You should give it another chance. This is a very well told story compared to anything else in C-drama land. Its also slice of life and about various women's fates in ancient household. So don't expect romance to be the main focus or you will be disappointed. Or lots of action scenes. I don't think the scenes are all over the place - they tie together and focus on different characters so we actually learn about all the people in the drama - it's not just about the FL and ML.

Well deserved. A gem of a drama and a treat for us C-drama fans. Have been starved of some good C-dramas lately. I know Pursuit of Jade is also up there but I have tried to start it 3 times and have not been able to continue past the first few episodes. Not sure why. Maybe there is too much camera focusing on how gorgeous the ML is. He is amazingly good looking from any angle (and they do film him from every angle LOL) but it's kinda distracting to me and I find him a tad (sorry) delicate for a general. So it immediately takes me out of story. He would have been great as a scholar or detective with his refined features. Maybe I will give it another try.

That is so funny! I hadn't connected the dots - they did exactly the same thing to each other so clever of the director. There are so. many nuances to this drama I know I missed on first watch, def have to rewatch again.

Me too - ATC withdrawal pangs today. Trying to look for something else to watch but nothing's sticking. Some good K-dramas coming but all in October.

I suspect it's going to be bittersweet rather than tragic. . Seven Tan has already mentioned a few times in interviews that she got to be an 80 year old and I suspect it's probably a retrospective look back at her life. And I will bet it was a life well lived. I hope I too can look back when I am 80 to a life well lived.

Yes, that scene is my all time fav in this drama (of course have not seen the rest but it will stick in my mind for a while even after this drama has ended. So well written and so well played.

It got real when you mentioned the ex-boss. Yeah I work in corporate world as well and as they say the "s&^t flows downhill". CEO lashes out on his reports and then everyone down the chain gets to "enjoy" the aftermath too.

Well her character serves as a contrast to LX who was also quite put upon to say the least but how they each reacted to their circumstances is quite different. But the actress Li Meng slayed it in the role. I loved her acting. So good.

Totally. I am cheering for the cast come awards time. They are doing a fantastic job - and taking us all on a wonderful story journey with them. Much needed respite from all that is going on in the real world.

I just went in and gave them all a 10 as well. I hope this drama breaks all records - for the cast. I adore Seven Tan and Liu Xue Yi (my new favorite C-actor!) but I also hope the other wonderful supporting actors get noticed too. So much great acting. Someone give Li Meng a best supporting actress award (not sure if they do that in Chinese award shows LOL). Director and scrip-writer deserve recognition too!

Why would JQ suspect LX is SJL when he buried the Shen family and no body was missing. As far as he is concerned, the dead girl (the real LX) is SJL. If you put yourself in his shoes, coming from a privileged background where there is so much difference level between the rich and the indentured, why would he think that she would be resilient enough to survive as a servant after being the pampered lady of the house? I think the director will help him (and us) connect the dots when he sees some actual evidence that is incontrovertible and then all the other pieces that probably were rolling around in the back of his mind fall into place. I am actually looking forward to seeing that scene that the teaser, well, teases at.

Well given this is slow burn drama its ok for me to savor the journey and get to spend more time with the characters even if I am anxious to see what's next. Also getting to chat about the drama with fellow MDLers is kinda fun too.

Makes total sense. That would be benefiting from the misfortune of others just like how the Lin family got the Shen compound.
