bl doesn't mean we can dictate that it just not exist. it's not being made for us.
BITCH i have not cried watching a tv show since 2020.... my ass was not expecting to be brought to tears in the end i'm honestly typing this review through blurry eyes 😭 everything about this was so expertly done from the acting to the writing to the cinematography like i'm genuinely floored. what a beautiful little show. i need more of them i'm praying somehow we get another season.
i honestly think this dethroned where your eyes linger as my favorite kbl which i thought was never going to happen. flowers to the entire production
came back after dropping it at episode 4 to see if they at least let do han end up with a cute boyfriend and his own happily ever after and nope lmfao guess i won't be returning. one day korea will realize lgbtq individuals deserve to have their happiness depicted onscreen in the mainstream too
"Also, every guy is, you know...gay"Oh, really? I'll jot that down in my "First World Problems and Other Non-Issues…
hi i'm eavesdropping a little but just because the CCP may be authoritarian and homophobic doesn't mean the creatives and actors involved in these shows are. censored bls are currently the only way to get semi queer coded material out of the mainland. i don't think we should punish them for that and i think it's extremely unfair to say they only exist for homophobes and self hating gay people. stay with me, even if censored, is still one of the most resonant bls i've ever seen
now if we're talking about the kdramas that adapt bl source material and straight wash it= that's a different story.
homophobia, patriarchy and sexual assault are global issues. the drama did a commendable job in depicting them,…
i don't know what you're even really talking about anymore tbh and your comments below are so far removed from the point i and many of the other posters here were making- which is that many of these characters and their actions are driven by homophobia. that is all. as a gay person i really don't need the concept of homophobia, internalized or not, explained to me and i definitely don't need to go see a psychologist to discuss the shortcomings of a half baked tv show? Is everything okay at home?
you asked for examples, and i gave you many. there's no subjective or cultural misunderstandings here.
is it bad that i like the dynamic between ken and japan more than either of them have with seiji? imagine is a bait and switch enemies to lovers id gaggg. id also be fine with a throuple. at this point im team ken idk im a sucker for pining and angst
homophobia, patriarchy and sexual assault are global issues. the drama did a commendable job in depicting them,…
“could you tell us at what point did jooha take an attitude of rejection or contempt against doyoon for being homosexual”
did we watch the same show lmao? the second doyoon kisses him he punches him in the face and calls him “dirty.” he repeatedly says that he’s “not like him” (obviously talking about his sexuality) and that he’s “creepy.” He then ices doyoon out for days (weeks?) because of it. I think you’re confused on the concept of homophobia. just because it’s not always blatant or physical (even though in jooha’s case it was) doesn’t make these acts any less homophobic. internalized homophobia is still a facet of homophobia, just like internalized or institutional racism are other facets of racism. gay people can still be homophobic even if it’s coming from a place of self hatred and denial. He doesn’t have to explicitly call him a slur to be homophobic. There are many layers and nuances regarding homophobia just like there are with racism or sexism. seoheon and doyoon are both physically and psychologically bullied by jooha and Taeyi due to their sexuality
saying no one in this series is homophobic is wild and shows you kinda just have a very misguided take on homophbia. internalized homophobia IS still homophobia, and these characters were still committing outward homophobic acts against doyoon and seoheon. we as an audience were never shown a conversation or acknowledgement of either boys’ homophobic actions or thinking and that’s why their respective relationships feel rushed. I urge you to do some research on homophobia (internal and external) the motivations behind it and how it’s manifested within members of the lgbtq community.
and I already said I don’t think what Taeyi did was sexual assault, but it was still a violation of seoheon’s boundaries and done to further shame him and his sexuality by calling him a “girl.” that’s the blatant, humiliating homophobic moment you were asking for. it seems like you’re doing a lot of guesswork regarding certain characters motivations in order to fill in the blanks of a inconsistent, half baked narrative (which you wouldn’t have to do in a fully realized story) which is fine, but doesn’t negate the issues I and many of the other posters here have found with the show
i enjoyed this! I definitely echo some of the sentiments below that the relationships with the boys seemed rushed, and the character development with jooha and taeyi was nowhere to be found- but they were still very cute once established.
I personally think Doyoon carried the show. the actor did an excellent job in displaying all the different sides of his character, he felt very natural and raw. the talent coming out of omegax is crazy i might have to check them out.
That being said i think all the actors did a great job with what they were given, and the final kiss in the last episode was really well done. once again my biggest criticism with a kbl is the runtime. i'm sure if this was able to be fully fleshed out its themes would've been executed much better.
Its definitely worth watching for anyone second guessing. It has the same formula with a mixture of those k-web…
man i hate comments like these, why can't you just praise the show you just watched without trying to bring down an entire industry? sure there are some terrible thai bls out there, but there are also SO many terrible k bls as well. I have enjoyed many kbls but imo thai dramas usually have them beat in the chemistry, storytelling, and representation / diversity department. like i dont think ive ever seen a kbl where a trans person is even mentioned? korea has a much more sophisticated film industry so they tend to have higher production value and excel at technical aspects such as acting, or cinematography- but not by much due to their short runtimes and small budgets.
there are many amazing thai bls (and maybe they're just not your vibe) but i just hate when people try to bash the entire industry as if there aren't quality shows coming out of thailand.
homophobia, patriarchy and sexual assault are global issues. the drama did a commendable job in depicting them,…
homophobia was absolutely present within this show, internal and external. i mean Jooha's entire character was centered around it. It formed the foundation of he and doyoon's relationship. Jooha punches doyoon in the face when he kisses him and ignores him for most of the show. Just because they're gay themselves doesn't make the homophobia driving jooha's or taeyi's actions any less present.
the problem is the show didn't show jooha's or taeyi's growth from their internalized homophobic mindset, to coming to accept dooyoon's and seoheon's love. it feels unearned and rushed (which it probably was due to the time constraints) Not once did the show address or try and correct the homophobic mindset these characters had. that's where it falls short
and i also wouldn't call what taeyi did to seoheon sexual assault, but it was absolutley a violation of his consent. Every character violated each other's boundaries in some way, but in a teen romance drama (especially a queer one) that is usually a necessary part of storytelling within adolescent characters. The important part was they all acknowledged it and apologized to the appropriate party.
if you’re watching a main stream kdrama for a single gay character , that’s really like unreal expectations
He’s a main character and his sexuality is quite central to the plot so I hoped that meant he would be treated differently within this show but I guess my expectations for even that was too high 😭 I’m just waiting for actual gay representation in mainstream kdramas that isn’t sad or shown in a negative light
a huge part of their contract was acting in love in public 😭 nothing about what ah jung and ji han are doing is private they're being so reckless and stupid it's just terrible writing
Yes they are in a contract marriage but they agreed to act like they are totally in love in public.1. A bunch…
you hit everything i wanted so say myself watching this last ep, i thought i was going crazy 😭 ah jung and ji han are both being so stupid and ji han is incredibly selfish
I do like this well enough, but I thought it was going to be a lot gayer so I might have to drop it lmao. It's annoying me how Do Han isn't being developed as much as Ji Han, he just feels like a side character.
Ji Han claims to love Do han and to want the best for him, but is actively trying to steal his fiance? And Ah jung is just letting him try when a core part of the marriage contract is selling that she and do han are in love? If the main three were in on it together or if Ji han knew do han was gay i would understand, but as it is currently he's just trying to start an affair. Not to mention how they're all public figures due to their status in society and literally anyone can see Ji han flying his very public brother's fiance out to Busan for dates. It just makes no sense. Ji han is weird and manipulative and selfish.
The first two episodes were far more comedic in tone which worked really well but now they want to lean seriously into the romance without clearing up many of these issues and I feel like it just makes the romance fall flat. I might wait till it finishes airing to see if it works some of these kinks out bc i was annoyed for almost all of episode 4 when i found 1-3 really fun and fresh
