Oh yes, in retrospect that should've been the biggest giveaway. I like how the show has provided a good base on the eventual reveal of him faking it. They provided him sending the letter earlier in the episode, which we didn't really take much notice of at the time. Then in Ep 6, they show us that he's been faking a bunch of things in front of the rest of Manyang residents. Like they showed us the same unstable penmanship (same penmanship from the petition he sent earlier) in the calendar right until the day before of Minjung's disappearance. Then after Minjung's disappearance, his penmanship suddenly became like a proper penmanship with control to it. Lots of amazing attention to detail in this show.

I think most people would rate the drama only after it finishes. I never rate a drama unless I finish it or drop…
Fair enough, I also do the same thing. Was just caught a bit off-guard given that the comments are mostly positive and yet rating keeps dropping drastically.

There was a window to where Joowon was eavesdropping on Jihoon and Dongshik.

As for the other scene, I'd personally put give that the suspension of disbelief, although it's not far-fetched to consider he could lipread too, especially since he could see Dongshik from his side.

People are speculating about rating drop, but I can assume it might be that it has something with autistic character…
He's been faking it. The loss of stutter and the 180 deg change in his manner of speech showed the whole thing is just an act. On his own, he doesn't stutter at all and he doesn't have his usual childlike, innocent tone, instead he speaks like a completely normal adult. Even his childlike handwriting from the letter he sent to free Dongshik is completely different from the way he writes on the calendar. It's very precise and he has so much control, so unlike the earlier letter where it seemed like the writer doesn't have great control in his handwriting.

Normally in MDL, when ratings would dip this low, there'd already be lots of comments talking about what's wrong with the show way before it reaches 8.1. At most, the comments section would be equally divisive. But here, the comments are like 95-97% positive? And the rating is already down to 8.1? I mean, I've always known MDL ratings to be mostly BS, but this is just ridiculous.

Lee Dongshik and Han Joowon.
So far LDS is the one with more backstory shown but the story is also mostly shown through HJW's POV since he is an outsider.

I think it will eventually come. But yeah been waiting for it for weeks now. I'm sooo curious about his past.

Ahh same!!! Like how can such brief and very rare interactions affect me this way. I want more of them so please writer, keep both of them safe.

That is what I find amazing about the way this show is written. There is an obvious bias because Lee Dongshik was already a former suspect. Meanwhile Kang Jinmook is this bumbling, innocent-looking, and seems to be well-meaning resident of Manyang so they wouldn't really be that suspicious of him.

At the beginning of Ep 6, we got to see how he is playing the police department by appealing to their sympathy by sending them the kimchi he made and acting like a very apologetic father who is tied between feeling sorry to the police and worried for his own daughter. He is totally playing his act so well.

As viewers we also see how their tight relationship in Manyang is really tainting the whole investigation process.

But I do think they are aware of the missing phone. I mean the VCU.

LDS and HJW are not privy to the details of the case cos they are not involved in the investigation of the case. The VCU of Munju Police is the one in charge of the case. And you can see the VCU doing their own investigation at the beginning of Ep 3.

Whatever info the VCU had from their investigations are private and not known to our leads at all. Hence there is even a scene of HJW asking KH for a favor to give him VCU's case file of KMJ case.

The whole testimony recording that HJW did was because KJM just asked him to start an investigation on his own. So of course he has to start from scratch, however this investigation is also not an official one. That is why there was a convo between LDS and HJW where LDS is telling him off for accepting KJM's request.

Didn't they? It was literally the opening of Ep 3. The ones in charge of the case is the VCU which is no longer shown to us as it is not in the POV of the leads anymore. LDS and HJW are not part of the investigation so they are not really privy to the details of whatever the VCU got. Hence there is even a scene of HJW having to ask KH for KMJ case files.

My heart once again broke with how Joowon said he would ignore it if it was him in Jaeyi's shoes and that he himself never looked. That was a really short line but it spoke volumes.

The way HJW talks to her in this scene is so much more gentle than his usually guarded manner of speech. I feel like after learning that YJY's mom disappeared (most likely just like his own mother did), he's become more able to empathize with her.

Joowon's backstory is coming to theaters near you real soon.

Very well said! It's the complex study of the individual characters in the drama with a serial murder case on the background. The reveal they have shown in Ep 6 has always been popularly discussed because of how obvious it is, and yet it's how everyone's connected to the case and what the characters motivations are for doing what they're doing that will play with your mind.

This show just continues to be brilliant week after week. Every single character is so compelling with various motivations that drive them to do what they do. Even Kang Minjung who only appeared very briefly this ep showed layers in her relationship with her dad.

The viewers are consistently kept on their toes because there's so much more to analyze behind what's shown to us.
