I need an objective opinion on this drama from someone who isn’t necessarily a fan of the main leads—and watching…
Here’s my genuine opinion so far, based on my taste and up to episode 6. It might change as the story unfolds, but I hope this review gives you a good idea!
FL: She's fierce and street-smart, but also innocent when it comes to life beyond the pearl farm. Hardworking and fearless, she doesn’t hesitate to throw a punch even without knowing martial arts. Her character is genuine and good-hearted but realistically flawed, making her vulnerable to outside influences. A solid base for powerful character development.
ML: He’s complex, carrying a painful past that pushed him into morally grey areas, yet he clings to enough humanity to avoid fully turning evil. Sharp in business and ruthless when he needs to be. He thinks the FL is too gullible and stubborn, yet he is intrigued by her and can't help but see her. Totally tsundere.
2nd ML: A well-rounded "good guy" with a touch of a hero complex. He's kind, intelligent, optimistic, and aware of his own limits. He tends to see the beauty in the world and can be blind to the darkness, unless the FL tells him.
Antagonists/Villains: They’re the type you love to hate—dark, despicable, layered and compelling.
Plot: Fast-paced with dark, realistic, and relatable themes. The storyline is dynamic, intriguing, and consistently gripping. Contains intense scenes and powerful imagery related to themes of slavery, which might be unsettling for those not accustomed to darker storytelling.
Chemistry: Strong connections between the FL and both the ML and 2nd ML, along with engaging interactions with supporting characters.
Cinematography and Scenery: Beautifully done, enhancing the story’s atmosphere.
Fight Scenes: Well-executed and believable, especially when the FL fights back with raw determination.
So our FL will be somehow younger sister of our ML.(there will be some twist about no blood related later). They…
I don’t think the FL’s the younger sister. It feels more likely that she’s from the same clan, but not actually related. In episode 5, when Yan Zi Jing was a kid, he told his parents that his little sister would be old enough to join them on their travels later that October. But at that time, the FL hadn’t even been born yet when the ML’s parents were killed.
I believe the writers did a great job of establishing the romantic chemistry between the FL and the 2nd ML early in the story. Tons of 2nd ML syndrome popping up in Youtube. Meanwhile, the FL and the 1st ML initially have a more complicated relationship, filled with tension and conflict that eventually, I hope, will evolve into something deep and romantic. Hopefully, this shift will reflect the story’s main themes beautifully. I find the chemistry between the FL and the 1st ML to be more profound and relatable because it’s dynamic; their bond faces challenges but grows stronger through them.
The violent and harsh imagery often tied to themes of slavery can be difficult to watch. Thankfully, the FL manages to escape the pearl farm by the end of episode 2. I'm really hoping that means we’re moving away from references to anything as distressing as the "r" word.
i don't think the ratings on this platform has any kind of effect on any chinese celebrities than why ppl deliberately…
As an international newbie to the world of C-dramas and K-dramas, before binging on a show starring leads I’ve never seen or committing to yet another streaming subscription, I go on a deep dive through ratings and reviews. I've read about more reliable network ratings but I have no access to those stats.
About episodes 1 to 4: (pieces on a board that fit together perfectly). This is a worthy pirate story. These 4 episodes…
I'd be all in for that. They are both strong characters. I think part of the reason she hates Duan Wu at first sight is she identifies a part of herself in Duan Wu. I mean, she dresses like a dude just to grab some power. Another fierce woman carving her spot in the guys' playground. When she finds out she's an actual Yan and the Cui are the reason for her entire clan's massacre... beautiful chaos.
There's no need getting help from Ai for your review. We would appreciate if you write your heart felt review…
🙄Nope, not the delightful rabbit hole of judgmental folks. Appreciate the backhanded compliment about my stellar grammar, though. For whatever it's worth... good luck to you.
Well, and don’t forget nearly drowning her to build her character strength and whipping her in the next trailer…
No worries, this is an interesting discussion. Heavy handed teaching during those times, for both women and men? Seem realistic, imo. Like Yulilyn mentioned above, tough times. I'll reserve making any judgement on the whipping scene until I've watched the complete scene since based on what I've seen, the ML doles out punishments only when merited. He's not some psycho who loves to inflict pain. Even the FL and Shrimp saw how the servants are treated fairly. The arrow clip, looks like he shot it to divert the other arrow, but again, will make my own opinion once I've seen the complete context.
Oh my god, the little things the mother did for her daughter. The "Leave with me" scene with Duan Wu and her biological…
I bawled during that scene. The way the mother screamed while pushing the boat off the shore to save her daughter. The actress who played the mother was good.
Well, and don’t forget nearly drowning her to build her character strength and whipping her in the next trailer…
It builds character? 😆Seriously though, based on what's been revealed about our brooding ML’s backstory, he was probably raised and trained the same way, in a boot camp for ruthless tycoons. I mean, the FL is diving headfirst into his world of cutthroat deals, greed, revenge, and power plays, she's gonna need to become even tougher and possibly a little bit ruthless to not just survive, but actually succeed.
Uhm, the logic in this drama requires you to shut your brain… dropping some blood into the ocean = calling the…
To each their own, I guess. But honestly, your comment about the shark showing up in a second baffles me, especially since it’s been made clear that the diving area is a well-known shark hangout. And your critique about it magically swimming 50 meters towards the bad guy's targets through telepathy? C’mon... we’ve got a bleeding diver in a shark-infested area—what did you expect, a leisurely swim? And 50 meters... debatable.
Maybe you were hoping for a different order of events? If you want to throw around logic, I’d be open to a reasonable debate on why there’s only one shark crashing the party or why not a single one is circling that enormous ship full of yummy people, but let’s be real: who’s to say the famous shark is even the same one in every scene? 😂 So if you’re going to nitpick, at least bring some realism and logic to the table.
YZJ is really a red flag😂 I thought he'd be grayish, but no lol. It's quite the enemies to lovers/boss to lovers/haters…
He's like a pirate whose heart is stashed under layers of cold, unforgiving gold labeled Revenge Central. But hey, he’s not all bad—every now and then, he lets his heart peek out for air. Case in point: he didn’t drag the poor FL through the waves beside his ship for an entire day and night just for sneaking on board. Baby steps, right? Could be a romantic gesture in pirate code. 🤣Honestly, though, I’m dying to know what kind of backstory turned him into the business shark of the high seas.
I like the dynamics of FL and ML. They just seem very logical, like in typical dramas, you'd probably get a ML…
Oh, I totally get where you’re coming from. This ML isn’t your typical knight in shining armor, swooping in to rescue the FL. Nope! These two are more like rocket fuel for each other’s character development. They push, they pull, they make each other better—and yes, they’ll shake up anyone’s cookie-cutter idea of what an unforgettable ML should be. Honestly? In a drama that kicks off with more shadows than sunshine (definitely not a fairytale), an ML with flaws and realness is way more relatable than some swoony, perfect Prince Charming. Like, keep the glass slippers, I want grit.
