The actor or the character?
This was my first time watching Liu Yuning, and what struck me was how his appeal goes beyond the usual "pretty boy" standard. His charisma feels authentic, and his talent, both in acting and singing shows real depth. There’s a rugged charm in his confidence, stature, and distinctive features, complemented by his voice. It’s the kind of manly presence that grows on you, a slow-burn attraction.

Yes, serious drama and I love those parts you mentioned as well. I'm happy it's not love at first sight between FL and ML. The whole “love at first sight” trope with endless blank staring contests? Would be creepy in real life. lol Watching it makes me 🙄 Why do so many K-dramas and C-dramas lean so heavily on the leads blankly gazing at each other like that’s enough to build chemistry?

I like all endings, HE/SE/OE, as long as it's a well-crafted story that transcends the type of ending it delivers. To me, it’s the emotional impact and resonance that matter. SE/OE stays with me longer, forcing me to reflect on loss and meaning, making the experience unforgettable. A SE will provide the closure, I guess. The more emotional depth and turmoil, the more it keeps me hooked.

Well written review. I enjoyed seeing Duanwu and YZJ together. I loved that he watched her while giving her enough…
Thank you. I agree with you. What stands out about their relationship is how deeply they understand each other, without falling into the typical trope where one person loses themselves or changes to fit the other. It's a rare dynamic that's grounded in mutual respect. The chemistry between them was off the charts. I didn't think anything could top the connection in Hidden Love, but this surpassed it in ways I didn't expect.

Wow you're a great writer. This review is beautifully written! And I agree with most of it. My only hang up is…
Thank you! Oh Duan Wu knows something else is going on and she knows more than she lets on. That revelation is rewarding to see unfold. It’s fascinating how Su Mu Zhe emerges as a mature, patient parallel to Duan Wu, yet her bold and gutsy spirit remains intact - true to the character we admired from the start. The way the narrative ties back to themes from the first part is done well, offering a sense of cohesion and growth. For me, the episodes after 25 reignite the story in terms of shifting focus from business back to revenge, fighting for survival, and to the profound connection between Duan Wu and Yan Zi Jing. Their mutual understanding is unforgettable, making the journey well worth completing.

Title The Story of Pearl Girl Spoiler
I agree. This drama is worth watching. I felt so connected watching The episodes ended so fast whenever I watched.…
I wanted CSJ to either go insane during her emotional breakdown and burn the pavilion down or die after she got her revenge on Papa Zheng... but the girl has a lucky rabbit's foot tattooed on her as*... I enjoyed watching ZZH more than CSJ, even though I wanted to slap him silly.

I've seen people asking if TSOPG is worth watching and the answer is YES! Even though this drama is binge worthy…
It was absolutely worth watching. Deeply flawed characters that felt real - some stayed trapped in their flaws, facing the fallout, while others showed incredible courage and growth to break free, and then there are some that was just lucky (CSJ = 🙄) . The story leaves you to interpret outcomes as rewards, punishments, or something in between. It's a poignant reflection on human failure and resilience, offering profound insights into how we confront or succumb to life's challenges.

Review Hidden Love
I craved dessert right after reading your first sentence. Perfect analogy. Hidden Love was unique. It was sweetness…
I didn’t expect to fall for this drama the way I did. I thought I’d moved past the magic of first-love stories especially since my tastes have shifted toward darker, more complex narratives over the years. But Hidden Love reminded me that when a story is told with sincerity, when the acting feels like an open heart, the chemistry ignites like a spark you can’t look away from, the entire OST wraps itself around your emotions, and the direction and script come together seamlessly - you're absolutely right, it's unique.

Not as sparky as DW and YZJ though? lol I feel the same, I think I'll be comparing every future morally grey ml to YZJ.

I knew you liked the UFO lol. Very detailed review of the plot and thoughtful. I agree that the connection between Duan Wu and Yan Zi Jing is one of the most compelling aspects of this drama. Their dynamic evolves through several layers: from master and servant, to mentor and student, to friends and eventually lovers. This progression feels both authentic and reflective of the historical setting in which their relationship unfolds.

While some might perceive elements of their bond as toxic, this interpretation is inherently subjective and hinges on one’s perspective of the context. Surface-level toxicity can sometimes emerge in relationships shaped by harsh societal conditions, yet such bonds can also drive personal growth and mutual protection. These relationships, though flawed, may serve as a crucible for individual resilience and transformation. In contrast, truly toxic relationships are defined by their destructive nature - eroding a person’s physical well-being and shattering their heart and spirit.

In the case of Duan Wu and Yan Zi Jing, their early interactions were undeniably harsh, with frequent clashes born from their circumstances. However, their relationship was far from destructive. Instead, it became a cornerstone of growth for both characters. For Duan Wu, Yan Zi Jing’s presence catalyzed her professional and personal achievements, allowing her to navigate the challenges of her era with strength and skill. For Yan Zi Jing, Duan Wu represented hope and the anchor that preserved his humanity, pulling him back from the brink of despair.

Regarding the ring, its symbolism plays a crucial role in interpreting their story. In my view, Yan Zi Jing likely would not have given the ring to Duan Wu if he had chosen to leave, as it would no longer represent love but a painful reminder of his abandonment. Even if he had given it to her, it’s doubtful Duan Wu would have worn it, as it would signify his desertion after their intimate time together - an act akin to betrayal.

Lastly, the decision to transfer guild leadership to CSJ immediately aligns with the couple's limited time together. This choice underscores their prioritization of each other over professional obligations, emphasizing that their focus was on cherishing the moments they had left rather than being consumed by leadership responsibilities. By entrusting the shops to Yunxiu and Ying Tao earlier on, Duan Wu ensured that their shared legacy would endure, allowing her and Yan Zi Jing to embrace the freedom they so deeply desired. This strategic handoff reflects her practical foresight and her understanding of what truly mattered in their remaining time.

Very thoughtful review! It raises an important point: a female-centered drama doesn’t have to shy away from themes of romance or love. In fact, these elements are often integral to portraying the emotional depth and complexity of female leads. Women, like anyone, are multifaceted - guided by emotions, intellect, and a mix of personal aspirations.

I'm hoping the trend of female-centered roles continue to evolve in C-drama. It’s important to challenge the notion that these roles should focus solely on professional success or depict a "perfect" lead.

For me, what sets TSOPG apart is its balance. It interweaves romance, love, family, and professional success while remaining grounded in the harsh realities of life. It reminds us that life is a mosaic of triumphs and struggles, and this authenticity keeps the story alive in our hearts long after the final scene has faded. Such narratives highlight that true strength lies in embracing all aspects of life - not just perfection, but perseverance, vulnerability, connection, and mortality.

As for the possibility of a second season or a definitive happy-ending special episode, I’m ambivalent. While it might provide a happy closure, I wonder if it could fully recapture the depth and nuance of the original. I guess at this point of my journey, I'm jaded. To me, life itself rarely offers neatly wrapped endings; it often gives us not what we want, but what we need. The emotional impact of a story like this is deeply subjective, and for me, its open-endedness mirrors the unpredictability and impartiality of life.
