As with most web novel adaptations where the ML is not exactly a total green flag, they had to whitewash him a bit to make the romance more palatable on screen.
Personally, I actually love the changes they’ve made to his character. Taotao deserves all the love and attention that novel LN never really gave her. There’s that part in the novel where she says she wants someone who speaks kindly to her because “words are the sharpest knives that cut deep,” and I’m honestly glad drama LN hasn’t been as much of a douchebag or as harsh toward her so far (at least not up to episode 10).
BUT, I do think this also makes the reason behind their 6-year on-and-off situation much less clear compared to the novel. I’ve already seen people saying that Taotao is the reason why their situation lasted for 6 years, because the drama makes it seem like he actually wants a real relationship with her and she’s the one refusing.
In the novel, I felt like the dynamic was much more complicated, and his douchy behaviour played a much bigger role in why they kept going in circles for so long. So while I’m happy they made LN more likeable, I think it also changes how viewers are going to interpret their entire relationship.

in the drama, he's too much of a...puppy?! I think the actor is fine, but tone down the puppiness. I always pictured him a bit more reserved. Perhaps he's portraying him like this now so we can see the changes as the story progresses 😭
