That extra should've been episode 35. It's not the typical vague special episode that creators often throw out to appease fans. It ties to the story and is important.
It changes the ending from predictable into different and meaningful, because it shows they didn't just follow what they were told to. And the sacrifices managed to leave a big impression that won't be easily overwritten.
